Japan coin lockers are found at train stations and airports, and official websites often show where they are. In the official examples below, a small locker costs 300–500 yen, and you can keep a bag for 3 to 8 days. Each operator has its own rules about payment, when a new "day" starts and how long you can stay, so check the sign on the locker before you close the door.
1What Japan coin lockers are and why they help
A coin locker is a small metal box you rent to hold your bag for a while. Some are near ticket gates, like at Keihan's Yodoyabashi Station (Keihan). You can leave your suitcase in one, explore the city, and collect it later.
Today many lockers do not use coins at all. Some use an IC card, which is a rechargeable train card like Suica. Others take credit cards or QR payment. The name "coin locker" just stayed.

Another traveler shows why lockers are a cheap way to store your bags while you sightsee in Tokyo.
2How to find a free locker
Start with the official website of the station or airport. The Keihan railway site lists lockers station by station. It shows where they are, how many there are of each size, and if they take IC cards. It also links to maps of each station (Keihan).
Details matter even inside one station. At Keihan's Tenmabashi Station, the lockers outside the west gate do not take IC cards. The lockers in front of the Info Station do (Keihan).
At airports, Narita's website links to a locker map ⓘ Narita Airport. Haneda's website has maps for each area and shows which lockers are free right now ⓘ Haneda Airport. JR Kyushu publishes a list of lockers by station and size. Note that the list is dated 14 November 2025, so numbers may have changed ⓘ JR Kyushu.

With an IC card locker, the card can become your key. In JR East's Suica locker example, you pay with Suica and then tap it again to open. You cannot mix Suica and cash in that case ⓘ JR East. We could not open this source on the check date, so confirm on the JR East site.
If you pay cash at a Keihan IC locker, you get a receipt with a QR code (a square barcode). You need it to open the locker (Keihan). Metro Commerce lockers also print a slip, such as a proof of use or take-out ticket, and you must bring it back ⓘ Metro Commerce.
5How to use a coin locker, step by step
These steps follow JR East's Suica locker example ⓘ JR East. Other lockers may work a little differently, so follow the screen.
- Find a locker with a free door and the right size.
- Put your bag inside and close the door.
- On the screen, choose your payment, for example Suica.

- Tap the same card and the door opens. At cash lockers with a receipt, bring that receipt ⓘ Keihan, Metro Commerce.
6Time limits: when does a new day start?
This is the rule that surprises many people. A "day" does not always mean 24 hours. Each operator picks its own switch time.
- Midnight: Narita normal day lockers. If you store a bag at 9 p.m. and collect it at 1 a.m., you pay for 2 days ⓘ Narita Airport. JR Kyushu lockers also switch at midnight ⓘ JR Kyushu.
- 1 a.m.: Keihan lockers add one day after 1 a.m. (Keihan).
- 2 a.m.: Tokyu, Metro Commerce, and Narita's Multi e-cube lockers ⓘ Tokyu, Metro Commerce, Narita Airport.
- 24 hours after you start: Haneda T2 domestic lockers ⓘ Haneda Airport.
Some lockers use hour blocks instead. At Narita, lockers on Terminal 2 basement floor 1 and Terminal 3 main building floor 2 work by time. A small one is 300 yen for the first 6 hours, then 400 yen for each 24 hours after. Medium is 500 yen then 600 yen. Large is 600 yen then 800 yen ⓘ Narita Airport. An extra-large locker, 227 cm tall, costs 1,200 yen per 12 hours. It is only on Terminal 3 main building floor 2 ⓘ Narita Airport.
How long can you stay?
- Keihan: 3 days. After that, bags move to a storage place for up to 30 days (Keihan).
- Tokyu: 3 days, counting the first day. If a bag is not collected after 4 days or more, it moves to storage for 30 days, and there is a storage fee (Tokyu).

- Haneda T2 domestic: within 7 days of the start date ⓘ Haneda Airport.
- Narita: up to 8 days. Extra-large lockers allow up to 5 days ⓘ Narita Airport.

If your suitcase is very big, lockers may not be the best choice. One traveler explains other cheaper ways to store large suitcases.
9Mistakes first-timers make
- Thinking "1 day" means 24 hours -> Read the sign. Many lockers switch days at midnight, 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.
- Throwing away the receipt -> Keep it. At Keihan and Metro Commerce lockers, you need it to get your bag.
- Paying with one IC card and bringing another -> When the card is your key, use the same card to open the locker.
- Coming back after the last train -> Many station lockers run only from the first to the last train. Plan to collect your bag earlier.
- Choosing a locker that is too narrow -> In the official examples, most lockers are only about 34–36 cm wide. Look for wide lockers or a staffed bag counter.
