Sanyo San'in Rail Pass: Routes, Prices and Reservations

The Sanyo San’in Area Pass covers eligible JR West journeys for seven consecutive days. Its listed coverage includes reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, eligible JR West trains in the pass area, the JR Miyajima Ferry and eligible West Japan JR Bus local routes. The listed price recorded on 4 November 2026 is ¥23,000 for an adult and ¥11,500 for a child; check the official purchase information for the price and conditions that apply when you buy.

A pass is not automatically cheaper than individual tickets. First identify the exact trains and other services on your itinerary, then compare the cost of those journeys with the pass price and any separate fares or charges. In particular, do not assume that the pass covers the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Kyushu Shinkansen south of Hakata, highway buses or every service operated in the region.

1. Price and eligibility

JR West lists the following prices and age categories for the pass:

Tokyo — separate ticket→Shin-Osaka→Hakata — separate ticket→Kagoshima-Chuo
The Sanyo section is covered; the adjoining Shinkansen routes are not.
Traveller Listed price Age category Validity
Adult ¥23,000 12 or older Seven consecutive days
Child ¥11,500 6–11 Seven consecutive days

These prices are the official listing recorded on 4 November 2026, not a guarantee of the price displayed on a later purchase date. JR West’s product page states an information basis date of 1 August 2024; that date is not evidence of when the price last changed. Check the official Sanyo San’in Area Pass page before making a purchase, and use the price and conditions shown for your transaction.

The pass is valid for seven consecutive days, from 00:00 on its first day until 24:00 on its final day. These are consecutive calendar days, not seven separate days that you can choose independently. When selecting a start date, consider whether you will use the pass for eligible journeys on each day of the period; unused days within the validity period do not extend it.

JR West’s common conditions list the pass for short-term visitors travelling with non-Japanese passports. Japanese nationals are not eligible, even if they have permanent residence abroad. The JR West common terms and conditions provide the eligibility conditions; carry your passport while travelling and show it to staff if requested.

2. Covered routes and exclusions

The pass covers eligible JR West services within its stated area, but coverage depends on the specific train, route and service type. The main included services are reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, eligible limited-express reserved seats such as Haruka, and eligible JR West Special Rapid, Rapid and local trains. It also covers the JR Miyajima Ferry and eligible West Japan JR Bus local routes.

Pass→Reserved JR leg→Ferry or eligible local bus→Excluded transport→Total
Add excluded segments to the pass price.
Collect pass→Reserve seat→Check platform→Board→Keep passport
Carry the required documents throughout your trip.
Service or journey Pass coverage Practical check
Sanyo Shinkansen, Shin-Osaka–Hakata Reserved seats covered Reserve the required seat before boarding
Eligible Haruka and other limited expresses Reserved seats covered Confirm that the train and section are eligible
Eligible JR West Special Rapid, Rapid and local trains Covered within the pass area Check the route and operator
JR Miyajima Ferry Covered Check the operator and current timetable
Eligible West Japan JR Bus local routes Covered Confirm that the particular local route is included
Highway buses Not covered Arrange and budget for separate travel
Tokaido Shinkansen, Shin-Osaka–Tokyo Not covered A separate ticket or other transport is needed
Kyushu Shinkansen, Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo Not covered A separate ticket or other transport is needed
Special Rapid A-seat Extra charge Check the applicable additional fare

A useful way to check a trip is to break it into individual legs. For each leg, identify the operator, train or bus type, departure and arrival points, and whether you need a reserved seat; then compare those details with the JR West pass coverage and conditions. A journey can include a covered JR West section and still require extra payment for a different operator, an excluded section or an additional service charge.

Do not assume that every train has an unreserved seating option. Some trains are all-reserved, and holding a pass does not create an unreserved seat on a service that has none. Check the seating arrangements for your chosen train and obtain any required reservation before boarding.

The product page is the place to confirm the precise area and eligible services for a particular leg. A route that looks geographically close to a covered line may still use a different company or an excluded service. If the pass does not cover one part of a planned journey, include the separate ticket or transport cost in your calculation rather than treating the entire trip as covered.

3. Does the pass fit your itinerary?

The most reliable value check is a comparison of the same journeys under the same conditions. Write down each traveller, travel date, origin, destination, train or service type and seat type, then price those journeys as individual tickets. Compare that total with the pass price, adding any uncovered sections and extra charges to the pass option.

