Universal Studios Japan Guide: Tickets, Nintendo Entry, Rides and Hotels
Contents
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is a theme park in Osaka with attractions based on Mario, Donkey Kong, Harry Potter, the Minions and more. For a first visit, allow a full day: buy a Studio Pass for your chosen date, set up the official app and decide how you want to enter Super Nintendo World.
The park is at 2-1-33 Sakurajima, Konohana-ku, Osaka. Its nearest railway station is Universal City Station, on the JR Yumesaki Line. From the station, follow signs through the Universal CityWalk area toward the park entrance. (usj.co.jp)
Tickets, opening hours and Express Passes
Start by comparing dates on the official ticket list and the park schedule. Admission prices and opening hours vary by date. If your plans are flexible, compare a few weekdays and weekends, taking both the price and the length of the park day into account.
Choose a Studio Pass
A Studio Pass provides park admission. The following starting prices include tax; the price shown for your date may be higher. (usj.co.jp)
| Pass | Adult from | Child from | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Studio Pass | ¥8,400 | ¥5,500 | One selected day |
| 1.5 Day Studio Pass | ¥13,600 | ¥8,900 | From 3 p.m. on day one, then from opening on day two |
| 2 Day Studio Pass | ¥16,000 | ¥10,500 | Two park days |
| Twilight Pass | ¥5,900 | ¥3,900 | Entry from 3 p.m. |
The one-day senior pass starts at ¥7,600. Adult pricing generally applies from age 12, child pricing from ages 4–11, and children aged 3 and under enter free. USJ also explains its school-year transition rule on the ticket page.
A 1 Day Studio Pass suits a trip built around one full park day. Consider the 1.5 Day Pass if you arrive in Osaka in the afternoon and want a first look around before a longer second day. The 2 Day Pass gives you more room to split rides, meals and shopping across your visit.
USJ also lists a Holiday Kids Free Pass for eligible visits from November 13 through December 30, 2026: one qualifying child aged 4–11 can enter free with a participating adult. Read the offer’s purchase and eligibility conditions on the ticket page before selecting it. (usj.co.jp)
Buy before you reach the gate
Ticket sales at the entrance booths have ended. Use the USJ ticket site, or a Lawson Loppi machine for eligible ticket types. USJ lists same-day sales of several admission passes at Loppi, but not same-day Express Pass sales there. (usj.co.jp)
Before paying, review your visit date, party size, ages, delivery method and total. Save each guest’s ticket QR code where you can find it at the gate. The USJ web-store terms explain ticket delivery, payment and the applicable change and cancellation conditions.
Decide whether to add an Express Pass
An Express Pass is an extra purchase for shorter waits at its listed attractions. You still need a Studio Pass or another admission ticket. Some Express Passes also include a specified entry time for Super Nintendo World.
The official Express Pass list includes these options:
| Express Pass | Starting price | Attractions included |
|---|---|---|
| Express Pass 7 — Trolley & Selection | ¥21,800 | Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Yoshi, two Harry Potter rides and one ride from each of two choice groups |
| Express Pass 4 — Trolley & Jurassic Park | ¥14,800 | Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Minion Mayhem and a choice of Jaws or Jurassic Park The Ride |
Both appear under USJ’s area-entry-included selection. Sales quantities are limited, and some rides have assigned times. USJ says Express Pass sales begin approximately two months before the visit date. (usj.co.jp)
For a one-day trip with several must-do rides, compare the attractions and time slots rather than buying solely by the number of rides. If your group is happy to adapt to queues, you can use the app throughout the day and spend the extra money on meals or another park day.
How to enter Super Nintendo World
On busy days, USJ may control access to Super Nintendo World with an area ticket. On other days, visitors may be admitted without one. An area ticket is separate from park admission.
There are three practical ways to plan:
- Book an eligible Express Pass in advance. Choose a product that explicitly includes Super Nintendo World entry and note its assigned time.
- Request a timed-entry ticket in the app after entering the park. Select the people in your party and an available entry time.
- Apply for a standby-entry lottery if offered. The app displays the result; only the people covered by a winning ticket can enter with it.
