Okayama Castle: tickets, access and a practical visit

Okayama Castle is a black-walled castle with a reconstructed keep. Adult admission is ¥500; arrive before the 17:00 last entry and expect stairs above the fourth floor. ⓘ S1, checked 4 November 2026.

The main planning choice is simple: visit the keep alone, combine it with Korakuen Garden, or add a separate Bizen pottery session. The castle ticket, a combined ticket and the workshop each answer a different need. Booking the workshop does not replace the admission arrangements for the keep.

For a visual introduction, Deep Japan By the Last Samurai presents Okayama Castle together with Korakuen Garden. The two-place view helps you decide whether the combined ticket suits your interests.

1Okayama Castle tickets, hours and what is included

The castle's official visitor page lists adult admission at ¥500 and a castle–Korakuen combined ticket at ¥800. It lists admission for junior-high-school students and younger as free. ⓘ S1, checked 4 November 2026.

Choice Published price What it covers Booking Timing Official source and check date
Adult castle admission ¥500 Admission to the keep Ordinary visits need no advance reservation 9:00–17:30; last entry 17:00 S1 and S2; 4 November 2026
Junior-high-school students and younger Free Castle admission in the listed school-age category Ordinary visits need no advance reservation Same published opening hours S1 and S2; 4 November 2026
Paid group of at least 20 ¥400 per adult Group castle admission Advance contact is recommended Confirm group arrangements with the castle S1 and S2; 4 November 2026
Castle and Korakuen combined ticket ¥800 The castle and Korakuen Garden Check the castle's ticket information Garden opening hours are separate S1; 4 November 2026
Standard Bizen pottery experience ¥1,250 500 g of clay for the standard experience Reservations have priority About 60 minutes S4; 4 November 2026

The adult line uses age 15 and over, while the free line uses school status. If you are travelling with a 15-year-old junior-high-school student, ask the ticket counter which category applies. Keep the child's school status clear rather than choosing a category from age alone.

The keep closes from 29 to 31 December. Severe weather and inspections can also cause temporary closure. Ordinary admission does not require a reservation, but a busy event can lead to entry restrictions. A reservation-free visit therefore still needs a check of the castle's notices before departure. ⓘ S1 and S2, checked 4 November 2026.

Card, electronic money and QR payment are accepted according to the visitor page. This makes payment flexible, but the posted price and the ticket's coverage still matter more than the method of payment. ⓘ S1.

2Okayama Castle access from the station

From Okayama Station, take the tram towards Higashiyama, get off at Shiroshita, then walk to the castle. The official guide gives about five minutes on the tram and about ten minutes on foot. These are separate journey segments, not a promise of a station-to-ticket-counter total. ⓘ S1, checked 4 November 2026.

Approach Published travel detail Useful planning point Source and check date
Tram from Okayama Station About 5 minutes to Shiroshita, then about 10 minutes on foot Choose the Higashiyama direction S1; 4 November 2026
Arrival at Kencho-mae bus stop About 5 minutes on foot Confirm the bus journey before travelling S1; 4 November 2026
Car from Okayama Interchange About 20 minutes The keep has no dedicated parking lot S1; 4 November 2026

The written destination is Okayama Castle / 岡山城, 2-3-1 Marunouchi, Kita-ku, Okayama. Save that address as well as the castle location on Google Maps. If a map search offers another castle, compare its address before following the route.

The castle does not have a dedicated parking lot for the keep. A road journey therefore needs an additional parking plan. The access times above do not include finding a space, walking from a parking facility or waiting at the ticket counter. For broader transport planning, use our Japan public transport guide alongside your chosen operator's timetable.

Sugorokujapan's Okayama City video places the Black Castle within a wider city visit, rather than presenting it as an isolated stop.

3Okayama Castle history and the reconstructed keep

The black exterior gives Okayama Castle the name Ujo, or Crow Castle. Its keep was completed in 1597, and the present structure was rebuilt in 1966 after wartime destruction. The building visitors enter today is therefore a reconstruction, rather than the original keep surviving unchanged. ⓘ S3.

Read the two dates as different building stages

Ukita Hideie established the main enclosure on the hill at Okayama. Another distinctive detail is the irregular pentagonal shape of the keep's stone base and first-floor plan. These facts provide a useful way to look at the castle: notice the dark walls first, then the shape at the base, and finally the relationship between the reconstructed building and its older history. ⓘ S3.

It is easy to treat every visible part of a castle as the same age. Here, keeping the 1597 completion and 1966 reconstruction separate gives a clearer understanding of what you are seeing. The castle's official history page is the place to continue reading about its development.

Mountains and Waves includes castle views within a wider Okayama and Kurashiki travel video. Use the surroundings it shows to decide whether your next stop should remain in Okayama or become a separate trip.

4Okayama Castle stairs, lockers and family access

The indoor lift reaches the fourth floor. The fifth and sixth floors require stairs, and the outdoor approach to the keep has no lift or similar equipment. This distinction matters before you buy a ticket: an indoor lift does not make the entire station-to-top-floor route step-free. ⓘ S1.