Travel dates→Covered legs→Seat type→Extra charges→Individual ticket total→Pass total
Compare like-for-like trips.
Your comparison What to include
Individual-ticket total The tickets for the same eligible journeys you intend to take
Pass option The pass price for each traveller who needs one
Uncovered travel Excluded train, bus or operator sections
Additional charges Any extra fare or charge that applies to your chosen service
Miyajima ferry Include it only if your itinerary uses the eligible JR Miyajima Ferry

This method avoids relying on a saving quoted for someone else’s trip. A traveller making several eligible journeys may use the pass differently from someone taking only one long trip, while a journey with an excluded section may need extra tickets even when much of the route is covered. The comparison should reflect your own travel dates and actual intended services, not a broad estimate based only on the region you plan to visit.

For a clean comparison, make sure the individual-ticket total and pass option cover the same itinerary. Do not compare a reserved seat on one option with a different service or seat arrangement on the other without noting the difference. If you cannot yet identify the eligible service for a leg, verify it on the official pass page before treating its fare as covered.

JR West offers other products as well as this area pass, including wider-area tickets and one-direction tickets. The JR West ticket and pass overview can help you check whether another product is relevant to your planned area or journey direction. Compare the conditions of each product rather than assuming that a different pass has the same coverage, eligibility or validity as the Sanyo San’in Area Pass.

4. Choose dates that use the seven-day period

Because validity runs through seven consecutive days, the start date affects how much of your travel falls within the pass period. Mark the first day of use and the final day on your itinerary, and check that the journeys you want covered take place between 00:00 on the first day and 24:00 on the last day. A journey outside that period should be costed separately.

It can help to list planned rail journeys by date before buying. For each day, note whether you expect to use an eligible JR West train, the Sanyo Shinkansen, the ferry or an eligible local bus route, and distinguish these from services that are excluded. This does not predict whether the pass will save money; it gives you the details needed to make the comparison and choose a suitable start date.

Avoid treating the pass as a seven-day bundle of flexible travel days. If your itinerary has a break, the validity period continues through that break because the days are consecutive. Recheck the dates against your travel plan before payment, since the listed terms describe a set consecutive period rather than seven days you can activate separately.

5. Purchase and collection

JR West lists purchase from one month before the pass is used, with online reservations opening at 10:00 Japan time. The product page says online payment is made in advance by card and that virtual and numberless cards cannot be used. Payment and collection conditions can depend on the purchase method, so read the terms displayed for the channel you choose before submitting payment.

Purchase route→Collection search→Check hours→Passport and required documents→Reserve seat
Collection depends on how the pass was purchased.

A practical purchase check is:

  1. Open the official pass page and confirm eligibility, dates, coverage and the price shown for your purchase.
  2. Decide whether you are buying online or using an overseas exchange order, and check the requirements for that method.
  3. Use the JR West collection-location search to select the pass and purchase method. The search distinguishes collection for an overseas exchange order from collection for an online purchase.
  4. Check the current opening hours of the location you intend to use. The collection search gives a 1 February 2025 information basis date and asks travellers to confirm counter hours, so do not rely on that date as confirmation of current hours.
  5. Prepare the reservation details, the card used to purchase and your passport as required by the official instructions.

JR West states that collection requires reservation information and the purchasing card as well as a passport. The product page directs travellers without an IC passport to collect the pass at a counter. Follow the instructions for your specific purchase rather than assuming that the same collection process applies to every channel.

The collection search is useful before you choose a collection point because it lets you search by product and purchase method. Check that the result matches how you bought the pass: an overseas exchange order and an online purchase are treated as separate options in the search. Confirm the selected location’s current hours before travelling there, especially if your arrival or transfer schedule leaves little time for collection.

6. Reserved seats and using the pass

The pass includes eligible reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata and on eligible limited expresses such as Haruka. JR West says to reserve the applicable seat before boarding. Check the current pass instructions for where to obtain a reservation, and make sure the reservation matches the train and journey you intend to take.

The common conditions direct pass users to obtain reserved-seat tickets at eligible ticket machines or counters in the area. After collection, follow JR West’s instructions for using the pass at automatic ticket gates. Keep the pass available during travel, since JR West requires you to carry your passport and present it to staff if asked.

