If you are travelling from Beppu to Yufuin, check the bus operator’s latest service notices before choosing a departure. The sightseeing rapid Yufurin has been suspended since 17 October 2026, and Kamenoi Bus directs passengers to route 36 for Yufuin from Beppu Station West Exit. A separate temporary direct service is scheduled for a limited period and has its own departure point, fare and payment rules.

The information below was checked on 4 November 2026. Service details, fares and availability can change, so confirm the notice and journey information for your actual travel date. In particular, do not assume that a general statement about normal bus operations means the suspended Yufurin has resumed.

1. Compare the bus choices

The practical choices described in the operator’s current information are route 36 and the temporary direct bus, if it is running on your date. Yufurin is not a current option according to the specific suspension notice: all sightseeing rapid Yufurin services have been suspended from 17 October 2026 until further notice. The table separates the services because their departure locations and payment conditions are not interchangeable.

Service Departure and period Fare and payment What to check
Route 36 for Yufuin Beppu Station West Exit. Check the departure for your date. Confirm the fare for your journey. General local-bus guidance lists cash, compatible IC cards and card tap payment. Use Bus Doko Oita for the date, stops, service and fare. See the Yufurin suspension and route 36 notice and the operator’s local-bus FAQ.
Temporary direct bus Beppu Station front, stop 5; scheduled departure 09:30. The notice gives a planned operating period of 1 October 2026–31 March 2027. Adult ¥1,100; child ¥550. Cash and IC cards are accepted; card tap payment is not accepted. Check the direct-service notice for updates and capacity. The checked notice does not establish a booking method or arrival time.
Sightseeing rapid Yufurin All services suspended from 17 October 2026 until further notice. Do not plan using an older Yufurin timetable. Check the specific suspension notice for a later update.

For a simple comparison, the direct service has a published fare and departure time, but the notice warns that a full bus may leave passengers behind. Route 36 is the operator’s stated alternative, but you need to check its current departure and fare rather than assuming that details from the direct service also apply to it. If you are travelling from Kannawa, the notice directs you to return to Beppu Station West Exit and transfer to route 36.

The direct bus and route 36 also use different departure descriptions: the direct bus leaves from Beppu Station front stop 5, while route 36 is identified with Beppu Station West Exit. Confirm the correct stop for the service you intend to use before setting out. Do not wait at one departure point on the assumption that it serves both buses.

JLINHH’s Oita travel video introduces sights in Beppu and Yufuin, including Lake Kinrin. It can provide destination context, but use the operator’s current notices and journey information—not a video or an older timetable—to decide which bus is operating on your date.

2. Take the temporary direct bus

Kamenoi Bus’s notice schedules a temporary direct service between Beppu Station front and Yufuin Station bus centre. It lists a 09:30 departure from stop 5 at Beppu Station front, with the service planned to run from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Check the operator’s direct-service notice again before travel, especially if your date is close to the end of the stated period or falls outside it.

Stop 5→09:30→Adult ¥1,100→Yufuin bus centre
The temporary direct service has its own payment rules.

The published one-way fare is ¥1,100 for an adult and ¥550 for a child. On those listed fares, two adults would pay ¥2,200 one way, while one adult and one child would pay ¥1,650 one way. These examples cover only the bus fare; they do not include local transport or activities in Yufuin. For the operator’s general child-fare category, the local-bus FAQ describes children as elementary-school age or younger; check with the operator if you are unsure how a particular traveller is classified.

The notice lists cash and IC cards as accepted payment on this direct service. It specifically excludes card tap payment, so do not rely on tapping a contactless bank card even though the general local-bus guidance lists card tap payment for regular routes. The listed accepted passes are the Wide one-day ticket, the Wide two-day ticket and the SUNQ Pass. Check the pass terms and your full itinerary before buying a pass; being accepted on this bus does not by itself establish that a pass is worthwhile for your trip.

The operator warns that the direct bus may be full and passengers may be unable to board. If you cannot get on, the notice points passengers to route 36 instead. Treat that as a contingency, not as a guaranteed immediate departure: check route 36’s service and fare for your date, and leave flexibility in any plans that depend on a particular arrival time.

The checked notice does not establish a reservation method or an arrival time. Do not assign the journey a duration based on an older service or assume that the 09:30 departure will reach Yufuin by a particular time. If you have a timed onward plan, allow room for uncertainty and verify the latest information with the operator.

