Geisha Experience in Gifu: Boats, Prices and Booking
Contents
On Gifu’s Nagara River, a geisha experience can bring together a private boat, local food, traditional performances and nighttime cormorant fishing. Gifu’s performers are known locally as geigi, and an evening of entertainment aboard a boat is called funasobi.
A private geigi cruise is a different booking from an ordinary cormorant-fishing viewing boat. For a hosted evening, contact Nagaragawa Meguru Tours about its semi-custom cruise. For a lower-cost fishing trip, book a shared viewing boat through Gifu City.
What happens on a Gifu geisha cruise?
The Nagara River cruise combines the setting of a fishing trip with the hospitality of an ozashiki: an entertainment gathering traditionally held in a private room. On the water, guests dine and talk with their hosts before watching performances and, during the fishing season, the fishing itself.
Nagaragawa Meguru Tours’ semi-custom cruise describes a roughly three-hour evening. Its outline includes a departure accompanied by drums and flute, food and drinks, dancing to shamisen music, and games with the performers. The troupe can include geigi, apprentice maiko and a hōkan, a traditional male entertainer. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
When fishing begins, the viewing boat travels near the fishing boats. Their fires illuminate the water as the fishing masters work with trained cormorants. A highlight is sōgarami, when the fishing boats line up across the river to drive fish into the shallows.
The boat outing is rooted in Gifu’s history of hosting guests on the river. Gifu City’s account of the tradition describes how boat entertainment with geigi and maiko declined during the Edo period and was later revived. The local song Kazeori Eboshi is part of that history. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
Choose an experience and budget for it
| Experience | Best for | Published price or planning figure |
|---|---|---|
| Semi-custom geigi cruise | A private group seeking food, performances and river scenery | Approximately ¥22,000–¥35,000 per person; approximately ¥220,000–¥500,000 total |
| Nobunaga-themed boat experience | A group interested in historical storytelling and a luxury boat | Approximately ¥30,000–¥40,000 per person; approximately ¥200,000–¥420,000 total |
| Indoor ozashiki | A private meal or gathering at an inn or restaurant | Gifu Geigi Kenban lists ¥16,000 for one performer for two hours |
| Shared fishing-viewing boat | Travelers who mainly want to see cormorant fishing | 2026 regular-day fare: ¥4,200 per adult |
The cruise prices are the operator’s published planning ranges; the final quote depends on the party and arrangements. The semi-custom listing puts the boat, performer fees, boxed meals and drinks in its price breakdown. It describes capacity as approximately five to 30 guests per boat, with boat size chosen for the party. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
The Nobunaga-themed trip uses performers in historical costume and draws on Gifu’s connection to the warlord Oda Nobunaga. Its listed capacity is approximately five to 14 guests per luxury boat, and its stated duration is also around three hours. Choose it if the historical theme is as important to your group as the fishing. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
Understanding the indoor geigi fee
Gifu Geigi Kenban’s published ozashiki rates list ¥16,000 for two hours and ¥3,000 for an additional 30 minutes, including tax. The Gifu Convention and Visitors Bureau identifies the two-hour charge as the fee for one performer. The association also lists an ¥18,000 performer fee for an ukai boat. (gifu-geigi.jimdofree.com)
These are performer fees, called hanadai, rather than a complete meal or cruise price. The association says that one-way vehicle costs are charged for ozashiki and fishing-boat appearances, and a restaurant may charge an additional booking fee. Ask the organizer to itemize the performers, transport, room, meal, drinks and any service charges.
The Kenban and the troupe featured in Meguru Tours’ cruise are separate contacts. Use the Kenban’s rates when discussing its performers, and request Meguru Tours’ own quote for its package.
A lower-cost fishing boat
Gifu City’s published 2026 shared-boat fares were ¥4,200 per adult on regular days and ¥5,100 on designated busy days. Children aged three through elementary school were ¥2,100 and ¥2,600 respectively; children under three traveled free. An adult fare applies from junior-high-school age. These fares include tax. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
For a private viewing boat without a hosted entertainment package, the city listed a 15-passenger boat at ¥53,600 on regular days or ¥65,100 on busy days in 2026. Food and performers are separate arrangements. The city’s fare page also lists larger boats and boats with chair seating. (ukai-gifucity.jp)
How to book a cruise or indoor ozashiki
Book the geigi cruise
Start with the semi-custom cruise listing. Nagaragawa Meguru Tours accepts inquiries through the form on that page, by email at meguru@onpaku.asia, or by phone at 058-269-3858. Its English boat-tour page describes the experience in English. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
Send more than one possible date and include:
- The number of adults and children in your party.
- Whether you want an evening with cormorant fishing or an off-season boat outing.
- Your preferred duration and whether you want a private boat.
- Whether you would like dinner, drinks, dancing, games or an English-speaking guide.
- Any dietary, seating or boarding requirements.
You can use this wording:
Hello, I would like to arrange a private Nagara River cruise with geigi for my group. Could you tell me which of our preferred dates are available and send the total price for the group? Please include the boat, performers, food, drinks, tax and any interpretation or transport charges. We would also like to know the meeting time and cancellation terms.
