A seven-night trip to Japan comes to ¥218,792 per person when calculated from the Japan Tourism Agency’s average spending of ¥31,256 per night for leisure visitors in July–September 2026. The equivalent figures are ¥312,560 for 10 nights, ¥437,584 for 14 nights and ¥656,376 for 21 nights.
Those amounts are useful starting points for planning. To build your own total, replace the averages with your hotel prices, meal plans, transport tickets and shopping budget, then add international flights separately. The agency’s quarterly survey covers spending by visitors during their trips to Japan. (mlit.go.jp)
How much do visitors spend in Japan?
In July–September 2026, leisure visitors spent an average of ¥222,391 per person per trip, with an average stay of 7.1 nights. Accommodation was the largest category, followed by shopping and food.
| Spending category | Average per person per night | Average per person per trip |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | ¥10,708 | ¥76,190 |
| Shopping | ¥8,946 | ¥63,653 |
| Food and drink | ¥7,084 | ¥50,406 |
| Transport | ¥3,236 | ¥23,026 |
| Entertainment and services | ¥1,271 | ¥9,047 |
| Other | ¥10 | ¥70 |
| Published total | ¥31,256 | ¥222,391 |
The figures are for leisure visitors excluding cruise passengers, from the Japan Tourism Agency’s first preliminary release. For comparison, the 2025 final survey recorded average spending of ¥229,000 per general visitor across all travel purposes. (mlit.go.jp)
Shopping makes a substantial difference to the average. If you plan to buy few souvenirs, set your own shopping allowance instead of automatically using the survey figure. Likewise, a trip with several long-distance train journeys may need a different transport allowance.
The survey’s published category figures are rounded separately, so the category rows and published totals can differ slightly. Use the published total for a quick reference and your own itemized prices for booking.
Japan trip cost for 7, 10, 14 and 21 nights
The following table multiplies each nightly leisure average by the number of nights. Amounts are per person.
| Category | 7 nights | 10 nights | 14 nights | 21 nights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | ¥74,956 | ¥107,080 | ¥149,912 | ¥224,868 |
| Shopping | ¥62,622 | ¥89,460 | ¥125,244 | ¥187,866 |
| Food and drink | ¥49,588 | ¥70,840 | ¥99,176 | ¥148,764 |
| Transport | ¥22,652 | ¥32,360 | ¥45,304 | ¥67,956 |
| Entertainment and services | ¥8,897 | ¥12,710 | ¥17,794 | ¥26,691 |
| Other | ¥70 | ¥100 | ¥140 | ¥210 |
| Published nightly total × nights | ¥218,792 | ¥312,560 | ¥437,584 | ¥656,376 |
For a 14-night trip, the accommodation, food, transport and entertainment rows add up to ¥312,186 per person. Add your own shopping allowance, international flights and any other costs you plan to buy.
For two people sharing, start with the hotel’s total room price for both guests and divide it by two. Keep meals, attraction tickets and rail fares per person. This avoids counting a room twice or dividing a per-person ryokan rate a second time.
The longer the stay, the more useful it becomes to replace the straight-line calculation with an itinerary. A 21-night trip with one long-distance move and several nights in the same city may have a very different transport pattern from a trip that changes cities every few days.
Accommodation and food: where your budget changes
Compare rooms using the full stay price
Search each hotel’s official booking page with the same dates and number of guests. Compare the total for the stay, not just the headline nightly rate.
| Stay type | What to include in your comparison |
|---|---|
| Hostel | Price per bed, shared facilities, lockers and check-in hours |
| Capsule hotel | Price per person, luggage storage and available facilities |
| Business hotel | Price per room, number of guests and room size |
| Hotel | Stay total, breakfast, taxes shown at checkout and cancellation terms |
| Ryokan | Price per person or room, plus whether dinner and breakfast are included |
For a shared room, enter the complete booking total in your worksheet before calculating each traveler’s share. If you are considering a ryokan with dinner included, remove that dinner from your separate restaurant budget.
