Tokyo to Nagoya: Shinkansen Tickets, Seats and Luggage
Contents
Tokyo and Nagoya are connected by the Tokaido Shinkansen, with Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama services listed as eligible trains for Smart EX. For an adult travelling one way in an ordinary-car reserved seat during the regular season, the published Smart EX fare is ¥11,100 on Nozomi or ¥10,890 on Hikari and Kodama. Those figures come from a fare table dated 1 April 2025; they are not a promise of the current price for every date, ticket or way of buying. Check the amount and conditions for your own journey before you pay. (Smart EX fare table, checked 4 November 2026.)
The best train and ticket depend on your departure date, the available seats, your preferred seat type and whether you are travelling with oversized baggage. Smart EX provides ticketless travel using a registered transport IC card, but its conditions also matter: connecting conventional-line fares are separate, the product does not allow stopovers, and it cannot be combined with other discounts. For a specific journey, check the operator’s booking information and compare the available products rather than treating a sample fare as a guaranteed total. (Smart EX service information; official fare comparison)
The official information cited here does not establish one guaranteed journey time or the first and last train for every travel date. Use the operator’s timetable and booking screen to check the actual departure and arrival times for your day. A traveller’s view of the journey is also available in From the Window Seat’s Tokyo-to-Nagoya Shinkansen video.
Compare the published Smart EX fares
The following figures are for an adult, one-way, ordinary-car reserved seat in the regular season. They are prices for the named Smart EX product, not general station-counter fares or a guaranteed total for every date. The fare table is referenced by Smart EX’s service information and carries a reference date of 1 April 2025; check the price shown for your own booking. (Smart EX service information; ordinary-car reserved-seat fare table, checked 4 November 2026.)
| Train | Smart EX regular-season adult one-way reserved-seat fare | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Nozomi | ¥11,100 | Ordinary-car reserved seat; Smart EX combines the base-fare and express-ticket components |
| Hikari | ¥10,890 | Ordinary-car reserved seat under the same fare-table conditions |
| Kodama | ¥10,890 | Ordinary-car reserved seat under the same fare-table conditions |
Smart EX says ordinary-car reserved-seat prices vary by season, so do not carry the regular-season figures over to a different travel period as though they were fixed. The table also does not give a universal price for every ticket type: ordinary-car non-reserved seats, Green Car seats, child products and other ticket products need their own price check. Use the official Smart EX fare comparison to compare the products it presents, then confirm the amount shown for your date, train, passenger count and seat type.
The published Smart EX Shinkansen fare does not include any connecting conventional-line fare. Smart EX states that conventional-line fares connecting with the Shinkansen are separate, and that its product does not permit a stopover. If you will travel on another line before reaching Tokyo or after arriving in Nagoya, check those parts of the itinerary separately rather than assuming they are included in the Shinkansen price. (Smart EX service information)
A traveller’s perspective on the route is available in Jay and Karolina’s Tokyo-to-Nagoya Shinkansen video. It can offer a visual sense of a journey, but use the operator’s booking information for fares, seat availability and ticket conditions.
Choose between Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama
Smart EX lists Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama as eligible services. The published regular-season fare table gives Nozomi an adult one-way ordinary-car reserved-seat fare of ¥11,100 and gives Hikari and Kodama the fare of ¥10,890. That is a comparison of the specific Smart EX product and seat type in the table, not a complete comparison of every ticket or departure. (Smart EX service information; fare table)
Choose by checking the actual departure and arrival times for your date, the seats available and the price shown for your chosen product. The official facts available for this guide do not establish one journey duration that applies to every service and travel date. Avoid relying on a generic travel-time estimate when you need to plan a connection or arrive by a particular time; confirm the timetable for the train you intend to take.
Smart EX offers ordinary-car reserved seats, ordinary-car non-reserved seats and Green Car seats. The fare examples above apply only to ordinary-car reserved seats, so they should not be used as a price for a non-reserved or Green Car ticket. Child products are also available, but the adult figures in the table are not child prices; check the booking screen for the passenger and seat type you need. (Smart EX service information)
For a practical comparison, start with the travel date and the service you are considering, then compare the departure and arrival times, seat type and displayed fare. Include any separately charged conventional-line travel in your overall budget. If you will bring a bag whose three dimensions total more than 160 cm, check the baggage rules before selecting a seat, because the required baggage arrangement can affect which reservation you need.