The operator says it sends an estimate and available dates after an inquiry. Its listing states that booking is completed after the schedule is arranged and payment is received; payment on the day may also be discussed. Keep the written itinerary and payment instructions together. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
For this cruise, the operator lists customer cancellation charges of 20% seven to four days before travel, 50% three to two days before, 80% the day before and 100% on the day. It also states that the fee is refunded if fishing is canceled and the tour consequently cannot operate. Ask how those terms apply to the itinerary you choose. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
Arrange an indoor gathering
For an indoor ozashiki, contact Gifu Geigi Kenban at 058-262-4167. Its address is Ueda Building, second floor, 23 Takaiwacho, Gifu City. If you are staying at a local ryokan, you can also ask the property whether it can help arrange a private room, meal and performers. (gifucvb.or.jp)
Tell the organizer whether you already have a venue. Give the date, guest count, desired length and meal budget, then ask for a group total. If you are a first-time visitor, say so and ask who will coordinate the restaurant and performer booking.
Reserve a regular viewing boat
For the standard fishing trip, use the Gifu City viewing-boat reservation page. Shared and private boats can be booked online with credit-card payment, or at the viewing-boat office in person. The office does not accept boat reservations by telephone. Gifu City recommends booking ahead, although same-day shared-boat places may be available when seats remain. (ukai-gifucity.jp)
A hotel or ryokan can also arrange a boat as part of a meal or overnight package. Tell the property whether your priority is fishing alone or a separate geigi performance.
Season, departure times and food
The Nagara River cormorant-fishing season normally runs from May 11 through October 15. Fishing pauses for the mid-autumn moon and may be canceled when river conditions are unsafe. The city’s 2026 schedule listed September 24 as the scheduled closure; dates for other years should be checked separately. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
Meguru Tours also lists an off-season boat period from November 1 through April 16. This is an opportunity to ask about a river gathering outside fishing season, with the program arranged for the date and party. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
For regular shared boats, the city’s listed departures are 6:15, 6:45 and 7:15 p.m. Fishing generally starts around 7:45 p.m., and the viewing-boat operator lists disembarkation around 8:30–9:00 p.m. The private geigi cruise uses its own itinerary: Meguru Tours describes a typical outing of about three hours, often around 5:30–8:30 p.m. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
If you want to eat on a regular boat, the earlier departure gives you more time before the fishing. The fare does not include a meal, but passengers may bring food and drinks. The viewing-boat office’s meal guide lists caterers that deliver boxed meals to the boarding area. Gifu City advises arranging food before arrival because boxed meals are not sold near the landing and food is not sold aboard. (ukai-gifucity.jp)
The city’s 2026 busy-day list included the season opening, selected summer Saturdays, Obon dates and September holiday dates. For more choice of shared-boat seats and departure times, consider a regular weekday and reserve early. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
Getting to the Nagara River
From Nagoya Station, take the JR Tokaido Main Line to Gifu Station. JNTO’s route guide gives a train journey of about 20 minutes. From Gifu Station, take a Gifu Bus to Nagarabashi, about 15 minutes, followed by a short walk. Allow additional time for connections and getting to the meeting point. (japan.travel)
Meguru Tours identifies the viewing-boat waiting area at 425-7 Kamizaimokucho, Gifu City, as the meeting place for its semi-custom cruise. You can also use the Nagara River map to orient yourself, then follow the meeting instructions supplied with your booking. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
The Gifu Geigi Kenban office in Takaiwacho is a separate address; it is a contact for arranging performers, not the river boarding point.
For an easy day trip from Nagoya, spend the afternoon around Gifu Park and the river, have an early meal or collect a boxed dinner, then head to the landing. If you would rather avoid a late return journey, ask a Nagara River hotel or ryokan about a stay with a fishing-viewing package.
Etiquette and practical tips
An ozashiki is a hosted social occasion as well as a performance. Enjoy the dancing, respond to conversation and join a game if invited. You do not need to know the rules beforehand; tell your host if you would appreciate an explanation in English.
Ask the performers before taking close-up photographs, and follow the organizer’s instructions during performances. For a private gathering, tell the organizer in advance if someone needs a chair, has difficulty with steps or boat boarding, or requires a particular meal. Ask whether an interpreter can be arranged and have its cost included in the quote.
On regular viewing boats, prepare for an evening outdoors and bring what you need before boarding. The city says some boats have toilets; when boats are moored near the bank, a separate toilet boat is available nearby. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
FAQ
Can first-time visitors arrange an ozashiki?
Contact Gifu Geigi Kenban or ask your hotel to help organize one. Give the date, number of guests, preferred venue and budget, and ask what arrangements are available for your party.
Is a geigi cruise suitable for a small group?
Meguru Tours describes its semi-custom boat as accommodating approximately five to 30 people. A small party can inquire, but should look at the total group price as well as the per-person planning range: the package includes a private boat and performers. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
Can I see cormorant fishing without booking a boat?
Yes. Gifu City recommends the Nagaragawa Promenade on the north bank upstream of Nagarabashi for a riverside view. A viewing boat brings you closer to the fishing. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
What if I visit outside the fishing season?
Ask Meguru Tours about its off-season boat gathering, or arrange an indoor ozashiki. The operator lists boat outings from November 1 to April 16 as well as during the fishing season. (gifu-nagaragawa.jp)
Is dinner included on a shared fishing boat?
The standard city boat fare excludes food. Bring a meal, order a boxed dinner for delivery, or look for a hotel or ryokan package that combines dining and the boat trip. (city.gifu.lg.jp)