If someone in your group has difficulty with slopes or stairs, contact the castle about the approach as well as the interior. Loan wheelchairs cannot be reserved. Strollers may be brought inside, although restrictions can apply when crowded. Those are different arrangements; a stroller policy should not be read as a guarantee of wheelchair access to every floor. ⓘ S1 and S2.

The castle's contact number is 086-225-2096. Describe the mobility support you need and the areas you hope to reach. Asking about a specific route gives staff a clearer question than asking only whether the castle is “accessible.”

The indoor lockers use a refundable ¥100 coin system. Wi-Fi is available from basement level one through the sixth floor. Keep luggage compact for the stair sections; for larger bags and onward journeys, consult our Japan luggage forwarding guide. ⓘ S1.

Other useful locations are the castle stamp near the basement reception and the castle seal sold in the basement shop. The AED is near that shop too. Pets other than assistance dogs are not admitted, and smoking is prohibited inside the keep. ⓘ S2.

Japancastle's video concentrates on Okayama Castle itself, offering a castle-focused visual companion to the practical access information.

5Okayama Castle pottery and a flexible visit plan

The Bizen pottery workshop stands on the lower castle grounds. Its standard experience uses 500 g of clay, costs ¥1,250 and takes about 60 minutes. Published starting slots are 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00. Reservations have priority. ⓘ S4, checked 4 November 2026.

Bizen ware is pottery associated with this region. The important practical difference from buying a souvenir is the finishing process: your own piece is fired later. The workshop gives about one to two months until completion, and shipping costs extra. If you leave Japan before then, discuss the delivery arrangements directly with the workshop before committing to the activity. ⓘ S4.

A useful sequence is to choose a workshop slot first, then arrange the castle visit around it. The pottery has a published duration; ordinary castle sightseeing does not have a fixed duration in the official details used here. Leave your sightseeing flexible instead of treating the workshop's hour as the length of the whole visit.

  1. Open the official workshop page and choose a listed session.
  2. Ask the workshop about reservation availability and delivery after firing.
  3. Open the castle visitor guide to check the opening and last-entry times for your plan.
  4. Choose the castle-only or castle–Korakuen ticket according to the places you intend to enter.
  5. At the station, check the Higashiyama-bound tram service and keep the walking segment separate in your plan.

Pang and YT's spring video combines the castle and Korakuen within the same outing. Its seasonal images can help you picture the pairing, while the current operator pages remain the reference for opening arrangements.

The combined ticket's ¥800 price is an admission component, not a full-day budget. Transport, meals and any pottery shipping are separate. Adding the standard ¥1,250 workshop makes those two listed ticket/activity components ¥2,050 for an adult using the combined ticket; it still does not include those other expenses. Prices were checked on 4 November 2026. ⓘ S1 and S4.

For another Japanese castle to compare with this reconstructed keep, read our Hiroshima Castle guide. Compare the access route and ticket conditions separately rather than assuming castle visits follow one standard format.

Castle + Korakuen ¥800→Standard pottery ¥1,250→Subtotal ¥2,050→Transport, food and shipping separate
Keep the published activity subtotal separate from the trip budget

6Okayama Castle questions before you go

If you collect castle visit seals, the castle FAQ says they are sold in the basement shop. It also places the Japan 100 Castles stamp near the basement reception; a seal and a stamp are separate items. ⓘ S2, checked 4 November 2026.

Basement reception: Japan 100 Castles stamp
A visit seal and the castle stamp are different items
Ordinary keep visit · no reservation→Groups · advance contact recommended→Pottery · reservation priority
A walk-in castle visit and a priority-booked workshop are different arrangements
Do I need to reserve ordinary admission?

No advance reservation is needed for ordinary Okayama Castle sightseeing. Groups are also reservation-free, but advance contact is recommended. Events and crowding may lead to entry restrictions. The pottery workshop has its own reservation-priority arrangement. ⓘ S2 and S4.

Can I see every floor by lift?

No. The lift reaches the fourth floor, while floors five and six require stairs. The outdoor approach also has no lift. Ask staff about the complete route if stairs or slopes affect your visit. ⓘ S1.

Is the castle open until 17:30?

The published opening period is 9:00–17:30, but last entry is 17:00. Closing time is not the latest time to arrive at the entrance. The regular closure is 29–31 December, with possible temporary closures for severe weather or inspections. ⓘ S1, checked 4 November 2026.

Can I collect my pottery on the same day?

The workshop gives approximately one to two months for firing and completion, with a separate shipping charge. Confirm the delivery address and practical arrangements directly with the workshop. ⓘ S4.

Does the combined ticket mean the garden keeps castle hours?

No. The ¥800 ticket combines admission, but Korakuen's own opening arrangements need a separate check. Decide on the ticket after checking both places against your travel plan. ⓘ S1, checked 4 November 2026.

Solo Polo's video focuses on a visit to the castle and nearby garden, giving another visual perspective on that paired outing.

Before leaving, check the official castle visitor information for current access and admission arrangements, and contact the workshop separately if pottery is part of your day.
