Geisha Experience in Yamanaka Onsen: Shows, Parties and Prices
Contents
Watch local geisha sing and dance at Yamanaka-za, or arrange a private ozashiki party with Yamanaka Onsen Geigi-ren. The public show is the simplest option for a short visit: it is listed for weekends and public holidays, lasts 40 minutes and costs ¥700 for a visitor of junior-high-school age or older.
For a more interactive experience, ask about a weekday games session or a private party. Yamanaka Onsen is in Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, and can be reached by bus from JR Kaga Onsen Station.
Choose your geisha experience
Geisha are professional entertainers trained in traditional arts. In Yamanaka Onsen, they are also called geigi. An ozashiki is a gathering with geisha, while ozashiki asobi refers to the games played at such gatherings.
| Experience | Best for | Where to enquire |
|---|---|---|
| Public show at Yamanaka-za | A short visit with a published ticket price | Yamanaka-za |
| Weekday games experience | Visitors who want to try party games | Yamanaka-za; see also Ishikawa Travel |
| Private ozashiki | A group that wants conversation, games and performance | Yamanaka Onsen Geigi-ren |
| Short private performance | Adding song and dance to a gathering | Yamanaka Onsen Geigi-ren |
| Private theater show | A group seeking its own weekday stage performance | Yamanaka-za |
The public show puts the emphasis on watching a stage performance. A private party offers more time with the performers: Geigi-ren describes an ozashiki as including seasonal dance, Yamanaka-bushi song, conversation and games. The group also offers shorter performances for gatherings and events. (yamanakageigi.com)
Listen for Yamanaka-bushi
Yamanaka-bushi is the town’s folk song and a Kaga City-designated intangible folk cultural property. Geigi-ren traces its history to songs brought by sailors on kitamaebune trading ships and adapted locally. The group says the choreography it performs follows the Soke Fujima school and was presented at the 1970 Osaka World Expo. Listen for the measured singing and flowing movements that connect the town’s hot-spring culture with its performing arts. (yamanakageigi.com)
Public show: schedule and ticket prices
Yamanaka-za’s official page lists Yamanaka-bushi Shiki no Mai, or “Four Seasons Dance,” on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 15:30 to 16:10. (yamanaka-spa.or.jp)
| Ticket | Published price |
|---|---|
| Junior-high-school age and older | ¥700 |
| Elementary-school age and younger | ¥350 |
| Children under three | Free |
| Adult rate for a group of 20 or more | ¥650 per adult |
| Individual adult show ticket with Kikunoyu bath ticket | ¥1,000 |
The combined ticket is useful if you intend to bathe as well as see the show. Bought separately, an adult show ticket and an adult bath admission come to ¥1,200 at the published rates. The show’s adult category starts at junior-high-school age; the bath’s adult category starts at age 12.
Yamanaka-za lists seasonal nagauta and kouta songs alongside Yamanaka-bushi and other local pieces. Its event page also describes opportunities for audience participation and photographs with geisha after the show. Ask staff about photography during the performance. (yamanaka-spa.or.jp)
The theater
Yamanaka-za is beside Kikunoyu’s women’s bath. Its hall seats 180 people, and the building can be viewed free of charge. Look up in the lobby: lacquered pillars and an ornate ceiling bring Yamanaka’s craft tradition into the theater itself. Visit Kaga describes the stage as made from Japanese cypress.

Call the theater to ask about tickets for your date and whether advance arrangements are needed for your group. The Kaga City listing also provides the address and telephone number. (yamanaka-spa.or.jp)
Private parties and performance prices
Yamanaka Onsen Geigi-ren publishes starting prices for several performances and discusses the performer’s fee for an ozashiki according to the occasion and budget. The performer’s fee is called ohanadai, literally “flower money.”
| Private option | Published duration | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| Ozashiki party | From one hour | Performer’s fee discussed according to the occasion and budget |
| Four Seasons Dance | About 15 minutes | From ¥21,000 |
| Performance group | About 30 minutes | From ¥35,000 |
| Celebratory dance | About 30 minutes | From ¥35,000 |
The short Four Seasons Dance combines seasonal dance with Yamanaka-bushi. The longer performance group also lists the Yamanaka festival lion dance. The celebratory option is intended for occasions such as ceremonies and anniversary parties. These starting fees give you a basis for choosing a format; request a quote for your own date, venue and group. (yamanakageigi.com)
When comparing an offer, ask whether the amount is per group or per guest, how many performers are included and how long they will stay. Request an itemized total covering any performer, venue, food, drink, tax and other charges. Also ask about payment and cancellation terms.
For a weekday private stage show, Yamanaka-za accepts enquiries directly. If you are staying at a ryokan, tell the front desk that you would like an ozashiki and ask whether the inn can help arrange the performers and a suitable room.
