Onsen near Tokyo: Hakone and Gunma trips compared
Contents
For onsen near Tokyo, start with your departure station and the bath's entry rules. Hakone-Yumoto has a direct reserved-seat train from Shinjuku; Gunma offers several different hot-spring towns.
An onsen is a hot spring, while an onsen town contains accommodation, baths and other places to visit. Reaching the town or its nearest station is only part of the trip. You still need to reach a bath, enter during its reception hours and make the return journey.
Roy and Aimee | Japan Outdoors presents a private-onsen visit in Hakone. It offers a visual introduction to private bathing as a travel choice, separate from the operator-specific arrangements below.
1Onsen near Tokyo: compare starting points and travel times
Hakone and Gunma should not be compared using an unexplained “from Tokyo” time. Shinjuku, Ueno and Tokyo Station are different starting points, and a journey to a rail gateway is different from a journey to the hot-spring town itself.
| Destination or gateway | Published starting point and transport | Approximate time | What the figure means | Source checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hakone-Yumoto | Shinjuku, Romancecar | 80 minutes | Train to Hakone-Yumoto, not to every bath or hotel | S3; 4 November 2026 |
| Takasaki | Tokyo, Shinkansen | 50 minutes | Gateway to Gunma; onward local train or bus remains | S1; 4 November 2026 |
| Kusatsu | Ueno, rail and bus | 2 hours 40 minutes | Published travel guide estimate | S1; 4 November 2026 |
| Kusatsu | Shinjuku, direct highway bus | 4 hours | Alternative route from a different starting point | S1; 4 November 2026 |
| Ikaho | Tokyo, direct highway bus | 2½ hours | Tourism guide estimate | S1; 4 November 2026 |
| Ikaho | Limited express and local bus | A little over 2 hours | Confirm the precise service before choosing it | S1; 4 November 2026 |
| Manza | Tokyo, Shinkansen, local train and bus | 3 hours 15 minutes | A multi-part journey | S1; 4 November 2026 |
| Shima | Tokyo, direct highway bus | 3½ hours | Tourism guide estimate | S1; 4 November 2026 |
Gunma's travel guide was updated in August 2024. Its approximate times help compare the structure of the trip, but are not a substitute for your travel-date timetable. The final walk, a missed connection or a hotel transfer can change the practical length of the day.
Before reserving a bath or hotel, place the return journey beside the outward journey. A late closing time at a bath does not establish that there is a convenient train or bus home afterwards. Our Japan public transport guide helps with the wider planning questions.

2Onsen near Tokyo: Hakone and the two-ticket train journey
The Romancecar runs directly from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto and has reserved seating throughout. You need both a basic train ticket and a limited-express ticket. The published adult limited-express charge for Shinjuku–Hakone-Yumoto is ¥1,200. This is the limited-express component, not the whole train fare. ⓘ S3, checked 4 November 2026.
That distinction is useful when comparing rail with a bus journey or another route. Comparing a full bus fare against only the Romancecar supplement would give the wrong impression of the total. On the official Romancecar page, check the complete ticket combination for your date and passenger category.
At Hakone Yuryo, the public bathing area is listed as open from 10:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 21:00 on weekends and holidays. Children below elementary-school age cannot use that public area. The facility directs families with younger children towards its private baths. ⓘ S4, checked 4 November 2026.
Private bathing is therefore a separate choice with a practical reason, rather than simply a more expensive version of public bathing. Confirm the private room's availability, permitted group and booking arrangement directly with Hakone Yuryo before setting the family itinerary.
For a wider look at the area, read our Hakone onsen guide. Keep each facility's rules attached to its name; one bath's child policy does not describe every bath in Hakone.
The Onsen Guy's selection of hot springs near Tokyo gives another visual starting point for comparing different kinds of bathing destinations.