Mix inexpensive meals with meals worth planning around
Japan’s convenience stores, noodle shops, set-meal restaurants and department-store food halls make it easy to vary your food spending. JNTO suggests using the wide range of casual dining options to keep costs manageable; its budget travel guide also recommends looking at posted prices before choosing a restaurant. (japan.travel)
A meal example is ICHIRAN Shibuya: its official menu lists classic tonkotsu ramen at ¥1,180. The shop is a short walk from Shibuya Station and uses a ticket machine. ICHIRAN’s FAQ says it does not take seat reservations; its priority-entry service is offered at selected branches. For a less rushed walk-in meal, consider going outside the usual lunch and dinner peaks. (en.ichiran.com)
The survey food average of ¥7,084 per night can also serve as a starting allowance. If you divide it into three equal meal slots, each slot is roughly ¥2,361. When you book a special dinner, replace one slot with the course price rather than adding the dinner on top of the entire allowance.
At an izakaya, ask about an otoshi appetizer or a seating charge before ordering:
- お通しはありますか? (Otoshi wa arimasu ka?) — Is there an otoshi charge?
- 席料はいくらですか? (Sekiryō wa ikura desu ka?) — How much is the seating charge?
For food allergies, tell staff the specific ingredient before ordering: 「〇〇のアレルギーがあります。これは入っていますか?」 — “I have an allergy to 〇〇. Is it in this dish?” Ask about sauces, broths and shared preparation equipment too; if staff cannot establish that a dish is suitable, choose something else.
Transport: single tickets, airport trains and rail passes
Price local travel, airport transfers and intercity journeys as separate rows. A rechargeable IC card is convenient for many local trains and buses; record the fares you spend as transport and keep any refundable deposit separate.
Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen
The direct Nozomi takes about 2 hours 20 minutes from Tokyo Station to Kyoto Station. Hikari takes about 2 hours 40 minutes, while Kodama takes about 3 hours 40 minutes, according to Kyoto’s tourist information service. No change of trains is needed on these direct services. (global.kyoto.travel)
A Shinkansen journey consists of a basic fare and a limited-express charge. JR Central’s fare guide illustrates a regular-season Nozomi reserved seat from Shinagawa to Kyoto as:
| Component | Adult, one way |
|---|---|
| Basic fare | ¥8,360 |
| Reserved-seat Shinkansen charge | ¥5,810 |
| Total | ¥14,170 |
The operator sells combined tickets as well, so do not add the two components again if your booking already includes both. (global.jr-central.co.jp)
For a slower option, JR Central Tours lists a Tokyo–Kyoto Puratto Kodama ordinary-car reserved-seat plan at ¥10,960 one way for its displayed weekday A-fare example. Book through the official plan page; the displayed fare applies to eligible Monday–Thursday departures outside peak periods. The plan has no departures during the listed 2026 year-end exclusion, December 26 through January 4, 2027. (travel.jr-central.co.jp)
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?
The official Japan Rail Pass site lists adult ordinary-car prices for online purchase as follows:
| Pass validity | Adult price |
|---|---|
| 7 days | ¥50,000 |
| 14 days | ¥80,000 |
| 21 days | ¥100,000 |
The pass covers eligible JR services during its validity period, including Hikari and Kodama on the Tokyo–Kyoto route. Nozomi and Mizuho require an additional pass-holder ticket: the official supplement for Tokyo–Kyoto is ¥4,960 each way. Non-JR subway and private railway journeys need their own fares. (japanrailpass.net)
To compare options, list every journey inside the proposed pass period:
- Add the full single-ticket prices, including limited-express charges.
- Add the pass price, uncovered fares and any Nozomi or Mizuho supplements.
- Choose the lower total that also fits the trains and times you want.
For a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip alone, two of the displayed ¥10,960 Kodama plans total ¥21,920, less than the seven-day pass. Add other planned rail journeys before deciding.
