The fastest way from Fukuoka to Beppu is the JR limited express Sonic from Hakata Station. The fastest trips take about 2 hours ⓘ JR Kyushu. If you book online, the train costs about the same as the bus. The Toyonokuni highway bus takes about 2 hours 49 minutes from Tenjin and costs 3,250 yen one way (Nishitetsu). It also leaves straight from Fukuoka Airport's international terminal. For a simple round trip, the JR Kyushu Rail Pass usually does not pay off. It only makes sense if you add more train travel.

Bus + Beppu pass combo: Trip Kippu Beppu-Yufuin
If you plan to explore Beppu and Yufuin by local bus, look at the Trip Kippu Beppu-Yufuin (とりっぷきっぷ別府・ゆふいん) for 7,200 yen (Kamenoi Bus). It includes:
- A highway bus round-trip ticket.
- The "My Beppu Free 2-Day" pass, which gives unlimited rides on local buses in Beppu and Yufuin for 2 days.
You can buy it at the Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, Hakata Bus Terminal and Fukuoka Airport Bus Terminal (Kamenoi Bus).
5From Fukuoka Airport to Beppu
You have two good choices.
Option 1: Direct bus. The Toyonokuni bus stops at Fukuoka Airport International Terminal (Nishitetsu). If you arrive on an international flight, this is the simplest way. You just walk out and get on the bus. There is no change and no carrying bags through Hakata Station. Remember that you need a reservation.
The official page does not confirm a stop at the domestic terminal. If you land on a domestic flight, check the Nishitetsu website, or use Option 2.
Option 2: Subway + Sonic. Take the Fukuoka City Subway from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata. It takes about 5 minutes ⓘ Fukuoka City Subway. Then change to the Sonic at Hakata Station. The official source does not list the subway fare, so check at the station. This is usually the fastest option overall, especially for domestic arrivals.
6Does the JR Kyushu Rail Pass pay off for Beppu?
The JR Kyushu Rail Pass ⓘ Northern Kyushu Area covers the Sonic ⓘ JR Kyushu. The official page does not name the Hakata–Beppu section directly. But the pass covers the area north of Oita, and Beppu is inside that area.
Prices (adult / child 6–11) ⓘ JR Kyushu:
- 3 days: 15,000 yen / 7,500 yen
- 5 days: 17,000 yen / 8,500 yen
The official page does not say when these prices started. You may see older articles with lower prices. Trust the official page.
The math for a Beppu round trip:
- Full-price Sonic round trip: 6,910 × 2 = 13,820 yen ⓘ JR Kyushu
- Net Kippu round trip: 3,500 × 2 = 7,000 yen
- Hayatoku 3: 2,950 yen each way
- Highway bus WEB round trip: 5,760 yen
- 3-day Rail Pass: 15,000 yen
Verdict: for a simple Fukuoka–Beppu round trip, the pass costs more than even the full fare. It also costs about twice as much as the online tickets. The pass makes sense only if you take other trips in the same few days. For example, you might add a Kyushu Shinkansen trip from Hakata to Kumamoto. Add up your full fares and compare.
Key rules ⓘ JR Kyushu:
- Covers: local trains, limited expresses, the Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata–Kumamoto) and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo-Onsen–Nagasaki). The area goes to Kumamoto, Misumi and north of Oita.
- Does not cover: the Shinkansen between Kokura and Hakata, and JR buses.
- Reserved seats: free up to 6 times. After that, you pay an express ticket for each train. Online advance seat reservations cost 1,000 yen per section (half for children) and do not count toward the 6. If no reserved seats are left, use the non-reserved cars. Green Car costs extra.
- Consecutive days only. You cannot skip days.
- Who can buy it: non-Japanese visitors staying in Japan as "Temporary Visitors" for sightseeing. You must live outside Japan and hold a non-Japanese passport. You need the Temporary Visitor stamp or sticker in your passport.
- Where to buy: JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking, overseas travel agencies (exchange vouchers), or inside Kyushu. The page mentions a different online price but does not list the amount, so check when you buy. Check the official site for the list of exchange stations.
7Which option is best for you?
- You want speed and you start in central Fukuoka: take the Sonic from Hakata. Book the Net Kippu or Hayatoku 3.
- You land at the international terminal: take the Toyonokuni bus directly.
- You are on a tight budget: take the bus with the WEB round-trip ticket (2,880 yen each way). Or take the Hayatoku 3 train (2,950 yen) if you can book 3 days ahead.
- You will ride local buses in Beppu and Yufuin: get the Trip Kippu Beppu-Yufuin (7,200 yen).
- You are touring Kyushu by train for several days: compare the Rail Pass with your total fares.
- You are staying in Kannawa: the bus stop at Kannawa-guchi may be closer than Beppu Station.
8Mistakes first-timers make
- Buying a full-price ticket at the counter → Book the Kyushu Net Kippu or Hayatoku 3 online. Ticket counters do not sell them.
- Turning up for the bus without a booking → All Toyonokuni seats are reserved. Book online from 8:00 on the same date one month before.
- Buying a Rail Pass just for Beppu → A round trip costs less than the 3-day pass, even at full fare. Use the pass only for a multi-city trip.
- Expecting the bus at the domestic terminal → Only the international terminal stop is confirmed. From domestic arrivals, take the subway to Hakata and ride the Sonic.
- Forgetting traffic on the bus → The bus can be late. If you have a tight connection or check-in time, take the train.
