Things to do in Shimane: castles, shrines and art

Shimane offers several very different kinds of visit: a historic castle keep in Matsue, a Japanese garden and art museum in Yasugi, and the shrine precinct of Izumo Taisha. Their admission systems, opening periods and visitor arrangements differ, so choosing a main destination before adding more stops makes planning easier. The information below was checked against the listed official sources on 4 November 2026; check the relevant operator page again for your travel date.

The three attractions are useful starting points for an eastern-Shimane itinerary, but they should not be treated as one ready-made route. The castle is in Matsue, the museum is in Yasugi, and the shrine is in Izumo, and the supplied attraction information does not establish travel times between all three. Add transport only after choosing the places you intend to visit, and allow for each facility’s own reception cutoff.

Compare three practical choices in Shimane

Start by deciding what kind of visit best suits your group. Matsue Castle’s paid keep has stairs and requires visitors to remove their shoes; the Adachi Museum of Art has several admission categories and separate notices for its annex; Izumo Taisha has a particular form of worship and a much longer general worship period than its wheelchair-loan reception period. Those differences can affect your day more than a simple list of attractions suggests.

Choose by interest and access needs
Destination Published adult admission Opening or worship period Practical distinction
Matsue Castle keep ¥1,200 April–September 8:30–18:00; October–March 8:30–17:00 Keep admission is separate from the free honmaru grounds; there is no lift inside the keep.
Adachi Museum of Art ¥2,500, tax included April–September 9:00–17:30; October–March 9:00–17:00 Admission varies by student category; annex closure notices do not necessarily mean the whole museum is closed.
Izumo Taisha front precinct Check the intended visit type with the shrine Generally about 6:00–19:00 for worship General worship is different from visiting the treasury or making arrangements for individual prayer.

For Matsue Castle, the adult keep fee is ¥1,200, and elementary- and junior-high-school students enter free. The free honmaru—the castle’s main enclosure—has its own opening hours, so being able to enter the grounds does not mean the keep is still accepting visitors. For the museum, use the actual ticket category for each person rather than assuming everyone pays the adult rate. The current castle and museum details are on the Matsue Castle visitor information page and the Adachi Museum hours and admission page.

Izumo Taisha’s published general worship period is not a universal opening time for every building or service. The tourism association’s overview does not confirm the treasury’s admission fee or the arrangements for individual prayer, so check with the relevant official contact if either is part of your plan. Its Izumo Taisha visitor information also provides the local access overview.

Visit Matsue Castle: distinguish the keep from the grounds

Matsue Castle changed its keep admission price on 1 July 2026. The current adult fee is ¥1,200, while elementary- and junior-high-school students enter free; the listed rate for adult groups of 30 or more is ¥960 per adult. Older information showing an adult fee of ¥800 should not be used for a visit planned from the current price list. Check the official visitor page before setting your budget, particularly if your group may qualify for the stated group rate.

The keep opens from 8:30 to 18:00 in April–September, with reception ending at 17:30. From October through March, it opens from 8:30 to 17:00, with reception ending at 16:30. Matsue Castle is listed as open year-round, but events can change the hours, so use the current visitor notice rather than assuming the seasonal schedule is guaranteed on a particular date.

The honmaru is free to enter and follows a different schedule from the keep. Its hours are 8:00–18:30 from April through September and 8:00–17:30 from October through March. If you arrive after keep reception has ended, the grounds and the interior keep are not interchangeable options: decide whether a grounds visit is sufficient or whether entering the keep is essential to your plan.

Visitors remove their shoes before entering the keep and put them in a shoe bag. There is no lift or toilet inside, and the castle FAQ says that the keep cannot be toured in a wheelchair. These conditions matter when deciding whether everyone in a group can take the same part of the visit; the Matsue Castle FAQ explains the keep’s limitations.

Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the tourist information office and at Kounkaku: the listed quantities are two at the information office and one at Kounkaku, and reservations are possible. The tourist information office also has a small nursing room. These are useful arrangements for a visit to the area, but borrowing a wheelchair does not remove the keep’s internal access restrictions.