Nozomi during specified busy periods
JR Central says Nozomi trains are all reserved during certain specified busy periods. Its listed dates include 21–23 November 2026, 25 December 2026–5 January 2027, and 9–11 January 2027. These are specified periods, not a rule that all Shinkansen services have reserved seating throughout the year. Check JR Central’s Nozomi notice for the applicable dates and your intended train; the information here was checked on 4 November 2026.
JR Central says Hikari and Kodama retain their usual non-reserved seating during those Nozomi all-reserved periods. If you plan to travel on Nozomi on a listed date, confirm seat availability before setting out rather than assuming you can travel without a reservation. JR Central’s general information says ordinary reserved express tickets normally go on sale at 10:00 one month before travel; Smart EX’s early-application process is separate and is explained below.
For another traveller’s perspective on buying Shinkansen tickets in Japanese, see NihongoDekita with Sayaka’s video about a Nagoya–Tokyo round trip. The video concerns a traveller’s experience; use the operator’s notice and booking information for current rules and availability.
Book with Smart EX and understand changes
Smart EX is a product for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Its fare combines the base fare and express-ticket components, and it supports ticketless travel using a registered transport IC card. A reservation can include one to six passengers, and child products are available; check the service conditions and the booking screen for the passenger details and product you need. (Smart EX service information)
Smart EX says reservations generally open at 05:30 on the same calendar date one year before travel. The number of seats available that far in advance is limited, and an early application does not mean every detail is confirmed immediately: for early reservations, the train number, time and seat number are confirmed from one month before travel. Read the confirmation and check the reservation again at the point the operator specifies. (Smart EX service information)
Booking is available around the clock except during maintenance, and purchase closes four minutes before the scheduled departure. Smart EX says payment takes place when the reservation is completed. These are useful timing conditions to bear in mind when planning a booking, but they do not guarantee that a particular seat or service will still be available at the time you apply. Check the details displayed for your own reservation before completing payment.
Before booking, enter the travel date and compare the train, departure and arrival times, passenger count, seat type and fare shown. If you have oversized baggage, first check whether your bag requires a seat with a designated oversized-baggage space. After booking, keep the reservation details and follow the operator’s instructions for your ticket method and boarding.
Changes, refunds and discounts
Smart EX says reservations can be changed repeatedly within its conditions before departure, provided you have not entered through the gate or collected the ticket. It lists a normal Smart EX refund fee of ¥320 before departure. Check the current product-specific terms before paying, especially if you have already entered through a gate, collected a ticket or missed the train; the information cited here does not establish every possible exception. (Smart EX service information)
Smart EX also says its product cannot be combined with other discounts. Compare the final price and conditions of products you are eligible to use instead of estimating a saving by stacking discounts. If your plans may change, consider the change and refund terms alongside the headline fare, and confirm which rules apply to the particular product you select.
For another account of a Tokyo-to-Nagoya rail journey, see Rion Ishida’s video. Treat traveller videos as personal perspectives rather than a substitute for checking Smart EX’s current booking and change conditions.
Check luggage rules before choosing a seat
Measure the sum of your bag’s three dimensions before travelling. JR Central says small or medium luggage measuring 160 cm or less in total may be placed at your feet or on the luggage rack. For oversized baggage measuring more than 160 cm in total, reserve a seat with the designated oversized-baggage space under the operator’s rules. (JR Central oversized-baggage information, checked 4 November 2026.)
