Shiki-shima Train Japan: 2027 Rooms, Prices and Application Dates
Contents
TRAIN SUITE SHIKI-SHIMA is sold as a travel product, not as an ordinary train seat bought through a regular ticket release. For the July–September 2027 departures, JR East announced an application period from 9 October 2026 at 10:00 to 14 December 2026 at 18:00. If applications exceed the available places, allocation is by lottery; results are expected to be sent around late January 2027. These are application and allocation dates, not a guarantee of a place.
Before applying, match the course, room category and room occupancy to the published price. For example, the one-night Suite price of ¥500,000 is per person when two guests share, not the total room price and not the solo-use price. Read the dated JR East announcement for the course you want, and check its conditions before arranging other travel. The details below were checked on 5 November 2026.
JR East’s official video introduces the train and provides a visual overview. It is useful for getting a sense of the product, but the dated announcement is the source to rely on for the current summer 2027 application period, routes and prices.
Summer 2027 courses: routes and departures
JR East’s July–September 2027 announcement lists two kinds of trip: a one-night, two-day course and a three-night, four-day course. Both depart from Ueno, but the announced route areas and trip lengths differ. JR East notes that itineraries and sightseeing details may change, so treat these as published course outlines rather than fixed, station-by-station schedules. Read the summer 2027 announcement.
| Summer 2027 course | Departure context | Published route outline |
|---|---|---|
| One night, two days | Departs from Ueno | Matsumoto and the Sanjo/Tsubame area |
| Three nights, four days | Departs from Ueno | Fukushima, Hakodate and southern Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Niigata areas |
The shorter trip may suit someone looking for a two-day itinerary, while the longer course covers more nights and a wider set of regions. That comparison is about the announced trip length and route outline, not a promise about the pace, exact stops or sightseeing arrangements on a particular departure. Read the relevant course information before selecting dates, especially if you need to coordinate the train with travel before or after the journey.
The 21 August 2027 departure is identified as eligible for priority applications by JRE POINT members who have held Premium status for at least two consecutive periods. This condition applies to that named priority arrangement; it is not stated as a general membership requirement for every course. Priority eligibility also does not guarantee a place, so check the dated announcement and application information for the conditions that apply to the departure you are considering.
Jeb Brooks’s overnight SHIKI-SHIMA video offers a traveller’s perspective on a journey aboard the train. It can help illustrate an individual trip, but it does not confirm availability, route details or prices for the summer 2027 departures. Use the JR East announcement for those current offer details.
Published summer 2027 prices
The prices below are per person. Room category, course length and occupancy all affect the amount, so compare like with like. In particular, the two-person Suite rate is not a total-room price: multiply it by two to understand the published per-person basis for two guests sharing.
| July–September 2027 course | Room | Occupancy basis | Published price per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| One night, two days | Suite | Two guests sharing | ¥500,000 |
| One night, two days | Suite | One guest using the room | ¥900,000 |
| One night, two days | Deluxe Suite | Two guests sharing | ¥700,000 |
| One night, two days | Shiki-shima Suite | Two guests sharing | ¥750,000 |
| Three nights, four days | Suite | Two guests sharing | ¥1,100,000 |
| Three nights, four days | Deluxe Suite | Two guests sharing | ¥1,450,000 |
| Three nights, four days | Shiki-shima Suite | Two guests sharing | ¥1,500,000 |
These are the amounts in JR East’s summer 2027 announcement, checked on 5 November 2026. The table does not establish that a room is available, provide a private quotation or state the complete inclusions for a particular departure. Before applying or accepting an allocation, confirm the applicable conditions with the official organizer, including the full details of the departure and the payment and cancellation terms.
The table shows a large difference between one guest using a Suite and two guests sharing one. It also shows that the published two-person prices vary by room category and course length. A lower per-person amount should therefore not be read as a like-for-like bargain unless the trip duration, room and sharing basis are also the same.
Do not treat dollar figures in a creator’s video title as the current official yen fare. A video may refer to another season, room type, occupancy basis or exchange rate. Solo Solo Travel presents a two-day journey, and Luxury POV shows an upper-room experience; these are useful visual references, but JR East’s dated price table is the appropriate comparison for the application period described here.
Rooms and shared spaces aboard the train
JR East describes TRAIN SUITE SHIKI-SHIMA as a ten-car train with capacity for 34 passengers. Each guest room is for two people, and the official FAQ lists 15 Suites of about nine square metres, one Deluxe Suite of about 14 square metres and one two-level Shiki-shima Suite of about 20 square metres. The categories differ in size and layout, so check which room category is attached to the price and departure you select. See JR East’s official FAQ.
Each guest room has a shower, washbasin and washlet-style toilet. Rooms do not have televisions, which may matter if a television is an expected part of your accommodation. The FAQ identifies a universal room in car 4; accessibility limitations for the rest of the train are described in the following section.
The train guide places the lounge in car 5, the dining area in car 6 and observation spaces in cars 1 and 10. It also says the lounge is unavailable from 00:00 to 05:00 for cleaning and related work. These are shared facilities, not extensions of the private room, so consider their locations and availability alongside the cabin description. Check JR East’s train guide.
Two upper rooms in car 7 have hinoki baths, and the upper level of the Shiki-shima Suite has tatami flooring. Those details are specific to the named rooms and should not be assumed to apply to every Suite. If a particular bath, floor layout or room feature is essential to your choice, confirm the room category rather than relying on a general description of the train.