Before your visit, download the official USJ app and register each person’s admission-ticket QR code together. After everyone has entered the park, open the area-ticket section, select your group and follow the available prompts. At the area entrance, show the area-ticket QR code in the app. USJ’s English area-ticket instructions show the process. (usj.co.jp)
If Nintendo is your group’s priority, make this your first app task after passing through the main gate. Once you have an entry time, arrange the rest of the day around it. Inside the area, leave time for the scenery as well as rides: USJ’s area guide points visitors toward interactive blocks and hidden details throughout the Mario-themed setting. (usj.co.jp)
Rides and height requirements
Use the official park map to group nearby attractions, restaurants and shops. The app also shows wait times, making it useful for choosing between a ride now and another activity nearby.
| Attraction | Area | Height requirement | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge | Super Nintendo World | At least 107 cm | For Mario Kart fans who want the themed racing experience |
| Donkey Kong’s Crazy Mine-Cart | Super Nintendo World | At least 107 cm | For a Donkey Kong-themed ride |
| Yoshi’s Adventure | Super Nintendo World | At least 92 cm | A Nintendo option for shorter children |
| Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey | Wizarding World of Harry Potter | At least 122 cm | For visitors who want a major Harry Potter attraction |
| Flight of the Hippogriff | Wizarding World of Harry Potter | 92–195 cm | A Harry Potter ride option for families with younger children |
On Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Flight of the Hippogriff, children below 122 cm who meet the ride minimum need a supervising companion. The official height page also lists requirements for Minion Park and other areas. (usj.co.jp)
For a child measuring 115 cm, Mario Kart and Donkey Kong meet the listed minimum with a companion; Forbidden Journey requires at least 122 cm. Measure children before the trip and make a shared ride list so the whole group knows which attractions to prioritize.
Families with smaller children can also look at Universal Wonderland. Minion fans can explore Minion Park, while dinosaur fans can consult the map and current attraction status for Jurassic Park. Keep a nearby backup in mind in case a ride is closed or its queue is longer than your group wants to wait.
Food inside USJ and at Universal CityWalk
With an ordinary Studio Pass, plan to stay inside the park until you are ready to leave for the day. Universal CityWalk Osaka is outside the park and works well for breakfast before admission or dinner after your final exit.
Kinopio’s Cafe
Kinopio’s Cafe, inside Super Nintendo World, is a good choice if a themed meal is part of your Nintendo plan. Its menu includes burgers, pasta, children’s meals and plant-based dishes.
The published menu lists the Mario Burger with bacon and cheese at ¥2,600, Yoshi’s spinach carbonara spaghetti at ¥2,500, and a children’s curry set at ¥1,400. Those three dishes total ¥6,500. The curry set includes a dessert and orange drink and is intended for children aged six and under. (usj.co.jp)
Allow meal time within your Nintendo visit and ask at the restaurant about the day’s entry arrangements. Restaurant hours are listed separately from overall park hours.
Three Broomsticks
For a Harry Potter-themed meal, Three Broomsticks serves British-style dishes in a Hogsmeade tavern setting. The official menu lists fish and chips for ¥2,600, a smoked chicken and shepherd’s pie meal for ¥3,000, and non-alcoholic Butterbeer for ¥900. Fish and chips with a regular Butterbeer comes to ¥3,500. (usj.co.jp)
What to bring and where to eat outside
USJ generally asks guests not to eat food brought from outside inside the park. If you need baby food, snacks for a young child or food for dietary reasons, speak to a crew member. A picnic area is available outside the arch gate on the parking side, so use it before entering if you are carrying a picnic.
Water bottles and flasks are useful for a long day. Alcohol, cans, glass bottles and drink containers that cannot be sealed are among the items on USJ’s prohibited-items list. Suitcases and other large bags are also restricted; arrange luggage storage before reaching security. (usj.co.jp)
Dinner at CityWalk
Universal CityWalk Osaka is adjacent to the park. Its fourth- and fifth-floor restaurants generally operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., while the fourth-floor TAKOPA area generally closes at 10 p.m. Individual hours vary. (ucw.jp)
For an Osaka specialty, Juhachiban serves takoyaki: octopus-filled batter balls with a crisp exterior and soft center. Its listed three-flavor assortment is ¥1,620, making it a useful choice for sharing after the park. The shop is on CityWalk’s fourth floor and lists usual hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (ucw.jp)
Getting to Universal Studios Japan
USJ’s train access guide gives the following approximate travel times to Universal City Station. Add time for connections, the walk to the gate and security. (usj.co.jp)
| Starting point | Approximate travel time |
|---|---|
| Nishikujo Station | 5 minutes |
| Osaka Station | 11 minutes |
| Shin-Osaka Station | 16 minutes |
| JR Namba Station | 15 minutes |
| Osaka-Namba Station | 13 minutes |
| Itami Airport | 35 minutes |
| Kansai International Airport | 65 minutes |
From central Osaka, some journeys involve a change at Nishikujo. Look at the train’s destination and your route planner rather than assuming every Osaka Loop Line train continues to Universal City.
