The JR Airport train connects New Chitose Airport with Sapporo. JR lists a one-way fare of ¥1,230 and a fastest time of 37 minutes for a Rapid service. Hokuto Kotsu lists its airport bus at ¥1,500 for adults and ¥750 for children to its Sapporo Station-front or Susukino service. These are different ways to reach the city, so compare the stop you need, your travel date and how you plan to pay—not only the headline time or fare.

The ¥1,230 train fare is the basic fare, not a reserved-seat package. A bus may bring you closer to your destination, but its running time and operation are affected by road conditions. Check the current service information and the onward journey from Sapporo Station or your bus stop before setting out. The details below were checked against operator and airport information on 4 November 2026.

For a first overview, JR Hokkaido’s Airport service information covers train types and fares, while Hokuto Kotsu’s Sapporo airport-bus page gives bus fares, payment information and operating cautions. The New Chitose Airport transport page lists airport transport counters. Check the pages again for your travel date, especially if your arrival is time-sensitive.

Train or bus: the main differences

The train has a published fare and several Airport service types, but the fastest time is not necessarily the time of the train you will catch. The bus has a published adult and child fare for the listed Sapporo Station-front or Susukino service, and its performance depends on road conditions. In either case, the trip does not automatically end at your hotel: include the route from the arrival station or bus stop to your accommodation.

The operator says transport IC cards are not accepted. Road conditions and expressway closures can cause sudden cancellations.

JR’s Japanese page lists the fastest Special Rapid overall as 33 minutes, but its description of daytime Special Rapid services gives a fastest time of 36 minutes. JR’s English page gives 33 minutes for daytime Special Rapid services, so the two descriptions do not match exactly. JR also lists a fastest daytime Section Rapid time of 43 minutes. Treat these figures as service-type information, not as a promise for every departure; check the current timetable for the train you intend to take. (JR Hokkaido, Japanese Airport information; JR Hokkaido, English Airport guide)

Neither published journey time includes everything from leaving your aircraft to reaching your hotel. Allow for your own arrival procedures, getting to the train station or bus counter, waiting for the service and continuing from the Sapporo arrival point. JR Sapporo Station and the subway’s Sapporo station do not share the same ticket gate, so check the onward connection separately if you plan to transfer to the subway.

Taking the JR Airport train

JR Hokkaido runs Airport services between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo. Its Japanese guide describes six daytime departures per hour during the 09:00–16:00 hours: one Special Rapid, three Rapid and two Section Rapid services. It gives an approximate ten-minute interval for departures from the airport during that period, but your actual departure and train type depend on the timetable for your date. Use the station’s current departure information rather than relying only on the general frequency. (JR Hokkaido Airport information)

Domestic terminal→JR station→Fare→Platform and car→Sapporo
The domestic terminal and JR station are connected without going outside.

From the domestic terminal, JR says the airport station can be reached without going outside. New Chitose Airport also provides a dedicated JR access information page. If you arrive at the international terminal, follow the current airport signs and consult the airport’s access information; do not assume the route starts at the same place as it does for a domestic-terminal arrival.

A practical sequence is to follow the signs for JR, check the departure board for the Airport service going to Sapporo, then decide whether you will use an unreserved seat or buy a reserved-seat ticket as well as the fare. At the platform, check the signs for your train’s formation and the car you intend to board, since the usual arrangement can vary. After arriving at JR Sapporo Station, confirm the onward route to your accommodation rather than assuming the airport-to-Sapporo fare covers the rest of the trip.

JR’s Japanese guide says the service types are arranged so that the train departing first arrives first. That is useful general guidance, but an individual schedule or disruption may differ. Check current station notices and departure information on the day you travel, particularly if you are making a connection.

Unreserved and reserved seats

JR says unreserved seats do not require a reservation. In the usual formation, cars 1–3 and 5–6 are unreserved, and car 4 is reserved, but JR notes that the formation can vary and an unreserved car can be full. Check the signs for your particular train rather than treating the usual car arrangement as guaranteed. (JR Hokkaido English guide)

To use the reserved car, you need both the base fare and a reserved-seat ticket. JR says passengers without the required seat ticket cannot enter car 4, and the ¥1,230 fare quoted in this guide does not include a reserved seat. JR links to JR-EAST Train Reservation for online reserved-seat purchases; check the current seat price and purchase conditions there before deciding.

An electronic reserved-seat ticket by itself does not open the automatic ticket gate. JR instructs passengers to use a separate valid transport IC card or paper fare ticket for the gate, as applicable. Keep the two requirements distinct when preparing: the ticket or card for the basic fare and the ticket that gives you the reserved seat.

Paying the train fare

JR’s English guide lists Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and Kitaca among the transport IC cards that can be used. Its payment information says reserved-seat ticket machines and JR counters accept cash and cards, while ordinary fare-ticket machines accept cash only. The same explanation says QR-code payment is not supported at the machines and counters described. Check the equipment and payment notices at the station, since the information here reflects JR’s published guidance checked on 4 November 2026. (JR Hokkaido English guide)

If you buy a reserved-seat ticket online, review JR’s current instructions for how to use or present it, and separately decide how you will pay the basic fare. A reserved-seat electronic ticket alone is not a substitute for the fare at the gate. If you plan to leave the gated area partway through a journey and then re-enter, JR says a new ticket is required; treat a stop and re-entry as a separate ticketing question rather than assuming the original ticket remains valid.

For families and groups, check the fare and seat conditions for each traveller on the current booking or ticket-purchase screen. Compare the complete costs for your party only after checking those details.

