Sounkyo Onsen Travel Guide: Buses, Kurodake and Seasons

Sounkyo Onsen is a hot-spring village inside Daisetsuzan National Park, surrounded by a gorge, waterfalls and mountain access. You can visit for the day or stay overnight, but the bus return time and the seasonal operating schedule for the Kurodake Ropeway are key planning constraints. Check both before deciding what to fit into your visit.

The transport and facility details in this guide were checked on November 3, 2026. Timetables, fares and operating plans can change, so confirm the official notices for your travel date before setting out. The area is reached by road from Kamikawa or Asahikawa; there is no railway from Kamikawa Station to Sounkyo.

Choose a day trip or an overnight stay

A day trip can work if you plan around a specific bus pair, but it leaves limited room for unexpected timetable changes or a longer mountain visit. Staying overnight gives you more flexibility to enjoy the hot springs and to check current mountain conditions without having to fit everything between two bus departures. The right choice depends less on a fixed sightseeing checklist than on how much time you want to spend in the gorge and at Kurodake.

Option Published cost and time Practical points
Asahikawa Station to Sounkyo by Dohoku Bus Web one-way ticket: adult ¥2,140; child ¥1,070. The tourism association estimates about 110 minutes. Direct road-bus option; check a suitable return departure before travelling.
Kamikawa Station to Sounkyo by bus Web one-way ticket: adult ¥890; child ¥450. The tourism association estimates about 35 minutes. The train to Kamikawa is separate, and there is no railway for the final leg to Sounkyo.
Kurodake Ropeway Adult ¥3,000 return; elementary-school child ¥1,500 return. About seven minutes each way; check operating dates and maintenance notices.
Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls Free to view. Listed as open year-round; check conditions before climbing to the viewpoint.

The bus fares above are the published web-ticket prices for June 8, 2026–June 30, 2027. The ticket site identifies adults as passengers of middle-school age and above, and the tourism association says the Sounkyo-section web ticket can be bought without membership registration or downloading an app. These figures do not give the full cost of travelling via Kamikawa, because a separate rail ticket is needed and its fare is not included in the bus price. Check the Dohoku Bus web-ticket site and the association’s access guide for your travel date.

For an overnight visit, compare the accommodation’s location, bathing facilities, meal arrangements and transport details before booking. The tourism association lists large hotels as well as smaller options, including a hostel and guesthouse-style accommodation. Do not assume that a property’s transport arrangements or meal conditions are the same as those of another property; check the terms with your chosen accommodation.

Getting to Sounkyo and planning the bus return

The tourism association gives several ways to reach the area: car, bus, JR and air travel. For visitors arriving by train, it estimates about 45 minutes by limited express from Asahikawa Station to Kamikawa Station, followed by about 35 minutes by bus from Kamikawa to Sounkyo. There is no railway between Kamikawa and Sounkyo, so the final section requires a bus or taxi; the train fare and connection time are separate considerations.

Compare the complete connection
Choose outward bus→Check village arrival→Choose return bus→Check destination
Save both directions before building the day
Asahikawa→Sounkyo→Check return destination→Asahikawa
A late departure is useful only if it reaches your destination

The bus directly from Asahikawa avoids the train-to-bus transfer at Kamikawa. The association estimates the Asahikawa–Sounkyo bus ride at about 110 minutes, while the checked all-days timetable lists an Asahikawa Station departure at 06:55 arriving in Sounkyo at 08:54. It also lists a departure at 18:25 arriving at 20:24; these are timetable examples checked on November 3, 2026, not guarantees for later dates. Consult the outbound Dohoku Bus timetable for the date you intend to travel.

For a car-free day trip, the checked timetable provides one possible pair of schedule anchors: the 06:55 bus from Asahikawa arrives at 08:54, and a 17:00 bus leaves Sounkyo for Asahikawa Station, arriving at 18:55. That creates a scheduled interval of 8 hours 6 minutes in Sounkyo before the return departure. It does not confirm that every activity, meal or bath will fit into that interval, so check each facility’s current hours and allow time to return to the bus stop.

The return timetable also lists a Sounkyo departure at 06:20, arriving at Asahikawa Station at 08:15. It lists the 17:00 departure to Asahikawa Station, arriving at 18:55, and an 18:55 departure from Sounkyo that does not show a through arrival time at Asahikawa Station. Check the destination shown for that later bus instead of assuming it is a direct service to Asahikawa. The return timetable and the association’s access information are the relevant checks before relying on a particular connection.

A practical planning sequence is to choose your return destination first, then select an outbound bus that gives you enough time in the village. If travelling via Kamikawa, check the rail and bus schedules as separate legs and leave time for the connection; the bus ticket alone does not include the train. Finally, confirm the operating day and current timetable with the operator or tourism association, since the association advises that bus times may change.