A carousel by Sneakerkenji0117 shows Matsue’s Suigosai fireworks setting at Lake Shinji. It offers a view of the city beyond the castle interior, but it is not an event schedule; use current event announcements if you are considering a future festival visit. Treat the castle and the lake setting as separate planning choices unless you have confirmed the timing and transport that work for your date.

Plan an Adachi Museum of Art visit

The Adachi Museum of Art is at 320 Furukawacho, Yasugi, Shimane, and its telephone number is 0854-28-7111. Save the museum’s map location or use the written address when arranging your approach. The museum’s official visitor page is the place to confirm admission and operating notices, rather than relying on a general description of the area.

Adachi Museum · adult ¥2,500→Oct–Mar 9:00–17:00→Annex closure · 16–17 Nov 2026
Check which part of the museum is affected

Admission is ¥2,500 for adults, ¥2,000 for university students, ¥1,000 for high-school students and ¥500 for elementary- and junior-high-school students. The museum lists these prices as tax-inclusive. A family or mixed-age group should calculate the total using each visitor’s category; applying the adult price to everyone would overstate the published admission cost.

The museum is open 9:00–17:30 in April–September and 9:00–17:00 in October–March. It normally opens year-round, but the annex can close during exhibition changes. The published closure on 16 and 17 November 2026 applies to the annex, not to the whole museum, so distinguish the affected building from the overall facility when checking a date. The museum’s current hours, admission and notices are the official reference.

Drivers can use the museum’s free parking, listed for 400 cars and 30 buses. The museum also lists seven loan wheelchairs and three strollers, with no reservations available for these items. That arrangement is different from Matsue Castle’s reservable wheelchair loans, so do not assume that a reservation rule or quantity published by one facility applies at the other.

Groups of 20 or more should use the museum’s group application form. This threshold is separate from Matsue Castle’s listed adult group rate, which applies to groups of 30 or more. Check the relevant facility’s procedure for your group rather than treating “group admission” as one shared rule across Shimane attractions.

A retrospective Shimane carousel by Yasuda Misako includes Inasa Beach and Izumo Taisha. It gives a visual contrast between coastal and shrine scenery and an indoor art visit, but it does not provide current transport or opening information for those other places. Use it as inspiration for choosing a different kind of stop, then check that destination’s own visitor information.

Worship at Izumo Taisha

Izumo Taisha is at 195 Taishacho Kizukihigashi, Izumo, Shimane, and its telephone number is 0853-53-3100. You can save the map location alongside the written address. For visit-specific questions, use the Izumo Tourism Association’s visitor information, which gives the local overview and access guidance.

Izumoshi Station · bus about 25 min→Dentetsu-Izumoshi via Kawato · about 25 min→Wheelchair reception 8:30–16:30
Separate shrine access from wheelchair-loan reception

The association describes the front precinct as generally open for worship from about 6:00 to 19:00. It introduces the worship form as two bows, four claps and one bow. Follow the instructions provided at the shrine for the area you are visiting rather than automatically applying a pattern you have learned at another shrine.

The association gives an approximate bus journey of 25 minutes from Izumoshi Station. It also describes a rail approach from Dentetsu-Izumoshi on the Ichibata Railway, changing at Kawato for Izumo Taisha-mae, at about 25 minutes. These are route estimates, not a guarantee of a particular departure or connection; check actual services for your travel date and allow for the remaining approach to the shrine.

Wheelchair-loan reception is listed as 8:30–16:30, shorter than the general worship period. If you require a loan wheelchair, plan around that reception time and confirm the arrangements before relying on the service. A visit later in the day may still fall within the general worship period but not within the listed reception window.

The available overview does not confirm the treasury admission fee or the booking conditions for individual prayer. If either is important to your visit, contact the shrine through the official information rather than assuming that the general front-precinct guidance covers it. A Japanese-language post by Showchannel_ntv presents Izumo Taisha as part of a field-trip-style programme about the shrine, while Brunch_tbs introduces an Izumo outing featuring the shrine and surrounding places; these are visual context, not substitutes for official visitor arrangements.

Expand your Shimane trip carefully

JNTO introduces Iwami Ginzan as a World Heritage site and names Iwami Kagura, Tsuwano and Masuda among Shimane’s attractions. These are useful starting points for choosing another area, but a prefectural overview does not establish a specific performance date, site opening, transport connection or booking condition. Check the individual destination or event information before making one of them part of a fixed itinerary. The JNTO Shimane guide provides the broader prefectural introduction.