Jen Barangan shares a Beppu and Yufuin day-trip video that includes travel expenses. Use it as an individual trip reference rather than as confirmation of current fares, bus availability or operating arrangements.

3. Travel on route 36 or from Kannawa

Kamenoi Bus identifies route 36 for Yufuin from Beppu Station West Exit as the alternative to the suspended sightseeing rapid Yufurin. From Kannawa, the suspension notice directs travellers to go to Beppu Station West Exit and transfer to route 36. The notice does not provide the exact departure from every Kannawa stop, so check your starting stop and connection before leaving.

Kannawa→Beppu Station West Exit→Route 36→Yufuin
Route 36 and the temporary direct bus depart from different locations.

To plan the route 36 leg, open the operator’s local-bus information and use Bus Doko Oita to search for your travel date, starting point and destination. Confirm the departure time, boarding stop and fare shown for that journey. The operator’s local-bus FAQ identifies Bus Doko Oita as the place to check times, fares and service information.

Plan the return at the same time as the outbound trip. Search for a suitable Yufuin-to-Beppu service and check the last departure available on your date before committing to a day-trip schedule. The information available here does not establish route 36’s current journey time or final return departure, so do not fill those gaps with details from a timetable for the suspended Yufurin.

A practical check before you travel is to compare both directions in the same journey search, then save the relevant results. Check that you have the correct boarding point for each leg: route 36 is associated with Beppu Station West Exit, while the temporary direct bus is listed at Beppu Station front stop 5. If you are starting in Kannawa, include the transfer back at Beppu Station West Exit in your plan and verify the timing of both legs.

At Beppu Station, follow the signs for the west exit if you are taking route 36, and use the separate stop 5 information if you are taking the temporary direct service. These are different locations in the service information, so confirm the departure point rather than relying on the general phrase “Beppu Station.” The operator’s suspension notice is the source for the route 36 alternative and the Kannawa transfer guidance.

Do not treat the operator’s general header or a timetable for another service as proof that Yufurin is running. The specific notice says the sightseeing rapid is suspended from 17 October 2026 until further notice; check that notice for a later update before travelling. A general statement that bus services are operating normally does not, by itself, cancel this individual suspension.

4. Tickets, luggage and accessibility

Kamenoi Bus’s local-bus FAQ says that no change is given on board. It also says that ¥2,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 notes cannot be exchanged, so prepare suitable cash if you intend to pay in cash. The FAQ says nationally interoperable IC cards can be used; check that your card and your chosen service accept the payment method you plan to use.

Payment rules differ by service. The general local-bus guidance lists cash, IC cards and card tap payment for regular routes, but the temporary direct-service notice specifically excludes card tap payment while accepting cash and IC cards. Check the conditions for the exact bus you plan to take rather than applying a general local-bus rule to the direct service. The direct-service notice also lists the Wide one-day and two-day tickets and the SUNQ Pass as accepted.

Free passes are not sold on the bus, according to the operator FAQ. If you are considering a pass, check its terms and where it can be obtained before boarding. The operator’s value-ticket page provides information on its tickets; it also discusses reservation requirements for highway buses, which should not be treated as proof of the booking rules for this temporary local service.

The FAQ says that suitcases may be brought aboard. Bicycles must be folded, and pets must be in a carrier. If you are travelling with an item that does not fit those descriptions, or have a specific requirement, check with the operator before setting out rather than assuming that it can be carried.

For wheelchair boarding, tell the driver. The operator says boarding may be refused if the wheelchair space is already occupied, and some stops may not support wheelchair boarding. Because both the bus and stop can affect whether boarding is possible, contact the operator about your intended service and stops if accessible boarding is important to your journey.

For a stroller, the operator asks passengers to fold it and hold the child on a passenger’s lap. Include this in your boarding plan, especially if you are travelling with several people or luggage. These are operator instructions, not a guarantee that every bus or stop will suit every individual need, so ask the operator about your particular circumstances.

The FAQ says local-bus fare receipts are not issued. For a delay certificate, ask at a sales office or bus centre. If you need a document for a business journey or to record a disrupted connection, check how to obtain it before travelling rather than expecting the driver to issue it on board.