By car, the tourism association’s route information gives Sapporo–Sounkyo as 205 km via the Hokkaido Expressway, the Asahikawa-Monbetsu Expressway, Kamikawa-Sounkyo Interchange and National Route 39. It lists Asahikawa–Sounkyo as 66 km via National Route 39 and Kamikawa–Sounkyo as 25 km on the same road. The association also lists Kitami–Sounkyo as 90 km via National Route 39; check current road conditions and route details before driving.

Kurodake Ropeway and lift: what each gets you

The Kurodake Ropeway connects Sounkyo Station at an elevation of 670 metres with Kurodake Station at 1,300 metres in about seven minutes. The operator says it normally runs every 20 minutes, with the 12:20 departure suspended. On the schedule checked November 3, 2026, the individual return fare was ¥3,000 for adults and ¥1,500 for elementary-school children; adults are defined as middle-school age and above, and preschool children ride free. Check the operator’s current Kurodake notice before purchase, particularly because the operator says fares will change from June 1, 2027.

Sounkyo 670 m→Ropeway→Kurodake 1,300 m→Lift→Seventh station 1,520 m
A ropeway trip and a mountain route are different plans

The ropeway and the Kurodake lift are separate parts of the mountain journey. The lift runs from the fifth-station side to the seventh station at 1,520 metres, so taking the ropeway does not mean you have completed a hike or reached every mountain destination. Decide what you intend to do after the ropeway and check the current operating conditions and route information before setting out.

The operator’s schedule checked November 3, 2026 lists a ropeway maintenance closure from November 9–30, 2026. For December 1–31, 2026, it lists operating hours of 08:00–16:00, with the final ascent 40 minutes before closing. The 2026 summer lift season ended on October 15, and the lift was listed as closed for maintenance from October 16–November 30; these are dated plans, so consult the current notice for a later visit.

The operator lists the 2026–2027 Kurodake ski season as planned for December 1, 2026–May 5, 2027, with operating hours of 09:00–15:20. In winter, the lift is limited to people carrying skiing, snowboarding or similar sliding equipment, and passengers cannot ride down on it. Do not assume that the winter lift works like the summer sightseeing lift; check the operator’s current rules before making plans around it.

Where to stay and what to compare

Sounkyo has a cluster of hot-spring accommodation, with options ranging from larger hotels to smaller properties. The tourism association’s accommodation list includes Sounkaku Mountain Resort 1923, Hotel Taisetsu, Sounkyo Kanko Hotel and Sounkyo Choyotei, as well as Minshuku Todate, Sounkyo Hostel and Onsen Pension Ginga. Use the association’s accommodation directory to review listed properties, then confirm room, meal and transport details with the property before booking.

Hotel Taisetsu and Sounkyo Choyotei are described as being on higher ground in the hot-spring village. The association lists three large baths and two open-air baths at Hotel Taisetsu, while Choyotei has a large bath on its top floor. Those details can help narrow down accommodation if bathing facilities are a priority, but check the property’s own current information for access, room arrangements and booking conditions.

Kurodake no Yu is a day-use bathing facility, not an overnight property. It has an open-air bath overlooking the gorge, according to the town’s facility information. If you plan to stay overnight, compare it separately from hotels and guesthouses: its admission and opening information concern a bath visit, not a room reservation.

Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls and the Visitor Center

Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls lie beside the Ishikari River, along a gorge where cliffs extend for about 24 kilometres. The tourism association describes the falls as selected among Japan’s 100 best waterfalls and lists free viewing throughout the year, with a free parking area for 150 vehicles. The falls are a straightforward option to consider alongside a village visit, but year-round viewing does not mean every path or viewpoint is necessarily suitable in all conditions.

Hotel Taisetsu; Choyotei; other listed lodgings; day bath
Kurodake no Yu does not provide overnight accommodation
Separate choices: visitor center; waterfalls; village bath. Confirm each connection and the return bus.
Check conditions before choosing a route

From the waterfalls, a climb of about 20 minutes up the slope leads to Sobakudai, a viewpoint where both falls can be seen together. Treat this as a separate uphill walk rather than assuming the viewpoint is as accessible as the main viewing area. Check local conditions before climbing, especially if you have a bus departure to meet or are visiting when conditions may affect the route. See the tourism association’s waterfall information for its current visitor guidance.

The Sounkyo Visitor Center provides information about Kurodake, Akadake, nature experiences, hiking routes and local sightseeing. The Ministry of the Environment lists opening hours as 08:00–17:30 from June through October and 09:00–17:00 from November through May. From November through May, it lists Monday closures, with the closure shifted to the following day when Monday is a holiday; the center is also listed as closed December 31–January 5. Check the Ministry’s Daisetsuzan National Park information before making the center part of a short itinerary.

