In Nara’s Ganrin district, Ochaya Bar Tsuruya offers two ways to arrange time with a geisha. You can inquire directly about a private gathering with Kikuno, the geisha who runs the venue, or book a published geisha-and-games experience through FunNow.

For the FunNow experience, prices start at ¥18,000 per person, with a minimum of two participants. Tsuruya’s own price list separately includes a ¥5,000 charge per guest and ¥50,000 for a two-hour sitting with Kikuno. Ask Tsuruya which charges apply to your private gathering and request the complete group price. (myfunnow.com)

Tsuruya is at 26-2 Imamikado-cho, Nara City, about an eight-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station. For a private inquiry, email info@kikuno.net or call 0742-22-5588. The address is also available in a map search for Tsuruya. (myfunnow.com)

Ganrin and Nara’s Geisha Culture

Ganrin, also written 元林院, is Nara’s historic geisha district. Like Kyoto’s better-known districts, it is a hanamachi, or “flower town”: an area associated with geisha, teahouses and the performing arts.

The district has its own Nara traditions. A Nara City museum document describes local arts including Nara kouta, a style of short song associated with the area. The Nara Prefectural Library also records the district’s past and efforts to pass its culture on. (library.pref.nara.jp)

At Tsuruya, Kikuno brings that culture into a contemporary teahouse-bar setting. The venue’s official page introduces her and lists its charges. For a visitor, an ozashiki offers a chance to spend time with a geisha in a social setting rather than watching a performance from an auditorium.

A few terms are helpful when reading about the experience:

A private gathering and a ticketed group experience can offer different combinations of conversation, performance, games and refreshments. Choose the format that suits your party before comparing prices.

Choose a Tsuruya Experience

Book the published geisha-and-games experience

The FunNow listing for Tsuruya is a practical choice for travelers who want a published programme and per-person price. It describes a two-hour experience for at least two people, with prices starting at ¥18,000 per person. The version with an all-you-can-drink option starts at ¥19,000 per person. (myfunnow.com)

The listed programme includes:

A full meal is not included. For two people, the starting price is ¥36,000 for the regular option or ¥38,000 for the all-you-can-drink option. Select the number of guests and the corresponding number of courses on the booking pages, then review the price and cancellation terms for your chosen date.

The listing asks guests to leave large luggage at a station before arriving. It also says there is no elevator, so contact the venue about access if anyone in your party uses a wheelchair. Children under six are generally not admitted to this experience, with an exception described for group bookings. These conditions apply to the FunNow experience; ask Tsuruya about arrangements for a private party. (myfunnow.com)

Inquire about a private gathering

For a gathering tailored to your own group, contact Tsuruya directly. Tell the venue whether you would like to meet at Tsuruya or are asking about another venue, and describe what matters most to you: conversation with Kikuno, a performance, games, drinks or a meal.

This route is useful for a celebration, a group with particular accessibility or dietary needs, or travelers who want to discuss the programme before committing. Ask who would attend, how long the gathering would last and whether interpretation can be arranged.

The direct inquiry and FunNow listing are separate booking routes. Use the terms of the route you choose rather than adding the FunNow price to Tsuruya’s private-party charges.

Tsuruya Prices and How to Budget

Tsuruya’s official price list gives the following figures. The clothing and hairstyle entries appear alongside Kikuno’s listed fees; ask the venue how they apply to your proposed gathering. (tsuruya.my.canva.site)

Listed item Price
Charge per guest ¥5,000
Drinks From ¥1,000
Bottles From ¥10,000
Kikuno’s fee for one sitting ¥50,000 for two hours
Additional time with Kikuno ¥5,000 per 30 minutes
Japanese dress with Western-style hair ¥25,000 for two hours; ¥2,500 per additional 30 minutes
Floor-length kimono with Japanese hairstyle ¥30,000 for two hours; ¥3,000 per additional 30 minutes
White makeup Market price; ask Tsuruya

For four guests, the listed guest charge comes to ¥20,000. If Tsuruya says that charge and Kikuno’s ¥50,000 two-hour fee both apply, those two items would total ¥70,000, before drinks and any other applicable charges. Ask for an itemized quotation and whether tax is included before using that figure as your budget.

When requesting the total, include these points:

  1. The number of guests and the proposed length of the gathering
  2. The guest charge and each geisha’s fee
  3. Drinks, bottles and any meal arrangements
  4. Clothing, hairstyle or makeup charges relevant to the booking
  5. Tax, additional time, payment and cancellation terms

If you have a maximum budget, include it in your inquiry. Tsuruya can then tell you what arrangement is possible within that amount.

How to Book

Directly with Tsuruya

Start with Tsuruya’s official contact page, then email info@kikuno.net or call 0742-22-5588. Email is useful if you want to send several questions together and keep the reply with your travel plans.

You can adapt this message after adding those details:

Subject: Private geisha experience in Nara

Hello Tsuruya,
I would like to arrange a private geisha gathering for our group. I have included our guest count, preferred dates and start times, and the venue we would like to use.