Airport and city travel
For Narita Airport, JR East’s Narita Express page lists an adult ordinary-car fare of ¥3,140 one way to Tokyo. Its N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket costs ¥5,200 for eligible overseas visitors and is valid for a round trip within 14 days. Reserve seats online or at a JR ticket office or suitable ticket machine. (jreast.co.jp)
For city sightseeing, the Tokyo Subway Ticket costs ¥1,000 for 24 hours, ¥1,500 for 48 hours or ¥2,000 for 72 hours for an adult. It covers Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines. Compare it with the fares for the rides you actually plan; JR and other railways are separate. (tokyometro.jp)
Activities and extras to add
Paid attractions can fit into a modest sightseeing day. In Tokyo, Shinjuku Gyoen charges ¥500 per adult. An advance e-ticket can save time at the ticket counter. The garden normally closes on Mondays, or the following weekday if Monday is a public holiday, and from December 29 to January 3; it opens on Mondays during its stated cherry-blossom and chrysanthemum periods. (policies.env.go.jp)
For an example of how individual purchases add up, combine the displayed ¥10,960 Tokyo–Kyoto Kodama fare in each direction, a ¥1,180 bowl at ICHIRAN Shibuya and ¥500 admission to Shinjuku Gyoen. Those four purchases total ¥23,600 per person. Add accommodation, other meals, local transport and the rest of your activities to make a complete trip budget. (travel.jr-central.co.jp)
Give these items their own rows as needed:
- Shopping: set a personal cap rather than adopting the survey average.
- Mobile data: compare your roaming plan with an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi plan.
- Luggage: add lockers or forwarding if you plan to use them.
- Insurance and payment fees: use your insurer’s quote and your bank or card issuer’s terms.
- International flights: enter the airline’s round-trip total per person and avoid adding a departure charge twice if it is already in the fare.
Choose your dates and route
JNTO identifies Golden Week, the Obon summer holiday and New Year as particularly busy domestic travel periods. If dates are flexible, compare the same flights and room types on weekdays outside those periods. For popular trains and hotels during holidays, book ahead. (japan.travel)
A route also determines how much you spend moving between cities:
| Trip length | A practical route to price |
|---|---|
| 7 nights | Base yourself in Tokyo or the Kyoto–Osaka area, with nearby day trips. |
| 10 nights | Split your stay between Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka; price the Shinkansen between them. |
| 14 nights | Add time in both regions and consider a further destination if its transport fits your budget. |
| 21 nights | Use longer stays in each base and price each additional intercity leg separately. |
For Kyoto sightseeing, the city’s Kiyomizu-dera Line offers a ¥500 adult one-ride ticket on its scheduled weekday service through January 29, 2027. It does not operate on weekends, public holidays, December 29–31 or January 4. The guided option costs ¥1,500 per adult, includes temple admission and requires an advance reservation. For popular temples and shrines, a weekday or early-morning visit can also make for a quieter experience. (kyoto.travel)
Build a simple trip-cost worksheet
Create one row for each purchase and use a consistent unit: per room, per person, one way or round trip.
| Worksheet row | How to calculate the per-person amount |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Add room totals for all stays, then divide shared rooms by the number of guests |
| Food and drink | Add your daily meal allowance and replace meal slots with booked courses |
| Local transport | Add estimated individual fares or the relevant city pass |
| Intercity transport | Add single tickets, or the pass plus uncovered fares and supplements |
| Activities | Add each admission or tour price |
| Shopping | Enter your own cap |
| Extras | Add data, insurance, luggage and payment fees |
| International flights | Add the airline’s round-trip fare per person |
For a shared trip, a useful formula is:
Per-person trip total = shared room totals ÷ guests + per-person food + transport + activities + shopping + extras + flights
To compare two departure dates, duplicate the worksheet and enter the same route, room types and number of guests for each option. The difference will show where a date change affects the total.
Japan trip cost FAQ
How much should I budget for seven nights?
The survey-based reference is ¥218,792 per person, calculated from the leisure average of ¥31,256 per night. Replace it with your own room, food, transport and activity figures, and add flights separately.
How much should I budget for two weeks?
The 14-night survey reference is ¥437,584 per person. Of that, ¥125,244 comes from the scaled shopping average, making your personal shopping cap an important adjustment.
What is the biggest expense?
Accommodation was the largest leisure category in the July–September 2026 survey, at ¥10,708 per person per night. A shared room’s actual cost per person depends on the full room price and the number of guests. (mlit.go.jp)
Is the Japan Rail Pass worthwhile for Tokyo and Kyoto?
Compare the pass with the full price of your planned journeys. A Tokyo–Kyoto return by itself may cost less on individual tickets; a longer route with several eligible JR trips can change the calculation.
When is the cheapest time to visit?
Start by comparing weekdays outside Golden Week, Obon and New Year. Use matching room types, flights and trip lengths so the comparison reflects your own itinerary.