5. Plan your time after arrival

The temporary direct service is listed as arriving at Yufuin Station bus centre, while the operator’s route information should be checked for the arrival stop on route 36. Confirm your stop against your onward plan, particularly if someone is meeting you or you have accommodation away from the station area. Do not infer an arrival time for the direct bus from its 09:30 departure: the checked notice does not state one.

Yufuin bus centre→Lake Kinrin→Return stop→Beppu
Work backwards from the return bus.

Lake Kinrin is one of Yufuin’s representative scenic spots. Yufu City explains that both clear spring water and hot-spring water flow into the lake, and its official page describes steam on early winter mornings. That atmospheric view is not guaranteed on any particular visit; check the city’s Lake Kinrin information and map when planning the next leg.

If an onsen visit is a priority, check the individual bath’s admission price, opening hours, last entry and access directly with that facility. Those details are not established by the bus notices, and they can affect how much time you need in Yufuin. Leave time to return to the bus centre before the departure you intend to take, and verify that service’s departure for your date.

For an overnight stay, confirm the property’s address and how you will travel from your arrival point before choosing a bus. A service that reaches the station-front bus centre may not be the most convenient choice for every accommodation location, while the information available here does not establish onward transport details. Include your return-to-Beppu plan in the same check if you are making a day trip.

Sophie shares a Beppu and Yufuin travel guide featuring local food and an onsen stay. It can offer ideas for the destination, but check each restaurant or bath directly for current details, and use the bus operator’s notices for transport planning.

6. Frequently asked questions

Is the sightseeing rapid Yufurin running?

The operator’s notice says that all sightseeing rapid Yufurin services have been suspended from 17 October 2026 until further notice. It names route 36 for Yufuin from Beppu Station West Exit as an alternative and directs travellers starting in Kannawa to transfer at Beppu Station West Exit. Read the specific suspension notice for any later update; an older Yufurin timetable or a general operating-status header does not establish that the service has resumed.

Is there a direct bus from Beppu to Yufuin?

A temporary direct bus is scheduled from Beppu Station front stop 5 at 09:30, with a planned operating period of 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. The notice lists Yufuin Station bus centre as its other stop, but does not establish an arrival time or reservation method in the checked information. Check the direct-service notice before travel, including its warning that a full bus may leave passengers behind.

How much does the temporary direct bus cost?

The listed one-way fare is ¥1,100 for an adult and ¥550 for a child. That makes the listed fare ¥2,200 for two adults or ¥1,650 for one adult and one child, one way; these amounts cover the bus only. The notice also lists the Wide one-day ticket, Wide two-day ticket and SUNQ Pass as accepted, so check the terms and your wider itinerary before choosing a pass.

Can I tap a bank card on the direct bus?

No. The temporary direct-service notice specifically excludes card tap payment, although it accepts cash and IC cards. The operator’s general local-bus FAQ lists card tap payment for regular routes, so treat this as a service-specific exception and check the payment rules for the exact bus you will board.

Do I need to reserve the direct bus?

The checked direct-service notice does not establish a reservation method. It does warn that the bus may be full and passengers may not be able to board, so do not assume that a seat is available. Check the operator’s latest notice before travelling and keep route 36 in mind as the stated alternative if you cannot board.

How long does the bus take, and what is the last bus back?

The checked information does not establish route 36’s journey time, the direct service’s arrival time or the last return departure for your date. Search Bus Doko Oita for both directions and check the stops and departure times for your travel day. If you need help with the Yufuin bus centre, the published contact number is 0977-84-3145; the operator’s ticket information is available on its value-ticket page.

Can I use a JR pass on the bus?

The checked direct-service notice names the Wide one-day and two-day tickets and the SUNQ Pass, but does not establish that a JR pass is valid. Check the terms of your specific pass and confirm with the operator before relying on it for this journey. Do not assume that a pass accepted on one service is valid on another.

Can I bring luggage, a stroller or a wheelchair?

The operator’s FAQ says suitcases may be brought aboard, bicycles must be folded and pets must be in a carrier. It asks passengers to fold strollers and hold the child on a passenger’s lap; wheelchair users should tell the driver, and boarding may be refused if the wheelchair space is occupied or the stop does not support wheelchair boarding. For a specific bus, stop or accessibility need, contact the operator before travel.