| Total of the bag’s three dimensions | Published guidance | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| 160 cm or less | Small or medium baggage may be placed at your feet or on the luggage rack | Check that you can place it safely and manage it yourself |
| More than 160 cm | Oversized-baggage rules apply | Reserve a seat with the designated baggage space |
| Exactly 250 cm | JR Central’s descriptions use both “under 250 cm” and “within 250 cm” | Ask JR staff about this boundary before travelling |
| More than 250 cm | The item cannot be brought on board | Arrange another solution before your journey |
The exact 250 cm boundary needs particular care: JR Central’s page uses differing wording in its descriptions, so do not infer a rule for an item measuring exactly 250 cm. Ask JR staff about your bag’s measurements before travel. Items exceeding 250 cm in total cannot be brought aboard under the published guidance. (JR Central oversized-baggage information)
JR Central describes a trial of unreserved baggage space in part of the deck, but its guidance still says oversized baggage requires a designated-seat reservation even where information about that deck space appears. Do not treat the trial space as a substitute for the required seat reservation. Strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment also require the appropriate seat reservation if they use an oversized-baggage space, and travellers are responsible for managing their own luggage.
If you are unsure which category applies, contact JR with the bag’s three measurements before purchasing. Do not assume that a case will fit a particular space just because a similar-looking bag appears in a photograph. For further reading, see our [Shinkansen luggage guide] and [Shinkansen tickets guide]; the operator’s baggage page remains the place to check the stated rules.
A traveller’s video of a 2024 Tokyo-to-Nagoya journey is available from The Next Outing. As that video is a personal trip, check JR Central’s baggage information independently for the rules that apply to your own travel date.
Plan the whole journey, not only the Shinkansen leg
Compare the complete itinerary, including travel to Tokyo Station and any onward journey from Nagoya. Smart EX says connecting conventional-line fares are separate, and its product does not permit stopovers. Those conditions mean the Shinkansen fare alone may not represent the amount you need for a longer journey. (Smart EX service information)
For a planned departure, confirm the correct travel date, actual train times, passenger count, seat type and baggage arrangement. If you need to arrive by a particular time, account for your own connections and walking time rather than treating the Shinkansen leg as the entire journey. The official facts used here do not establish a guaranteed travel time, or the first or last train, for a particular date.
If you are considering a different way to travel, compare its complete itinerary and check the relevant operator’s current timetable and price. This guide does not provide verified current prices or schedules for buses, flights or other alternatives, so it would be misleading to rank them against the Smart EX fares above. Tanner’s video about travelling from Tokyo to Nagoya without the bullet train offers an alternative traveller perspective; check any route, fare and timetable with its operator before deciding.
For destination planning, see our [Nagoya travel guide]. If you intend to continue to Takayama, check the separate [Nagoya to Takayama route guide] as well. Each leg needs its own timetable and ticket check, and the Smart EX fare information for Tokyo–Nagoya does not establish the price or conditions of another leg.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagoya?
The referenced Smart EX fare table lists ¥11,100 for an adult travelling one way in an ordinary-car reserved seat on Nozomi during the regular season. It lists ¥10,890 for the same passenger and seat conditions on Hikari or Kodama. These are Smart EX product prices from a table dated 1 April 2025, not a universal station-counter price or a guaranteed fare for every season; confirm your date and product in the official fare comparison.
Is Nozomi always all reserved?
No. JR Central identifies specified busy periods when Nozomi services are all reserved, including 21–23 November 2026, 25 December 2026–5 January 2027, and 9–11 January 2027. The notice also says Hikari and Kodama retain their usual non-reserved seating during those periods, so check JR Central’s current Nozomi information for the dates that apply to your journey.
Can I travel ticketless?
Smart EX describes ticketless travel using a registered transport IC card. Check the current registration and boarding conditions for your booking before relying on this option. The service’s booking information is available on the Smart EX service page.
Does the Shinkansen fare cover travel on other lines?
Smart EX says connecting conventional-line fares are separate. Its product also does not permit a stopover, so check the full itinerary and its separate fare components if you are travelling beyond Tokyo or Nagoya. Use the Smart EX fare comparison for the products it presents, then confirm any other travel separately.
What should I do if my bag is oversized?
Measure the total of the bag’s three dimensions. JR Central says baggage exceeding 160 cm requires a seat with designated oversized-baggage space, while baggage exceeding 250 cm cannot be brought aboard. Because the published wording differs at exactly 250 cm, ask JR staff about that boundary; see the JR Central oversized-baggage guidance.