Taking the airport bus

Hokuto Kotsu lists a one-way adult fare of ¥1,500 and a child fare of ¥750 for its Sapporo Station-front or Susukino service. Check the operator’s current route, stop and departure information for your travel date before choosing the bus. (Hokuto Kotsu Sapporo airport-bus information)

For two adults and one passenger eligible for the listed child fare, the published one-way bus fares add up to ¥3,750: ¥1,500 + ¥1,500 + ¥750. That total covers travel to a listed bus destination only; it does not include any further journey to the accommodation.

Hokuto Kotsu lists cash, supported contactless card payments and PayPay for payment aboard its bus, but says transport IC cards cannot be used. This differs from JR’s list of usable train IC cards. If you are relying on a particular payment method, confirm the current operator information rather than assuming the bus accepts the same cards as the railway.

New Chitose Airport lists the domestic-terminal bus counter on the first floor and the international-terminal transport information counter on the first floor. Follow current airport signs and ask at the relevant counter about the stop for your service. The airport’s transport information is a useful starting point, but the bus operator’s route and timetable are the information to check for the actual journey.

Hokuto Kotsu warns that road conditions or expressway closures can cause sudden bus cancellations. It says a stroller can be folded and carried aboard or placed in the luggage compartment; ask the operator about your particular baggage or access needs if you are unsure. Before travel, check the operator’s current notice, especially if you need to reach a connecting service or have limited flexibility.

Choosing the better option for your trip

Start with the specific address you need to reach, not just the name of the city. The train fare ends at Sapporo, and you may need a further journey from JR Sapporo Station. A listed bus service may suit a destination near its stop, but you still need to check the stop’s location, departure and any onward connection.

Your situation What to check before deciding
You have luggage The route from the train station or bus stop to your accommodation, and the operator’s current baggage information.
You want a reserved seat The additional seat-ticket cost, JR’s current purchase instructions and the formation of your particular train.
You are travelling with a stroller Hokuto Kotsu’s guidance says to fold it for the bus or place it in the luggage compartment; ask about your specific service and needs.
You arrive late Your actual arrival time, the current last suitable departure and the onward route.
You expect difficult weather Check both railway and bus notices. Road closures can affect buses, and general schedules do not guarantee operation on your day.
You plan to pay by IC card JR lists supported transport IC cards; Hokuto Kotsu says transport IC cards are not accepted on its airport bus.

If you are comparing a train and a bus for a particular flight, write down the arrival point, the service you could actually catch and the remaining route to your accommodation. The quoted fastest train time is not a door-to-door estimate, and the bus’s suitability depends on its stop and current operation. For an onward trip from Sapporo, check that leg separately; the airport fare does not by itself cover travel beyond its stated destination.

For wider planning, see the JGO! [Sapporo travel guide] and [Hokkaido travel guide]. If you are continuing to Otaru, compare the current onward route from Sapporo to Otaru rather than assuming the airport journey fare includes it. For the first city arrival, verify the transfer and onward connection independently.

Timetables, route changes and disruptions

The train and bus are operated separately, so check each operator’s own information. A road disruption can affect a bus differently from a railway disruption, and a general timetable or frequency description is not a guarantee that a service will run on your travel day. If you have a time-sensitive connection, check the relevant notices and identify a suitable alternative departure if one is available.

Hokkaido Chuo Bus announced that its central Sapporo airport services would be reorganised into three routes from 11 December 2026. The announcement is date-specific: use the information that applies to your own travel date, and do not treat the post-change arrangement as the timetable for an earlier journey. (Hokkaido Chuo Bus airport-route announcement)

Do not infer a final departure time from a general service description or from another traveller’s schedule. Check the current timetable and operator notices for your date, and allow for the onward journey after reaching Sapporo.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the train from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo?

JR lists a one-way fare of ¥1,230 between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo. This is the basic fare, not a reserved-seat supplement. If you want to sit in the reserved car, check the current additional seat-ticket price and the purchase conditions before travel. (JR Hokkaido Airport information; JR Hokkaido English guide)

How long does the train take?

JR lists a fastest time of 37 minutes for a Rapid service and lists other times for different Airport service types. Its Japanese information gives a fastest overall Special Rapid time of 33 minutes but a daytime Special Rapid figure of 36 minutes, while the English guide gives 33 minutes for daytime Special Rapid services. Check the timetable for the specific train you plan to take, and remember that the train time is not the complete journey from your aircraft to your hotel. (JR Hokkaido Japanese Airport information; JR Hokkaido English guide)

Do I need to reserve a train seat?

You do not need a reservation for an unreserved seat, according to JR, although an unreserved car can be full. In the usual formation, cars 1–3 and 5–6 are unreserved and car 4 is reserved, but the formation can vary. A reserved seat requires both the basic fare and a separate reserved-seat ticket; check the signs and current JR information for your particular train. (JR Hokkaido English guide)

Can I use an IC card on the bus?

Hokuto Kotsu says transport IC cards are not accepted on its airport bus. Its listed payment methods include cash, supported contactless card payments and PayPay, but check its current information if your plan depends on one of those methods. JR lists Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and Kitaca for the train, so do not assume that bus and train payment options are identical. (Hokuto Kotsu; JR Hokkaido English guide)

Can I use an online reserved-seat ticket at the automatic gate?

JR says a reserved-seat electronic ticket by itself cannot be used at the automatic ticket gate. Use a separate valid transport IC card or paper fare ticket for the gate, following JR’s current instructions. The reserved-seat ticket and the basic fare are separate requirements, so check both before entering the station. (JR Hokkaido English guide)

What should I do if my bus is affected by road conditions?

Hokuto Kotsu warns that road conditions or expressway closures can cause sudden cancellations. Check the operator’s current notices for your travel date and do not rely on the bus as a guaranteed connection when your schedule is time-sensitive.