Namba has several stations, so select the one nearest your hotel. This Namba-to-Universal City transit map lets you set a departure time and compare routes.
Kansai Airport bus
The Kansai Airport limousine bus connects Terminal 1 and USJ in approximately 50–70 minutes. The fare is ¥1,800 per adult or ¥900 per child one way. An adult round-trip ticket costs ¥3,300 and is valid for 14 days; the operator lists no child round-trip fare. The bus is first come, first served rather than reservation-based. (kate.co.jp)
The operator’s e-ticket is a one-way product. If you want the adult return discount, use the ticket-purchase options shown by the bus operator. For a park-day arrival, compare departure times carefully: a direct bus can be convenient with luggage, while the train may offer more choices throughout the day.
Where to stay
A hotel near Universal City is convenient for an early start, a late finish and leaving luggage outside the park. For a trip that also includes restaurants, shopping or onward rail travel, compare it with a stay near Osaka Station, Namba or Shin-Osaka.
The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan
The Park Front Hotel sits in front of the park entrance. Its location is useful for families who want a short walk at the end of a long day. The hotel sells Studio Passes to staying guests and may sell Express Passes at its counter while stock remains. (parkfront-hotel.com)
Hotel Kintetsu Universal City
Hotel Kintetsu Universal City is an official hotel in the CityWalk area. It suits visitors who want restaurants and shops close to their room as well as a straightforward walk to the park. Its location also places it near a CityWalk airport-bus stop. (miyakohotels.ne.jp)
Hotel Universal Port
Hotel Universal Port is an official hotel in the nearby bayside area. Osaka’s tourism bureau highlights its Minion-themed rooms, making it an appealing choice for families who want the theme-park experience to continue at the hotel. (osaka-info.jp)
When comparing rooms, enter your exact dates and party size, then look at the total for the stay, breakfast options and cancellation deadline. If you need luggage storage before check-in, ask the hotel directly with your arrival date and estimated arrival time.
A practical one-day plan and budget
Before leaving your hotel: Have breakfast, leave large luggage behind and open your ticket QR codes. Keep your phone charged and allow time for the journey and entrance screening.
At the gate: Enter with every member of your group. If Super Nintendo World is a priority and you do not already have an included entry time, open the app and request the available area ticket together.
Morning: Start with a high-priority attraction that fits everyone’s height. If its wait is longer than you want, choose a nearby backup rather than crossing the park repeatedly.
Lunch: Eat inside the park. If you have a Nintendo entry time around lunch, consider Kinopio’s Cafe; for a Harry Potter-focused visit, Three Broomsticks gives you a meal without leaving that area.
Afternoon: Use the app to compare waits, visit your timed-entry area and leave room for shopping or a second ride. Keep any Express Pass ride times visible in your notes.
Evening: Finish with an attraction or meal inside the park, then head to CityWalk for a snack or dinner after your final exit. Look up the return train or bus before leaving the park.
Put the main costs together
For two adults and one child aged six or under, using the starting admission prices and the Kinopio’s Cafe dishes above:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Two adult 1 Day Studio Passes, from | ¥16,800 |
| One child 1 Day Studio Pass, from | ¥5,500 |
| Mario Burger, Yoshi’s Spaghetti and children’s curry set | ¥6,500 |
| Admission and listed dishes, from | ¥28,800 |
Add ¥4,500 for one-way Kansai Airport bus fares for two adults and one child, giving a starting subtotal of ¥33,300. Express Passes, other meals, accommodation, souvenirs and the return journey are separate expenses. Use your selected date’s ticket prices to replace the starting admission figures before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave USJ for lunch and return?
Ordinary admission tickets do not allow re-entry after you leave. Eat inside the park, use the outside picnic area before admission, or visit CityWalk after your final exit. Annual-pass rules differ.
Is an Express Pass the same as a Studio Pass?
No. A Studio Pass provides park admission; an Express Pass is an optional extra for selected attraction queues. Some Express Pass products also include timed entry to Super Nintendo World.
Can I enter Super Nintendo World without an area ticket?
USJ may allow walk-in entry on some days. When area-entry controls are operating, use the app to request the available timed or standby ticket, or enter at the time included with an eligible advance product.
What if I have an allergy or need assistance?
Speak to a crew member about your food requirements. For help inside the park, use Guest Services. For web-ticket questions, USJ lists 0570-20-0606 and 06-6465-4005 for some IP or international calls, with operator assistance from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (usj.co.jp)