TravelBlonde’s four-day SHIKI-SHIMA account can help readers picture an individual longer journey. It is a traveller’s experience, not confirmation that an application for a future course will be successful or that a particular itinerary will be unchanged. Use the operator’s information to check the actual course and room terms.
Access needs and participation
The official FAQ says passengers must be junior-high-school age or older at departure, and pets are not accepted. It also identifies one universal room in car 4. These rules are important to check before applying, particularly if a member of your party is close to the age threshold or you are planning to travel with an animal. Review the official FAQ.
The wheelchair-accessible range described by JR East is limited: it extends from the area by the universal room in car 4 through car 5 and to before the central stairs in car 6. The observation rooms are not wheelchair accessible. A universal-room label therefore does not mean that every car, shared facility or part of the train can be reached by wheelchair.
Discuss your party’s specific needs with the official organizer before choosing a room or relying on an arrangement. Ask about the parts of the journey that matter to you, including boarding, assistance, dining and the proposed off-train sightseeing. The published access description alone cannot establish whether a particular set of arrangements will meet an individual passenger’s needs.
The facts cited here do not establish individual foreign-language support, halal arrangements or every possible allergy accommodation. Do not infer that a service is available from a luxury-travel description or from the existence of English-language information. Contact the organizer with the details of your request and obtain an answer for your party before you apply.
The Prime Minister’s Office of Japan has also presented a video about SHIKI-SHIMA and Tohoku. It gives broader official visual context, but it does not set current booking conditions or confirm the details of a 2027 departure. For travel planning, distinguish background material from the application information and the organizer’s answer to an individual access question.
Applications, winter offers and practical checks
Use the official SHIKI-SHIMA site and the dated summer 2027 announcement to check the active offer. JR East’s stated application period runs from 9 October 2026 at 10:00 until 14 December 2026 at 18:00. If applications exceed availability, allocation is by lottery, with results expected around late January 2027; submitting an application is not the same as receiving a confirmed place.
A practical sequence is to choose the course first, then the room and the number of people sharing. Check that the price you are comparing is for the same trip length, room category and occupancy. Before submitting, raise any access, food or language questions with the organizer rather than assuming that a need can be accommodated.
After applying, keep a record of the details you submitted and watch for the allocation result. If you receive an allocation, follow the organizer’s instructions for the next steps and confirmation. The facts available here do not establish a universal payment deadline, cancellation rule or guaranteed outcome, so check the terms that apply to your allocated departure rather than relying on a general estimate.
The passenger lounge PROLOGUE SHIKI-SHIMA is at Ueno Station, according to the official FAQ. Use the final joining instructions for the applicable meeting point and time; this guide does not establish a universal airport connection, a required station-arrival time or a standard connection from any particular airport. Check those details before booking surrounding transport or accommodation.
The December 2026–March 2027 winter offer is separate from the summer 2027 offer. It lists two-night, three-day and one-night, two-day courses; its one-night Suite prices are ¥470,000 per person for two sharing and ¥700,000 per person for one guest using the room. The initial application period for that winter offer ended on 1 June 2026, so those prices should not be substituted for the summer table or treated as proof of current availability. See the winter announcement.
The winter announcement names areas including Mizusawa, Kitakami, Goshogawara, Hirosaki and Shiogama for the longer course, and Mashiko, Kobuchizawa and Hakushu for the shorter one. Those route names describe the separate winter offer, not the summer courses. The old application notice does not establish whether a place remains or whether additional recruitment will take place, so ask the official organizer about any current availability.
For the rest of a Japan trip, JGO!’s Japan cash or card guide can help with broader payment preparation, while its Japan budget travel guide and Japan bus guide provide general travel context. SHIKI-SHIMA remains a separately sold travel product with its own application and payment conditions. Use those other guides for general planning, not as substitutes for the train’s current official terms.
Frequently asked questions
Is the ¥500,000 summer amount the total price of the room?
No. The ¥500,000 figure is the published one-night Suite amount per person when two guests share. The same room and course has a separately listed solo-use amount of ¥900,000 per person. Check both the occupancy basis and room category whenever you compare prices.
Does submitting an application secure a place?
No. JR East says applications are allocated by lottery if demand exceeds availability. Results are expected around late January 2027, but an application itself is not a confirmed booking. Wait for the allocation result and then follow the organizer’s instructions for any next steps.
Can every passenger use the observation rooms by wheelchair?
No. The official FAQ says the observation rooms are not wheelchair accessible and describes a limited accessible range around the universal room in car 4. The accessible range is described through car 5 to before the central stairs in car 6. Discuss the whole journey and your party’s specific requirements with the organizer.
Can I use a winter price for summer 2027?
No. The winter and summer offers are separate, and their prices, courses and application periods should be kept distinct. The winter one-night Suite price is ¥470,000 per person for two sharing, while the summer one-night Suite price is ¥500,000 per person for two sharing. The winter offer’s initial application period has ended, so its price does not indicate summer availability or winter availability now.
Where do passengers meet at Ueno Station?
JR East’s FAQ identifies a passenger lounge called PROLOGUE SHIKI-SHIMA at Ueno Station. Use the joining instructions for your own departure to confirm the meeting point and time. Do not assume that this guide establishes an airport connection or a universal arrival deadline.
Are pets accepted, and who can travel?
The official FAQ says pets are not accepted. It also says participants must be junior-high-school age or older at departure. Check the FAQ and ask the organizer if your circumstances require clarification before you apply.
