Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen Honkan are two useful starting points for planning a visit to Matsuyama. At the castle, the Honmaru square is free to enter, while access to the keep and the summit transport costs extra. At Dogo Onsen Honkan, bathing-only and seating courses have different prices and conditions, so it is worth choosing a course before you arrive.

This guide brings together published admission prices, operating hours and transport details checked on 4 November 2026. They are planning references, not a guarantee of conditions on your travel date: check the official pages for current notices, departures and availability.

Compare costs and hours

The costs below cover selected attractions and transport products, not a complete daily budget. Castle admission, summit transport and the Ninomaru Historical Garden are separate items, while Dogo Honkan offers several different courses. Use the table to identify the relevant published prices, then confirm the details for your date on the official pages.

Dogo Honkan Kami-no-yu downstairs Adult ¥700; ages 2–11 ¥350 Bathing only; 60 minutes; 06:00–23:00, last admission 22:30
Iyotetsu city tram and limousine 1Day ticket Adult ¥2,300; child ¥1,150 Digital ticket only; covers specified services

Prices and hours in the table are the published examples checked on 4 November 2026. Castle details are on the Matsuyama Castle visitor guide, Dogo Honkan course details are on the official Honkan page, and the pass conditions are on Iyotetsu’s 1Day ticket page. These pages are the appropriate places to check for changes before you travel.

Treat admission and transport as separate decisions. For example, the free Honmaru square does not include entry to the keep, and the castle’s ropeway or lift fare is separate from keep admission. Similarly, the 1Day ticket should be compared with the fares for the specific eligible rides you plan to make, rather than assumed to be the cheapest choice.

Matsuyama Castle: keep, summit transport and gardens

Matsuyama Castle’s Honmaru is on the summit of Mount Katsuyama, at an elevation of 132 metres. The castle lists the Honmaru square as free, but charges separately for the keep and for the ropeway or lift. The Ninomaru Historical Garden is another separately priced attraction, so consider which parts you want to visit when estimating the day’s cost. See the castle’s official visitor information for current admission and access details.

The keep normally opens from 09:00 to 17:00. Its listed closing time extends to 17:30 in August and is earlier, at 16:30, in December and January; last admission is 30 minutes before closing. The castle also lists a closure for major cleaning on the third Wednesday of December, so check the date as well as the seasonal schedule if your visit falls in that period.

Castle option Published price Planning details
Keep Adult ¥520; elementary-school child ¥160 Seasonal closing times; last entry 30 minutes before closing
Ropeway or lift, round trip Adult ¥520; child ¥260 Check which service is operating and current conditions
Ropeway or lift, one way Adult ¥270; child ¥140 Check current ticket details
Ninomaru Historical Garden Adult ¥200; elementary-school child ¥100 Separate attraction

The ropeway normally operates from 08:30 to 17:30, with service extending to 18:00 in August and ending at 17:00 in December and January. The lift is listed as operating from 08:30 to 17:00, but it is suspended in rain and is for elementary-school age and older. These are different services with different schedules; check the current operating status and the time of your intended return before choosing between them.

The castle suggests allowing about 30 minutes from the Shinonomeguchi station building to the keep ticket office. This is an access estimate, not a full estimate for viewing the keep, the grounds or making a return journey. The summit-side Chojagahira ticket window accepts cash only, according to the castle, so check which ticket you intend to buy and plan payment accordingly.

The castle’s Horinouchi area is listed as open around the clock throughout the year. That information applies to Horinouchi, not to the paid keep, whose opening hours and last-entry time are separate. Check the castle guide for the details that apply to each area rather than treating the castle grounds as one all-hours attraction.

Dogo Onsen Honkan: choose a course

Dogo Onsen Honkan offers several courses, and the price depends on which one you choose. The Kami-no-yu downstairs course is for bathing only: its published price is ¥700 for adults and ¥350 for children aged 2–11. It is listed as a 60-minute course, operating from 06:00 to 23:00 with last admission at 22:30. Confirm current conditions and availability on the official Dogo Onsen Honkan page before you go.

Dogo Honkan course Published adult / child price Planning detail
Kami-no-yu, downstairs ¥700 / ¥350 Bathing only; 60 minutes
Kami-no-yu, second-floor seating ¥1,300 / ¥650 Check current course inclusions and availability
Tama-no-yu, second-floor seating ¥2,000 / ¥1,000 Check current course inclusions and availability
Tama-no-yu, third-floor private room ¥2,500 / ¥1,250 Rest room; it does not contain a bath

The course names and prices are useful for comparing options, but do not assume that a higher-priced course includes a private bath. The third-floor private room is a room for rest, not a private bathing tub. If privacy, accessibility, tattoos, towels or a particular room is important to your group, contact the facility to confirm the relevant conditions before choosing.

