The best ski resort in Japan depends on the trip you want. For a Tokyo day trip, GALA Yuzawa’s station connection is hard to beat. For several days exploring different mountains, Niseko United and Hakuba Valley offer passes covering multiple ski areas. Nozawa Onsen combines skiing at one resort with a hot-spring village.

Start with your travel dates and the number of days you want to ski. Then compare the journey, the areas covered by each pass and whether a multi-day ticket allows for rest days.

Which ski resort should you choose?

At a glance
Niseko United All Mountain
¥12,600 for one day in the regular period; ¥13,500 in the peak period
Hakuba Valley All-Mountain Day Pass
¥11,100 for one day; ¥32,200 for three days
Nozawa Onsen
¥7,800 for one day during the regular-price period
GALA Yuzawa

Compare 2026–27 lift-ticket prices

Resort or pass Published adult price What to consider
Niseko United All Mountain ¥12,600 for one day in the regular period; ¥13,500 in the peak period Covers four areas; multi-day tickets are consecutive
Hakuba Valley All-Mountain Day Pass ¥11,100 for one day; ¥32,200 for three days Covers ten areas; the three-day pass is valid within six days of first use
Nozawa Onsen ¥7,800 for one day during the regular-price period Single-resort ticket; four-hour and night tickets have separate terms
GALA Yuzawa ¥8,000 for a gondola-and-lift ticket; ¥7,500 at the web price The four-hour ticket is a different product

These are different products, so the lowest price is not necessarily the best value for your itinerary. The prices and plans in this guide were checked against the operators’ published information on November 8, 2026.

Niseko United: four areas on one pass

The All Mountain pass covers Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and HANAZONO. It is worth considering if you plan to ski across the group rather than stay in one area.

For 2026–27, the adult one-day pass costs ¥13,500 during the peak period, December 24, 2026–February 28, 2027. It costs ¥12,600 during the regular periods, December 12–23, 2026 and March 1–22, 2027. Early, spring and final-season rates differ.

Multi-day tickets run on consecutive days. If you plan a rest day in the middle of your stay, include it when deciding how many days of coverage to buy.

Getting to Niseko

New Chitose Airport is a gateway for Niseko. The direct winter ski bus takes approximately three to three and a half hours and requires advance booking. Choose a stop that suits your accommodation and allow time after landing to collect luggage.

Train connections via Otaru are another option, followed by a bus or taxi from Kutchan or Niseko Station. Niseko United’s access guide includes bus and train information; its displayed ski-bus timetable is for the previous season, so check the operator’s 2026–27 schedule before booking.

Hakuba Valley: flexibility across ten resorts

The Hakuba Valley pass covers ten ski areas across Omachi, Hakuba and Otari. You can use it at multiple participating resorts on the same day, making it useful if you want to explore rather than commit to one mountain.

The adult one-day pass costs ¥11,100, and the child pass costs ¥6,400. Hakuba defines its child category as ages 6–12. The adult three-day pass costs ¥32,200 and can be used within six days from first use, giving you room for rest days.

The pass includes the Hakuba Valley shuttle on ski or snowboard days, but excludes night skiing and the night shuttle. Riding the shuttle alone counts as a full day of the pass. If you buy a new pass online, redeem it before using the shuttle; for a reloaded card, pass through a lift gate first.

Getting to Hakuba

Hakuba Valley lists a route from Tokyo by Hokuriku Shinkansen and express bus, taking as little as two hours and 50 minutes. Check the bus stop and local connection for your accommodation or chosen resort in the official access information.

Nozawa Onsen: skiing and a hot-spring village

Nozawa Onsen is a good fit if you prefer to base your trip around one resort. Its adult one-day price changes across the season:

Price period Dates Adult one-day ticket
Early season November 28–December 18, 2026 ¥5,600
Regular season December 19, 2026–March 28, 2027 ¥7,800
Spring season March 29–May 5, 2027 ¥6,100

The regular-period child one-day ticket is ¥4,700. Nozawa describes its child category as junior-high-school age and below; its English price table also labels the category “under 15.” For a preschool child accompanied by a paying adult, the resort has a separate free-entry condition. See the special-rate periods and the ticket terms when choosing a fare.

During the regular period, an adult four-hour ticket costs ¥6,700. The four hours begin at first gate passage, and the ticket is valid only on the day of purchase. For an arrival-day session, compare your expected gate time with the remaining lift hours.

An adult night ticket costs ¥2,850 and is valid from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the purchase day. Ordinary day and hour tickets do not include night skiing. The resort plans to begin night skiing on December 26, 2026; check the night-ski schedule for your visit.

Getting to Nozawa Onsen

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama Station, then the Nozawa Onsen Liner from bus stop 4. The direct bus takes approximately 25 minutes. Buy the bus ticket from the machine next to the stop and check connections in the resort’s train and bus guide.

GALA Yuzawa: a convenient trip from Tokyo

GALA Yuzawa is directly connected to GALA Yuzawa Station, making it a practical choice for a Shinkansen day trip. From Echigo-Yuzawa Station, the resort also lists a shuttle journey of approximately 10 minutes. Check train and shuttle schedules for your travel date.