For a brief visit, the center can help you check which local information is relevant to your available time and planned route. Keep its seasonal hours and your return bus in view rather than adding a stop without checking the clock. Ask about current path and mountain conditions instead of assuming that a route is open or suitable throughout the year.

Hot springs, Kurodake no Yu and winter

Sounkyo’s hot-spring accommodation makes an overnight stay an option for travellers who want to bathe as part of their visit. Kurodake no Yu is the separate day-use facility, with an open-air bath overlooking the gorge. The town’s facility page gives its contact number as 01658-5-3333 and notes that maintenance can cause closures; contact the facility before making a special trip.

Bus schedule→Ropeway maintenance→Bath hours→Festival dates
Check dates before building the itinerary

Published information for Kurodake no Yu does not agree on either admission price or hours, so treat the figures as unconfirmed rather than choosing one as definitively current. The facility detail page lists admission as ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children, and gives ordinary hours of 10:00–22:00 from May 1–October 31, with final admission at 21:30; from November 1–April 30, it lists 11:00–21:30, with final admission at 21:00. It lists shorter year-end and New Year hours of 11:00–18:00, with final admission at 17:30, from December 31–January 3, and shows a last update of November 18, 2024.

A separate town day-bath listing gives different information: adult admission of ¥600 and child admission of ¥300, with reception from 10:00–21:00 and closing at 21:30. That listing shows a last update of April 4, 2025, and says the shorter year-end schedule covers December 31 and January 1, rather than the four dates in the facility detail page. The current price, hours and applicable year-end dates have not been confirmed, so call 01658-5-3333 or check the facility detail and town day-bath listing before budgeting or setting out.

The tourism association lists the 52nd Sounkyo Onsen Ice Fall Festival for January 23–March 7, 2027. The checked page had not confirmed that edition’s opening hours or cooperation fee, so do not use the ¥1,000 fee or hours shown for the completed 2026, 51st festival as the 2027 price or schedule. The event guidance recommends warm clothing and footwear with slip-resistant soles; check the current festival page for updates before travelling.

Winter planning also needs to account for the dated Kurodake operating information, not just the festival dates. The ropeway’s listed December 2026 hours are 08:00–16:00, while the winter lift is restricted to people carrying sliding equipment and cannot be used for the downhill ride. Check the operator’s current notices and the bus timetable together so that a mountain visit does not conflict with your return transport.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train from Kamikawa Station to Sounkyo?

No. The tourism association says there is no railway between Kamikawa and Sounkyo, and directs visitors to use a bus or taxi for that section. If travelling by train from Asahikawa, treat the train to Kamikawa and the onward road journey as separate legs when checking times and costs.

How much is the bus from Asahikawa to Sounkyo?

For the published web-ticket period of June 8, 2026–June 30, 2027, the listed one-way fare from Asahikawa Station to Sounkyo is ¥2,140 for adults and ¥1,070 for children. The ticket site identifies adults as middle-school age and above; check the ticket details for your travel date before buying. The listed Kamikawa–Sounkyo bus fare is lower, but it does not include the separate train fare to Kamikawa.

Can I visit Sounkyo as a day trip from Asahikawa?

A day trip is possible to plan around the listed bus services, but the return departure sets a firm limit on time in the village. In the timetable checked November 3, 2026, the 06:55 bus from Asahikawa reaches Sounkyo at 08:54, and the 17:00 return reaches Asahikawa at 18:55. Check the current timetable and the opening hours of any facility you want to visit; the schedule alone does not establish that a particular combination of activities will fit.

Is the Kurodake Ropeway open throughout the year?

No year-round operating assumption is safe: the operator publishes seasonal schedules and maintenance closures. The schedule checked November 3, 2026 listed maintenance from November 9–30, 2026, and December 2026 operating hours of 08:00–16:00. Confirm the operator’s notice for your date, especially if travelling outside the listed period or after the announced fare change from June 1, 2027.

Are the Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls free to visit?

The tourism association lists both waterfalls as free to view year-round and provides information about a free parking area for 150 vehicles. The climb to Sobakudai takes about 20 minutes up the slope and offers a view of both falls together. Check local route conditions before making the climb, and allow enough time to return for your transport.

What should I check before visiting Kurodake no Yu?

Check the current price and hours directly, because the town’s facility detail page and its separate day-bath listing show conflicting admission fees, operating hours and year-end dates. The facility detail page lists ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children, while the town listing gives ¥600 and ¥300; neither should be treated as confirmed current pricing without checking. The published facility contact number is 01658-5-3333, and maintenance closures are possible.

Before travelling, confirm the current bus schedule, ropeway operation and any facility information that affects your plan. The official links above provide the relevant timetable, ticket, mountain, bathing and event notices; their dated details should be checked again for your actual visit.