3Onsen near Tokyo: choose a Gunma town by its setting
Kusatsu, Ikaho, Manza and Shima are different destinations. Choose the town you want to explore, then check the exact bath, accommodation and route rather than treating Gunma as one interchangeable hot-spring stop.
Kusatsu has the central Yubatake hot-water field. Gunma's tourism guide identifies Sainokawara Open-Air Bath, Gozanoyu and Otakinoyu as day-use bathing options, and Netsunoyu as a place introducing yumomi, the traditional stirring of hot spring water. The day-use list establishes choices to investigate; it does not establish one shared admission price or opening schedule. ⓘ S1.
Heyulbap's Kusatsu video presents a two-night stay and traditional-inn travel around the hot springs.
Ikaho is centred on its stone steps and has the two named waters Kogane no Yu and Shirogane no Yu. If the stone-step setting is central to your choice, consider your group's comfort with walking as well as the journey time. Use the tourism guide to find the town, then ask your intended bath or hotel about its own approach. ⓘ S1.
Sol Life's Ikaho trip shows the town as a place to explore as well as to bathe.
Manza is at an elevation of about 1,800 metres. Its published Tokyo journey combines the Shinkansen, local rail and a bus. Treat it as a connected itinerary rather than comparing only the fastest train segment with another town's whole journey. Travel-date services and winter road conditions need their own checks. ⓘ S1.
Shima has the Shima River running through the town and a direct highway-bus option from Tokyo in the tourism guide. Its published approximate bus time is 3½ hours. That makes the return service an especially important part of deciding between a day trip and a stay. ⓘ S1.
Paul on Vacation's Shima video, listed in the Korean-language creator collection, presents a stay in the mountain hot-spring village.
4Onsen near Tokyo: Minakami transport and Takaragawa day use
Minakami's tourism association lists both the Joetsu Shinkansen and the Joetsu Line for rail access. Car-rental operators are listed at Minakami Station and Jomo-Kogen Station. Choose the station that fits the onward journey to your actual destination, rather than assuming every rail option ends at the same place. ⓘ S2.
Local taxis are limited, and advance reservation is recommended. The association warns that there may be no stationed taxis after 16:00. If you rely on a taxi for the last leg, arrange it before travelling rather than leaving the decision until you reach the station. ⓘ S2, checked 4 November 2026.
Payment also differs between buses. Kan-etsu Kotsu local buses accept cash and transport IC cards. The municipal bus between Sarugakyo and Hoshi Onsen accepts cash only and has no onboard change machine. Prepare the required cash in advance for that municipal section. An IC card is useful, but it does not remove every cash requirement. ⓘ S2.
| Takaragawa Sanso day-use option | Published admission | Included item | Transport condition | Source checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥1,500 | Bathing-garment rental | No pickup service for day visitors | S5; 4 November 2026 |
| Child | ¥1,000 | Bathing-garment rental | Arrange the arrival and return independently | S5; 4 November 2026 |
The bathing garment is part of the listed admission. A transfer is not: Takaragawa Sanso says it does not provide pickup for day-use customers. Price the actual onward transport separately and check the latest day-use arrangements on the operator's page.

5Onsen near Tokyo: booking questions and a usable budget
A useful budget separates train fare, supplements, local transport, bath admission and any room booking. For Takaragawa, ¥1,500 is the listed adult day-use admission including the bathing garment. For Romancecar, ¥1,200 is only the listed adult limited-express component. Adding figures from unrelated options would not produce a meaningful trip total. ⓘ S3 and S5, checked 4 November 2026.
For private bathing, ask the chosen operator about group size, session length, child rules, tattoo policy, what is included and cancellation conditions. Do not transfer answers from one facility to another. Our private onsen guide explains that choice, while the onsen etiquette guide covers preparation for bathing.
Kirari TV's Thai-language Kusatsu video introduces the destination to another visitor audience and provides a different visual perspective on the town.

Is Hakone-Yumoto the bath itself?
No. Hakone-Yumoto is the Romancecar rail destination. Your chosen bath or accommodation has its own location and access arrangements. Include that final segment when deciding whether the journey fits your day. ⓘ S3 and S4.
Can a preschool child use Hakone Yuryo's public bath?
Hakone Yuryo's public bathing area excludes children below elementary-school age. The operator points younger families towards private bathing. Confirm the intended private bath directly before reserving transport. ⓘ S4.
Does Takaragawa admission include a station transfer?
No. The listed admission includes bathing-garment rental, while the operator states that it does not provide pickup for day-use customers. Arrange arrival and return separately. ⓘ S5.
Can I use a transport IC card for every Minakami bus?
No. Kan-etsu Kotsu buses accept cash and transport IC cards, but the Sarugakyo–Hoshi Onsen municipal bus is cash-only without an onboard change machine. Check the operator of the actual service you plan to use. ⓘ S2.
What should I check first for a day trip?
Check the return journey, the last local connection and the bath's entry conditions together. Use the official Gunma onsen guide to choose a destination, then confirm the facility and travel-date services before booking.