For 2026–27, GALA lists these adult prices:

Ticket Standard price Web price
Gondola and lift ¥8,000 ¥7,500
Four-hour pass ¥7,500 ¥7,000

The ¥7,500 standard four-hour ticket and ¥7,500 web gondola-and-lift ticket are different products. Select by ticket name, not price alone. GALA’s gondola-and-lift fare for elementary-school students is ¥4,000 standard or ¥3,500 online.

GALA plans sightseeing-only operation from December 12–18, 2026; skiing and snowboarding are unavailable during those dates. Its planned ski season runs from December 19, 2026 to May 5, 2027.

The resort’s South Area will be closed for the 2026–27 winter season. The connecting ropeway to Yuzawa Kogen is among the affected facilities; GALA says travel to Yuzawa Kogen will be by shuttle bus. See its South Area notice when planning terrain or connections.

For visitors booking ahead, GALA announced a ¥4,800 early-bird lift ticket on sale online from October 15 through 11:00 p.m. on November 30, 2026. Check the early-bird offer and its purchase conditions before choosing between it and the regular web ticket.

Compare planned season dates

Opening and closing plans help narrow your options, particularly for an early or spring trip. The dates below run from 2026 into 2027.

Ski area Planned operating period
Niseko Annupuri and Grand Hirafu November 28–May 5
Niseko Village November 28–April 4
Niseko HANAZONO November 28–April 11
GALA Yuzawa ski operation December 19–May 5
Furano November 28–May 5
Naeba December 18–April 4
Kagura November 28–May 16
Kagura’s Tashiro area December 19–May 5
Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort October 31–March 31
Shizukuishi December 19–March 22
Myoko Suginohara December 19–March 28
Yakebitaiyama December 4–May 5

Nozawa’s published winter ticket-price period runs from November 28, 2026 to May 5, 2027, with the three price periods shown above. Niseko Village and HANAZONO have earlier planned closing dates than Annupuri and Grand Hirafu. Prince Snow Resorts also lists separate dates for Kagura’s Tashiro area. Check the specific area and lift status before setting out; plans can change with snow and operating conditions.

Compare the cost for your group

The following comparison uses two adults and one 10-year-old elementary-school student who meets GALA’s elementary-school category. That child also falls within Hakuba’s ages 6–12 category and Nozawa’s published child category.

For a regular-priced day such as January 10, 2027, the listed ticket prices add up as follows:

Pass Calculation Ticket total
Hakuba Valley one-day passes ¥11,100 × 2 + ¥6,400 ¥28,600
Nozawa Onsen regular-period one-day tickets ¥7,800 × 2 + ¥4,700 ¥20,300
GALA Yuzawa web gondola-and-lift tickets ¥7,500 × 2 + ¥3,500 ¥18,500

Hakuba’s total buys access to multiple participating resorts; the Nozawa and GALA figures are for their respective resorts. The totals cover the listed tickets only, so add transport, accommodation, rentals, lessons and meals when comparing the full trip.

Check offers for your actual dates. For example, Nozawa lists free child one-day lift tickets on December 20, 2026, January 17, February 21 and March 21, 2027. Eligible children must obtain a ticket at the ticket center; the resort lists a ¥500 cash deposit when a child ticket is issued on its own.

What to book and check before travelling

  1. Set your ski and rest days. Hakuba’s three-day pass allows a six-day use window; Niseko United’s multi-day passes are consecutive.
  2. Choose accommodation around your connections. Match the property to the airport bus stop, railway station or resort shuttle you intend to use.
  3. Book transfers and equipment for your dates. Allow time after landing to collect luggage before a reserved airport bus.
  4. Buy the right lift product. Check the resort, child category, validity window and whether the online price applies. At Hakuba, allow time to redeem a new online pass before boarding the shuttle.
  5. Check lift and area status before setting out. This matters especially for spring trips, night skiing and plans involving more than one area.

Questions before booking

Which resort is best for a Tokyo day trip?

GALA Yuzawa is a strong choice for a rail-based day trip because the resort is directly connected to GALA Yuzawa Station. Compare train times with the resort’s ski operating dates before booking.

Can I use Hakuba Valley’s three-day pass across a week?

It is valid for six days from first use, rather than a full seven-day week. Plan all three ski days within that window.

Does the Hakuba Valley pass include night skiing?

No. Night skiing and the night shuttle are excluded. The daytime shuttle is included on ski or snowboard days under the pass conditions.

Are Niseko United multi-day tickets consecutive?

Yes. Niseko United states that its multi-day lift tickets are valid for consecutive days.

Can I ski at GALA Yuzawa from December 12–18, 2026?

No. Those dates are scheduled for sightseeing operation only. Ski operation is planned to begin on December 19, 2026.

Are rentals and lessons included in the listed lift-ticket prices?

Budget for them separately unless the particular package you select says they are included. Compare any rental or lesson package with the lift ticket you need.