Could you tell us what you can arrange for a two-hour gathering and who would attend? We would also appreciate an itemized total, including the guest charge, geisha fee, drinks, any venue charge and tax.

Please let us know about language assistance, payment and cancellation conditions, and how to confirm the booking. Thank you.

Once you receive a proposal, check the date, start time, venue, number of guests, programme and total. Ask “Is our booking confirmed?” and save the reply.

Through FunNow

Open the Tsuruya experience page on FunNow, choose the regular or all-you-can-drink course, and enter your party size. The listing instructs guests to select the number of people and then the same number of courses.

This route is particularly convenient if the listed dance, games, photos and interpretation suit your group. Review the available date, final price and cancellation conditions during booking. For nut allergies or access needs, contact the organizer before purchasing.

Getting There and Planning Your Day

From Kyoto or Osaka

The Nara City Tourism Association gives these approximate train times:

Starting point Route Approximate train time
Kyoto Station Kintetsu limited express to Kintetsu-Nara 35 minutes
Osaka-Namba Station Direct Kintetsu service to Kintetsu-Nara 40 minutes
Kyoto Station JR Miyakoji Rapid to JR Nara 45 minutes
Osaka Station JR Yamatoji Rapid to JR Nara 50 minutes

The Kintetsu limited express requires a surcharge. Times vary by service, so use a current timetable when choosing your train. (narashikanko.or.jp)

From Kintetsu-Nara Station, FunNow gives an approximately eight-minute walk to Tsuruya. Save the Tsuruya address map before setting out. The Japanese address is 奈良県奈良市今御門町26-2.

JR Nara and Kintetsu-Nara are different stations. If you arrive by JR, the official Naramachi area guide puts the walk from JR Nara to the Naramachi area at roughly 20 minutes; allow additional time to reach your particular destination. (visitnara.jp)

Pair the experience with a Naramachi walk

Naramachi’s narrow streets, traditional townhouses, cafés and small shops make a good daytime companion to a geisha experience. Start around Sarusawa Pond, walk through the lanes around Gangoji Temple, and leave time to return to Tsuruya for your booked start.

For a look inside a townhouse, visit Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie, a reproduction of a traditional merchant house. The Nara City Tourism Association lists admission as free and opening hours as 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It closes on Mondays, with additional holiday and year-end closures. It is at 44 Gangoji-cho, about a 20-minute walk from either Nara station. (narashikanko.or.jp)

Another stop is Naramachi Nigiwai-no-Ie, a traditional house with free admission. Its visitor information lists hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and a regular Wednesday closure. From Kintetsu-Nara Station, the house gives a walking time of approximately 13 minutes. (naramachi-nigiwainoie.jp)

If your geisha experience is in the evening, visit the townhouses first, have an early meal, and return to the station afterward. For the FunNow programme, remember that snacks are provided but a full meal is not.

Hanaakari: A Public Performance Option

A public stage event is another way to encounter geisha performing arts. Naramachi Hanaakari has brought geisha and maiko from different districts to Nara for performances organized with the Ganrin Hanamachi Revival Project.

The 2025 Hanaakari programme included Yamato Odori performances on April 5 at Nara Centennial Hall and April 6 at Naramachi Center. Each began at 1:00 p.m. A one-day ticket cost ¥8,000, while a two-day ticket cost ¥15,000, both including tax. (kikuno.net)

The same programme listed an April 6 banquet at Kikusuiro for ¥30,000 per person, including food and drinks. Those were 2025 event prices.

For a future performance, look for an announcement on the Ganrin Hanamachi Revival Project site and follow the organizer’s ticket instructions. A stage ticket suits travelers who want to watch a formal programme with an audience; a Tsuruya gathering offers a smaller setting with opportunities for conversation.

FAQ

Can first-time visitors book a geisha experience?

Yes. The FunNow listing presents its Tsuruya experience for visitors without prior knowledge of Japanese culture and says staff provide introductions and interpretation. For a private gathering, introduce your group and its interests when contacting Tsuruya. (myfunnow.com)

Is English available?

The FunNow experience lists English and Chinese interpretation. For a direct private booking, include your preferred language and ask Tsuruya about interpretation and its cost.

What should I wear?

The FunNow listing does not prescribe a dress code and recommends comfortable clothing. For a private celebration or a meal at another venue, ask about that venue’s dress expectations.

Can we take photographs?

The FunNow programme includes a photo opportunity with a geisha. During a private gathering, ask when photographs are welcome before taking them.

Can children join?

For the FunNow experience, children under six are generally not admitted; the listing describes an exception for group bookings. Ask Tsuruya about children when arranging a private gathering.

Should we eat before the experience?

Plan a meal separately unless your chosen arrangement includes one. The FunNow experience provides drinks and snacks rather than a full meal. For a private gathering, ask Tsuruya whether food can be arranged and have it included in the quotation.