Castle ¥1,200→Museum ¥2,500→Admission subtotal ¥3,700→Transport, meals and stay separately
Price admissions first, then add the real route
Matsue Castle · loans reservable, keep inaccessible→Adachi Museum · loans not reservable→Izumo Taisha · reception 8:30–16:30
Ask the operator of the place you will actually enter

A reel by Japan Experience follows a walk through Tsuwano and offers a visual reason to consider a separate western-Shimane outing. It does not show that Tsuwano can be added conveniently to a Matsue visit, and the supplied attraction information does not confirm the transport or time required for that journey. Treat it as a possible separate destination until you have checked the route and the time available.

A simple admission subtotal can help compare the main eastern-Shimane choices, but it is not a full trip budget. One adult visiting the Matsue Castle keep and the Adachi Museum pays a combined published admission total of ¥3,700: ¥1,200 plus ¥2,500. This excludes local and long-distance transport, meals, accommodation, other tickets and any booked service.

For two adults and one elementary- or junior-high-school student, the same two attractions have a combined admission subtotal of ¥7,900. At the castle, the two adults pay ¥2,400 in total and the student enters free; at the museum, the two adults pay ¥5,000 and the student pays ¥500. This calculation uses the published prices checked on 4 November 2026 and excludes all transport and other trip expenses.

Use a short planning sequence to avoid mixing up facility rules. First, open the castle visitor page and note the seasonal keep reception cutoff as well as the honmaru hours. Next, check the museum admission page for the applicable ticket categories and any annex notice for your date. Then use the Izumo visitor page to check the shrine approach and any mobility support you need.

Once you have chosen actual destinations, place them on a map and check transport between them for your travel date. Compare the time available with the return journey before adding a western-Shimane destination; the supplied attraction information does not establish a prefecture-wide itinerary length, accommodation total or single-day route. For broader regional choices, use the JNTO guide to select an area, then confirm practical details with the relevant attraction or event operator.

Useful questions about Shimane visits

Honmaru · free→Keep · adult ¥1,200→Remove shoes→No lift or toilet inside
The grounds and keep have different conditions

Is Matsue Castle’s honmaru free?

Yes. The honmaru is free to enter, while the keep has separate admission and reception times. The grounds open from 8:00 to 18:30 in April–September and from 8:00 to 17:30 in October–March, whereas keep reception ends at 17:30 in the warmer period and 16:30 in the colder period. Check the castle visitor page to decide which hours apply to the part you want to visit.

Can I tour Matsue Castle’s keep in a wheelchair?

No. The castle FAQ says that the keep cannot be toured in a wheelchair, and there is no lift inside. Wheelchairs are available to borrow at the tourist information office and Kounkaku, with reservations possible, but those loans do not change the keep’s internal access conditions. Read the castle FAQ before deciding how your group will use the site.

Does the Adachi Museum close completely when the annex is shut?

The published notice for 16 and 17 November 2026 concerns the annex during an exhibition change, not the whole museum. The museum’s usual seasonal opening periods are 9:00–17:30 from April through September and 9:00–17:00 from October through March. Check the museum’s current visitor information for your date and distinguish an annex notice from a full-facility closure.

What is the worship form introduced for Izumo Taisha?

The tourism association introduces the form as two bows, four claps and one bow. Follow the instructions given at the shrine for the worship area you visit, rather than assuming that every shrine uses the same pattern. The association’s Izumo Taisha information gives the local visitor overview.

Is ¥3,700 the full cost for one adult to visit the castle and museum?

No. It is the combined admission subtotal for one adult entering the Matsue Castle keep and the Adachi Museum: ¥1,200 plus ¥2,500. It excludes transport, food, accommodation, additional tickets and any booked service. Check the castle fee information and museum admission information for the published charges.

How should I choose another place in Shimane?

Use the JNTO guide to consider the broader choices it introduces, including Iwami Ginzan, Iwami Kagura, Tsuwano and Masuda. Then check the specific site, performance or transport information before treating it as a confirmed part of your trip. The guide is a starting point for selecting an area, not a booking confirmation or a complete route plan.