Before choosing a train, check whether it has reserved seats, unreserved seats or an all-reserved arrangement. An all-reserved train does not provide an unreserved seat simply because a passenger holds the pass, so do not board on that assumption. The extra charge for Special Rapid A-seat is separate from pass coverage; check the applicable additional fare if you intend to use that service.

If your itinerary involves several trains, compare each leg against the pass conditions rather than making one reservation or coverage assumption for the entire journey. A reserved seat on an eligible train and a connection on an excluded service have different payment requirements. Confirm those details before boarding so that you know which parts of the journey need a reservation, a separate ticket or an additional charge.

7. Using the pass for the Miyajima Ferry

The JR West pass information and the ferry operator identify the JR Miyajima Ferry as covered. The JR Miyajima Ferry’s official site also provides information about JR-WEST pass use. Check the operator and its current timetable when planning a ferry connection, rather than assuming that every ferry service or timetable entry has identical conditions.

The operator identifies sailings that approach the great torii for departures from Miyajimaguchi between 09:10 and 16:10. The timetable has regular, special, busy-period and New Year schedules, so the departure window alone is not a substitute for checking the timetable for your date. Allow your connection plan to follow the currently published schedule.

Coverage of the ferry does not confirm every other cost associated with a visit to Miyajima. The current visitor charges and any other island-related costs are not established by the pass or ferry coverage information here; check them separately before travelling. If bringing a pet, the ferry operator says pets may travel on deck on a lead or in a carrier, but are not allowed in the passenger cabin; consult the operator’s latest guidance before the trip.

8. Refunds, loss and other conditions

JR West states that the pass cannot be refunded after use has begun or after it has expired. The product information also says that a lost or stolen pass cannot be reissued. These conditions make it important to check the travel dates and purchase details before payment and to keep the pass secure during the trip.

The pass is for the named user, not for sharing between travellers. JR West’s common conditions also require you to carry your passport while travelling and show it to staff if requested. Read the full common terms and conditions alongside the product page, since the conditions for your eligibility and purchase method matter as well as the route coverage.

If you have a problem with a purchase or pass, use JR West’s current official guidance for your purchase channel and circumstances. Do not assume that a refund or replacement is available because a journey changed or the pass is missing; the stated rules specifically exclude refunds after use begins or expiry and reissue for loss or theft. Review the applicable conditions before buying, while you can still decide whether the dates and product suit your plan.

9. Frequently asked questions

Is the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka covered?

No. The Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo is not included in the Sanyo San’in Area Pass. If your journey begins in Tokyo, include the cost of a separate ticket or another transport option for that section when comparing the pass with individual travel. The covered Sanyo Shinkansen section is between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, subject to the pass conditions.

Can I use the pass on the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo?

No. The Kyushu Shinkansen section between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo is excluded from this pass. Price that part of the itinerary separately and include it in your total travel cost. The fact that a covered journey reaches Hakata does not make the onward Kyushu Shinkansen section eligible.

Who is eligible to buy and use the pass?

JR West lists the pass for short-term visitors with non-Japanese passports. Japanese nationals are not eligible, including Japanese nationals who have permanent residence abroad. Carry your passport during travel and show it to staff if requested, and check the official eligibility conditions before purchase.

How long is the pass valid?

The pass is valid for seven consecutive days, from 00:00 on the first day to 24:00 on the final day. The days cannot be selected separately or paused for a break in your itinerary. Choose a start date that places the journeys you intend to cover within that continuous period.

Do I need to reserve seats before boarding?

JR West says to reserve the applicable seat before boarding, and directs pass users to eligible ticket machines or counters in the area to obtain reserved-seat tickets. Check the seating arrangement of the particular train you plan to take, especially if it is all-reserved. A pass does not create an unreserved seat on a train that has none.

Is the JR Miyajima Ferry included, and are all Miyajima costs covered?

The JR Miyajima Ferry is included according to the JR West product information and the ferry operator’s pass information. Check the operator’s timetable for your travel date because schedules differ between regular, special, busy and New Year periods. Other costs associated with visiting Miyajima are not confirmed by ferry coverage, so check those charges separately.

What happens if the pass is lost or my plans change?

JR West says a lost or stolen pass cannot be reissued. It also says the pass cannot be refunded after use has begun or after the pass has expired. Check the complete purchase and refund conditions before paying, and keep the pass secure while travelling.
