This guide is for visitors who want to meet geiko in Osaka. Geiko are traditional performers who sing, dance and play music. In Osaka's Nanchi area, you can book a private party with them at Tanigawa, a traditional tea house.
To book, you must reserve ahead and bring your own interpreter who speaks Japanese. An interpreter is a person who helps people talk across languages.
Do you want to wear a costume yourself instead? That is a different activity. We keep it in a separate section below.

Tanigawa: room size and what your quote must cover
Tanigawa lists three private ozashiki rooms and arrangements for 2–20 guests on the English page; the Japanese page instead says one to just over twelve, so confirm your group with Tanigawa. Its English page describes Japanese banquets with food and drinks arranged to match a budget. That does not establish a current fixed-price geiko package.
| Option | Confirmed scope | Price and booking question | Source and checked date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tanigawa banquet | Three private rooms; 2–20 guests on the English page; the Japanese page instead says one to just over twelve, so confirm your group with Tanigawa; food and drinks arranged to budget | Request a written total, including the number of performers, taxes, service charges and cancellation terms | Tanigawa English page, 4 Nov 2026 |
Tell Tanigawa your guest count and budget first. Ask which entertainment, food, drinks and language support are included in the offered plan. Do not treat a starting price below as the current all-in total for your group.

1What happens at an Osaka Nanchi geisha experience?
At Tanigawa, you sit in a traditional room with geiko. They sing, dance and play music. You can also play party games with them.
Food and drinks are arranged to fit your budget. You tell the venue how much you want to spend.
Words you will see in this guide
Each Japanese word is explained once here.
- Geiko: a traditional performer who sings, dances and plays music. We use "geisha" in the title because many visitors search with that word.
- Ozashiki asobi: party games you play with geiko in a traditional room.
- Chaya: a traditional tea house where these parties take place.
- Nanchi: an area of Osaka with its own geisha district culture.
- Hanadai: the geiko fee. Tanigawa lists it per geiko.
- Tanigawa (たに川): the tea house in this guide. Use the Japanese name in map apps if the English one fails.

Tanigawa is a chaya that keeps Nanchi's geisha district culture alive. Its official site says it opened in 1969.
This guide uses only Tanigawa's own pages. Other venues in Nanchi may exist. We did not check them.

The official home page photos show Tanigawa's ozashiki setting.

2Osaka Nanchi geisha experience plans: party, salon or other options
Start with one question. Do you want to meet real geiko? Or do you want something else, like a meal or clothing?
Some plans include geiko. Others do not. This table shows the official options.
| Option | What official sources say | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Party with geiko | Songs, dance, music and room games. | Number of geiko, food, total price |
| Tea-house salon | Lasts about two hours. | Whether geiko attend, dates, price |
| Room without geiko | This is allowed. | Which charges apply |
| Clothing experience | For one woman, with conditions. | The conditions, dates, price |
| Geiko travel to another place | Geiko can travel to another location. | Place, conditions, extra charges |
| Plan built on your budget | Tell your budget and get a suggestion. | How many geiko the budget covers |
All rows checked 2026-11-03.
Our sources do not say whether geiko are at the salon. So ask Tanigawa first if meeting geiko is your goal.

Which option fits you?
This table is our own simple guide. It is not an official rule.
| Your situation | Option to ask about first |
|---|---|
| A couple or group who wants to meet geiko | Party with geiko |
| Less time in Osaka | Tea-house salon (ask if geiko attend) |
| A private meal in a traditional room | Room without geiko |
| One woman who wants to try the clothing | Clothing experience (ask the conditions) |
| An event at another place | Geiko travel to another location |
| A fixed budget | Tell your budget and get a suggestion |
Oiran and maiko studio plans vs meeting geiko
Search results for this topic also show an Osaka studio page. Its title uses the Japanese words oiran and maiko.
We did not check a reliable source for what these words mean in that studio's plans. So we do not define them here. Check the studio's own plan for its activities and photos.
| Party with geiko at Tanigawa | Studio plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Who performs? | Geiko sing, dance and play music | Check the studio's own plan |
| Where? | 2-4-29 Shimanouchi, Chuo Ward | The studio's own address |
| How to book | Contact Tanigawa | The studio's own system |
| Interpreter rule | Bring one | Check the studio's rules |
| Checked by us? | Yes, official pages, 2026-11-03 | No |

If you choose a studio, follow these steps:
- Open the studio's own website. Do not rely only on apps or old blog posts.
- Read the plan page. Check the price, the time and what is included.
- Search the page for "geiko." If you cannot find it, email the studio and ask.
- Open the studio's access page. Copy its address into your phone's map app.
- Book with the studio's own form. It is not part of a Tanigawa booking.
Want a public stage show instead? Use the organizer's official site for dates, place and tickets. We did not check upcoming shows.
3Osaka Nanchi geisha experience cost: prices and a sample bill
A sample for two guests, plus one interpreter whose costs are left out, with one geiko and boxed meals, is ¥64,000. That is before drinks, tax, service and interpreter costs. We added this from Tanigawa's starting prices([1]), checked 2026-11-03). It is not a quote from the venue.
Tanigawa prices each part of the visit separately. All listed prices leave out tax and service.
Official starting prices
| Item | Starting price | Listed for |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | ¥6,000 | One person |
| Shokado bento (a boxed Japanese meal) | ¥8,000 | One person |
| Kaiseki (a Japanese meal with many small courses) | ¥20,000 | One person |
| Hanadai (the geiko fee) | ¥36,000 | One geiko |
| Drinks | Separate charge | Ask for a price |
Source: Tanigawa use and prices, checked 2026-11-03. Prices exclude tax and service.