How to enquire or book
Public show or weekday theater experience
Call Yamanaka-za on 0761-78-5523 with your preferred date, the number of adults and children, and the kind of experience you want. For the public show, ask how to obtain tickets and whether the show-and-bath ticket is available.
For a weekday visit, ask about Yamanaka-bushi to ozashiki taiken, the song and party-games experience. Ishikawa Travel describes a weekday theater experience where visitors can play games with geisha. The theater can advise on the arrangements for your date. (ishikawatravel.jp)
Private party or performance
Start with the Geigi-ren’s official site. The group is based in Yamanaka-za; you can also call the theater and ask how to reach the group about an ozashiki. Have these details ready:
- Your preferred date, start time and an alternative date.
- The number of guests, including children.
- Your desired format: party, short dance or longer performance.
- The venue, or whether you need help finding one.
- Your preferred duration and total budget.
- Any needs concerning language, seating, accessibility or food.
A useful enquiry would be:
We would like to arrange a private ozashiki in Yamanaka Onsen. Could you tell us whether our date is available, suggest a venue and provide the total price for our group? Please include the number of performers, duration, food and drink charges, tax, payment method and cancellation terms.
Ask whether an interpreter or English-speaking contact can assist if needed. Keep the reply with the agreed venue, arrival time and payment instructions.
Getting to Yamanaka-za
From JR Kaga Onsen Station, take the local bus toward Yamanaka Onsen. Visit Kaga gives the journey as about 30 minutes, followed by a six-minute walk from Yamanaka Onsen Bus Terminal to Yamanaka-za.
The Kaga tourism bus page lists the fare from the station to Yamanaka Onsen Bus Terminal or Kikunoyu-mae as ¥470. Leave the station’s south exit and turn left for bus stop 2. Some buses finish at the terminal; buses bound for Kayano continue to Kikunoyu-mae, close to the theater. (visitkaga.jp)
If paying cash, take a numbered ticket when boarding and put it and the fare in the fare box when getting off. The tourism bus page also describes contactless card payment and says transport IC cards cannot be used on this route.
For a show-centered day trip, allow time for the bus, walk and ticket purchase before 15:30. The performance ends at 16:10; leave room in your plan for the walk back and the interval until the next bus. If connecting to a train, use the bus timetable to select a return departure before choosing your onward service.
Add a bath and a town walk
Kikunoyu public bath
Kikunoyu has separate buildings for men and women. The women’s bath is next to Yamanaka-za. Ishikawa’s official tourism page lists the following individual bath fees:
| Bath admission | Price |
|---|---|
| Age 12 and older | ¥500 |
| Ages 6 to under 12 | ¥150 |
| Ages 3 to under 6 | ¥70 |
| Under three | Free |
The same page lists opening hours of 6:45–22:00 and regular closures on the second and fourth Tuesdays, moved to the following day when a closure falls on a public holiday. Wash before entering the shared bath, and keep your towel out of the water. (hot-ishikawa.jp)
For one adult travelling from Kaga Onsen Station, two ¥470 bus rides and the ¥1,000 show-and-bath ticket make ¥1,940 before train travel, meals and other purchases.
A three-to-four-hour town plan
Visit Kaga’s suggested Yamanaka Onsen itinerary takes approximately three to four hours and combines scenery, crafts and the theater. For a weekend afternoon, start your walk early enough to reach Yamanaka-za before the show:
- Explore Kakusenkei Gorge, following the Daishoji River and looking out for Ayatori Bridge.
- Continue toward Korogi Bridge, a wooden bridge at the gorge.
- Browse the shops and galleries along Yuge Kaido, where you can look for Yamanaka lacquerware.
- Return to the square by Kikunoyu and Yamanaka-za for the 15:30 show.
- Bathe afterwards or use the time before your return bus for a meal or shopping.
If you have less time, pick either the gorge or the shopping street rather than trying to fit in the whole walk. On a weekday, the same route pairs well with an enquiry about the theater’s games experience or a private performance. (visitkaga.jp)
Frequently asked questions
Can children attend the public show?
Yes. Yamanaka-za publishes a ¥350 ticket for elementary-school-age children and younger, with free admission for children under three. For a private party, include children’s ages in your enquiry so the organizer can advise on the arrangements.
Can I see a geisha performance on a weekday?
Ask Yamanaka-za about its weekday games experience or a private theater performance. Geigi-ren also offers private parties and performances. The regular public stage show is listed for weekends and public holidays.
Is an ozashiki the same as the public show?
No. The public show is a scheduled stage performance with individual tickets. An ozashiki is arranged for a group and can include conversation and party games as well as song and dance.
Can I take photographs?
The theater’s event page describes photographs with geisha after the public show. Ask theater staff before photographing during a performance, and ask your host or performers about photographs at a private party.
Do I need to stay overnight?
A public show can fit into a day trip from Kaga Onsen Station. An overnight stay gives you more time for the bath, town walk and a privately arranged evening party.
