A Yokohama geisha experience can be a ticketed performance, a private gathering at your chosen venue, a meal at a historic restaurant or a cruise on the bay. For travelers on a short visit, a public event is often the simplest way to attend; for a celebration or group dinner, a private ozashiki gives you more control over the setting and program.

Prices vary with the format. The Yokohama Geigi Association lists a basic performer rate of ¥25,000 per geisha for two hours, plus travel expenses. Its website gives conflicting information about whether that rate includes tax, so ask for an itemized total when booking. A scheduled public event on December 4, 2026, has tickets from ¥5,500 per person. (geigi.yokohama)

What happens at a Yokohama geisha experience?

Yokohama’s geisha, also called geigi, perform traditional arts and entertain guests at gatherings. Their repertoire includes dance, song and the shamisen, a three-stringed instrument. A gathering may also include ozashiki asobi: social games in which guests join the performers rather than simply watch a show.

The city’s geisha culture developed alongside Yokohama’s port. The Kanagawa Tourism Association’s introduction describes performances for occasions ranging from private cultural experiences to international meetings. The Yokohama Geigi Association also lists songs associated with the city, including Nogeyama Bushi and Hama Jiman. (kanagawa-kankou.or.jp)

A useful first step is to decide how you would like to participate. If you want to watch dance and hear about the history, a public performance may suit you. If you want time for conversation and games with your own guests, ask for a private gathering and describe those interests in your inquiry.

Compare Yokohama geisha experiences

Experience Best for Duration and published price
Public event at BANK PARK Solo travelers, couples and first-time visitors December 4, 2026; two-hour daytime or evening session; tickets from ¥5,500
Yokohama Geigi Association request A private performance with a smaller performer group Basic rate: ¥25,000 per performer for two hours; travel extra
Kanagawa DMO private venue package A larger private event at a venue you select Two hours; at least five performers; request a quote
Yokohama Bay private cruise A private party combining bay scenery and performance The listed cruise is two hours; request a quote
Tanakaya meal and culture tour Groups who want a traditional meal and cultural activities About 3.5 hours including travel; request a quote

The performer counts belong to different products. The association can respond to requests for two performers and recommends three; the separate DMO venue package asks customers to order at least five. Neither figure should be read as the number of guests required. (geigi.yokohama)

Attend a public event: Yokohama Geisha Night

Yokohama Geisha Night in BANK PARK takes place on Friday, December 4, 2026, in the Bashamichi area. It offers a way to experience Yokohama geisha without arranging a private venue or commissioning performers yourself.

The association’s event announcement and the ticket information page list three choices:

Ticket Time Price per person Includes
Daytime session 3:00–5:00 p.m. ¥5,500 A history talk, performance, games, tea and kintsuba sweets
Evening session 6:00–8:00 p.m. ¥7,500 Performance, games and a buffet meal; drinks are paid for separately
Evening and VIP after-party 6:00–about 9:30 p.m. ¥13,000 Evening session plus the after-party, with light food and free-flow drinks

All three prices include tax. The after-party is sold as a set with the evening session. The organizer plans for approximately 50 guests at each main session and approximately 10 at the after-party. Tickets are presented electronically at reception. (geigi.yokohama)

BANK PARK is at Yokohama Island Tower, 6-50-1 Honcho, Naka Ward. It is directly connected to Bashamichi Station exit 1b on the Minatomirai Line; the organizer also gives a walk of about five minutes from Sakuragicho Station. From Yokohama Station to Bashamichi, the railway’s adult fare is ¥193 by IC card or ¥200 by paper ticket. (at-yokohama.net)

For other dates, browse the Yokohama DMC events page. Its Geisha & Beer Party listing, for example, was for September 30, 2026, so use the date and booking details of the particular event you plan to attend.

Request performers from the Yokohama Geigi Association

A direct request works well if you have a restaurant, hotel function room or other venue in mind. The association’s request page recommends two dancers and one shamisen player, while also accepting requests for two performers. For games, its recommended three-person arrangement allows one dancer to help a guest while another takes part in the game. (geigi.yokohama)

The published basic rate is ¥25,000 per performer for two hours. That gives you a starting performer-fee calculation of ¥50,000 for two or ¥75,000 for three, before adding travel and other arrangements.

There is one important pricing discrepancy: the association homepage describes the ¥25,000 as tax-inclusive, while the request page describes it as before tax and lists travel expenses separately. Ask the association which tax treatment applies to your booking and request the final total in writing. (geigi.yokohama)

The association says that the basic rate is the same whether performers wear white makeup and a wig or appear without them. Without white makeup, a booking can be arranged from one hour. The shamisen player normally wears Western-style hair unless another style is requested. Extensions and after-parties can be discussed.

Use the association’s contact page to inquire; the association says it currently does not handle requests by telephone. Its office address is in Kohoku Ward, while your performance arrangements should specify the actual venue.

When writing, include:

Book a private venue package or bay cruise

Private event at a venue you choose

The Kanagawa DMO geisha package is a private event at a customer-designated venue. It has a two-hour base and can be extended in 30-minute units. The package asks customers to order at least five geisha, and the listed inclusion is the performer dispatch fee. (kanagawa-kankou.or.jp)

This is a practical starting point for a larger celebration, corporate dinner or group event where the venue is already arranged. The DMO describes English support and recommends arranging an English-speaking guide or MC.