These are starting prices, not a full bill. Your real price may be higher.
Prices are in Japanese yen. If you pay in another currency, check the exchange rate on the day you pay.
Sample bill (our calculation)
Trip conditions: two guests, one interpreter (costs not included), one geiko, boxed meals. Prices from([1]), checked 2026-11-03.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | 2 × ¥6,000 | ¥12,000 |
| Boxed meal | 2 × ¥8,000 | ¥16,000 |
| One geiko | From ¥36,000 | ¥36,000 |
| Sample before extras | ¥64,000 |

Your total-cost worksheet
The sample is not a full trip total. Fill in this worksheet with real answers.
| Cost | Who to ask | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Seating, meals, geiko | Tanigawa quote | ______ |
| Drinks | Tanigawa | Ask |
| Tax and service | Tanigawa | Ask |
| Interpreter's seat and meal | Tanigawa | Ask |
| Interpreter's own fee | Your interpreter | Ask |
| Transport to and from the venue | Your own route | Check |
| Tip (optional) | Your choice | ______ |
| Total | ______ |
Starting prices from([1]), checked 2026-11-03.
What changes the price most?
The geiko fee is the biggest single starting price. Tanigawa suggests at least two geiko for a traditional party. Ask how a second geiko changes the quote.
The meal also matters. Kaiseki starts at more than double the boxed meal.([1]), checked 2026-11-03)
| Meal per person | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Shokado bento | ¥8,000 |
| Kaiseki | ¥20,000 |
Meals are catered or delivered. This means they are made elsewhere and brought in. Ask which meals are possible on your date.
The official price example uses a three-hour stay. That does not mean every visit lasts three hours. Check the length of your own plan.
Paying by card and tips
Tanigawa accepts credit cards.([1]), checked 2026-11-03)
| Card | Accepted |
|---|---|
| Visa | Yes |
| Mastercard | Yes |
| American Express | Yes |
| JCB | Yes |
| Diners Club | Yes |
A tip (an extra gift of money) is optional.
Ask when payment is due. Your interpreter may want payment separately, so ask them too. For money tips on your trip, see Japan cash or card?

4How to book an Osaka Nanchi geisha experience
Book by contacting Tanigawa directly, and arrange your own interpreter. Start with Tanigawa's official English page. It says visits are by reservation only.([2]), checked 2026-11-03)

The interpreter rule in plain words
The English page has one clear rule. You find the interpreter yourself. At least one must come with you.
Our sources do not say how to find one. They also do not say when Tanigawa needs the interpreter's name. Ask in your first message.

You can copy and change this short message:

Dates, opening hours and reviews
Ask Tanigawa whether your date and chosen party or salon plan are available. Its sources consulted here do not establish opening hours, closed days, a booking deadline or salon dates.
Reviews not checked. We did not read any reviews for this guide. So we show no star ratings or quotes. If you want reviews, read them on the site you book through.

Use Tanigawa's official access map for the route from the station.
A fill-in schedule for the day
Use the start time in your confirmation email. Do not guess it.

6Before your Osaka Nanchi geisha experience: dress, photos and manners
Wear socks and neat clothes. Tanigawa does not allow bare feet.
Its FAQ says clothes up to smart casual are preferred. Smart casual means a neat, tidy style of clothes. If you are unsure, ask Tanigawa.
Women guests are welcome.

Photos, seating and food needs
Our sources do not give photo rules. Ask Tanigawa where and when you can take photos. Always ask before you photograph a geiko.
Tell Tanigawa about any food limits when you ask for a quote. Ask if the meal can match your needs.

7FAQ: Osaka Nanchi geisha experience
These answers use Tanigawa's official pages, checked 2026-11-03. Confirm current conditions with the venue.
Do I need an interpreter for a geisha experience at Tanigawa?
Yes. Tanigawa asks you to arrange and bring at least one Japanese-speaking interpreter. Ask when it needs their details.
Can one person book a geisha experience at Tanigawa?
The Japanese use guide accepts groups from one person. The English page says two to 20 people. Ask Tanigawa which rule applies to you.
Will geiko be at the Tanigawa tea-house salon?
The official FAQ says the salon lasts about two hours. Our sources do not say whether geiko attend. Ask Tanigawa before you book it.
Is an oiran or maiko studio plan the same as a geisha experience in Osaka Nanchi?
No. A studio plan is a separate booking at a separate place. We did not check any studio. Check the studio's own plan for its activities and photos. To meet geiko, contact Tanigawa.
What happens if I cancel my Tanigawa reservation?
From 6 p.m., three days before your booking, you pay a 100% cancellation charge([1]), checked 2026-11-03). Ask Tanigawa what amount the 100% is based on.