Contact Kanagawa DMO at product@kanagawa-kankou.or.jp or 045-681-0007. Name the “Yokohama geisha experience at a customer-designated venue” and give the date, address, guest count and desired program. Ask for separate figures for performers, travel, venue, food, sound equipment and English-language assistance, as well as the extension and cancellation terms.

Private cruise with a geisha performance

For a waterfront itinerary, Kanagawa DMO lists a Yokohama Bay private cruise with a geisha performance. The experience combines bay views with a performance, conversation and games.

The listed cruise runs for two hours, with a suggested 5:00 p.m. start that can be adjusted. Its stated inclusions are the boat charter and fees for three performers. The DMO lists several possible piers, including Pukari Sanbashi, Red Brick Warehouse Pier, Zou-no-hana Pier and Shinko Futo Pier. Its booking guidance asks for a request at least two weeks ahead. (visitkanagawa.jp)

Email the DMO with your date, guest count and preferred start time. Ask which boat and pier would be used, the full price, whether food or drinks can be added, and what happens if weather affects sailing. Keep the cruise quote separate from the five-performer venue package: they are different products.

Combine geisha culture with a meal at Tanakaya

Tanakaya is a traditional restaurant founded in 1863 in the former Kanagawa-juku area. It is associated with Oryo, the wife of historical figure Sakamoto Ryoma, who worked there. The city’s venue listing describes a wooden building with private rooms and places it about an eight-minute walk from Yokohama Station. (tanakaya1863.co.jp)

The Yokohama Convention & Visitors Bureau lists a Tanakaya culture and kaiseki tour for approximately 20 participants. Its description combines a kaiseki meal with interaction with Yokohama geigi, a shamisen-playing experience and kimono photography. Allow approximately 3.5 hours including travel. The listing describes use of the Yokohama Minatomirai Railway; ask the provider for the tour’s starting point and current group quote. (business.yokohamajapan.com)

For a separate meal reservation, Tanakaya publishes prices on its current menu:

These are restaurant meal prices, not prices for the geisha culture tour. To inquire about dining, call 045-311-2621 or email ask@tanakaya1863.co.jp. If you want geisha as part of the meal, say so when asking for the complete arrangement and price. (tanakaya1863.co.jp)

Tanakaya is at 11-1 Daimachi, Kanagawa Ward. The restaurant has no parking, making Yokohama Station a convenient starting point. For a general orientation before choosing your route, use Google Maps for Yokohama.

How to request a quote and prepare for the visit

A clear inquiry helps the provider match the program to your group. You can adapt this message:

Hello, I would like to arrange a Yokohama geisha experience for our group. We have eight guests and would prefer an early-evening start at our hotel in Yokohama. We are interested in dance, shamisen and a chance to play ozashiki games. Could you suggest a suitable number of performers and send an itemized total, including tax, travel, any venue or meal charges, and English-language assistance?

Replace the group size, location and interests with your own. For a cruise, name the cruise product and ask for the boat, pier and boarding time. For Tanakaya’s group tour, mention the meal-and-culture listing and ask about the meeting point and activities for your party.

Before paying, compare the quote against the experience you want:

  1. Performers: How many will attend, and which arts will they perform?
  2. Venue and food: Are the room, meal and drinks part of the quoted arrangement?
  3. Language: Will a guide or host interpret the history and games, and is that person included?
  4. Timing: When should guests arrive, and what is the charge for extending the event?
  5. Practicalities: What are the payment and cancellation terms? Where should guests meet?
  6. Photography: When may guests take pictures, and may they share them?

At the gathering, follow the host’s lead on seating and participation. You can enjoy a performance without knowing the game rules in advance; tell the host if you would like an explanation before joining in.

FAQ

Can a solo traveler experience Yokohama geisha culture?

Yes. A ticketed public event is a useful choice because you buy an individual ticket rather than arrange a private performance. The December 4 BANK PARK event has a daytime session from ¥5,500. For a private experience, tell the provider you are traveling alone and ask for a total for your party size.

Can I request only two performers?

The Yokohama Geigi Association says it can respond to a request for two, although it recommends three: two dancers and one shamisen player. The Kanagawa DMO venue package has its own minimum order of five performers.

Is food included?

Food depends on the booking. The BANK PARK evening ticket includes a buffet; its daytime ticket includes tea and sweets. The Tanakaya culture tour includes kaiseki. For a private performer request, ask the venue and association to show meal and performer charges separately.

Do I need to speak Japanese?

Ask for English-language assistance when booking. The Kanagawa DMO venue package describes English support and recommends an English-speaking guide or MC. A host can also help explain the games and the sequence of the performance.

How long should I allow?

Allow two hours for the association’s basic performer rate or the DMO venue package. The listed bay cruise is also two hours. The Tanakaya culture tour takes about 3.5 hours including travel; a separate Tanakaya weekday lunch allows up to two hours.