The operator lists the enquiry number as 089-921-5141. The Honkan was designated an Important Cultural Property in December 1994, and its preservation repair work was completed on 20 December 2024. Those details provide context for the building, but they do not replace checking current course information and operating notices for your visit.

Getting between the airport, stations and Dogo

Iyotetsu lists a direct airport limousine bus from Matsuyama Airport to Dogo Onsen Station front, with an approximate journey time of 40 minutes. Check the actual departure and destination shown for your trip on Iyotetsu’s Dogo access page. The estimate is a planning guide, not a guarantee of the time required on a particular day.

From JR Matsuyama Station, Iyotetsu describes a city tram to Dogo without a transfer. Be careful to distinguish JR Matsuyama Station from Matsuyama-shi Station, which is a different stop. When checking a route or selecting a bus destination, use the full station name so you do not plan around the wrong departure point.

Iyotetsu’s published adult airport limousine fares, checked on 4 November 2026, differ by destination and payment method:

Airport limousine destination Adult cash fare Specified cashless fare
JR Matsuyama Station front ¥1,000 ¥980
Matsuyama-shi Station ¥1,000 ¥980
Okaido ¥1,200 ¥1,180
Dogo Onsen Station front ¥1,200 ¥1,180

The listed ¥20 cashless difference applies to specified eligible methods, including nationally interoperable transport IC cards and the Mikyan app. Iyotetsu lists child fares as half the adult fare, rounded up to the next ¥10. The operator also says that commuter and silver commuter passes cannot be used on the limousine, and that group discounts do not apply. Confirm the fare and accepted payment method at purchase using the official airport limousine information.

Is the city tram and limousine 1Day ticket useful?

Iyotetsu lists its city tram and limousine 1Day ticket at ¥2,300 for adults and ¥1,150 for children. It is digital only; no paper version is sold. The ticket covers all city tram lines except the Botchan Train, as well as the specified airport and sightseeing-port limousine buses. Its Kururin Ferris wheel benefit applies to ordinary gondolas, not see-through gondolas. Check the official ticket page for current purchase instructions and conditions.

The ticket is not described as a pass for every ordinary bus route. In particular, do not assume that a city tram and limousine ticket covers any bus simply because it operates in Matsuyama. Check whether each ride you intend to take is included before comparing costs.

To decide whether the pass suits your day, add the current fares for the eligible rides you actually expect to make and compare that total with the ticket price. Also check the valid-day conditions and eligible payment or purchase methods on Iyotetsu’s current page. A pass can simplify payment for included services, but its value depends on your itinerary; it is not automatically a saving for every visitor.

Plan a practical visit

Start by checking the attraction whose last-entry time has the greatest effect on your plan. The castle keep has seasonal closing times and last admission 30 minutes before closing, while the listed downstairs Dogo Honkan course has last admission at 22:30. These schedules make it sensible to verify the castle’s hours for your month before deciding when to fit in other stops.

Next, check the transport for the specific points you will use. For an airport arrival, compare the limousine destinations and fares with your final stop; for a journey from JR Matsuyama Station, check the city tram connection to Dogo. Keep JR Matsuyama Station and Matsuyama-shi Station distinct in your notes, and confirm your return as well as your outward journey.

Use the official pages to confirm the details most likely to affect your plans:

Allow for your own walking, waiting and bathing time between stops; the published access estimate from Shinonomeguchi to the keep ticket office does not include the full visit. Check those separately rather than treating a sample schedule or published attraction price as a complete trip budget.

For wider planning, JGO! also has guides to Dogo Onsen, Ehime Prefecture and things to do in Ehime. Use them as starting points for choosing other places to visit, then check each venue’s own hours and conditions. A suggested itinerary or linked guide cannot guarantee a current transport connection or reservation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matsuyama Castle free?

The Honmaru square is free, but the keep is not. The published keep price is ¥520 for adults and ¥160 for elementary-school children, and the ropeway or lift is priced separately. Check the castle visitor guide for current hours, access and ticket information.

Does the Dogo Honkan third-floor private room have a bath?

No. The operator describes the third-floor private room as a room for rest, without a bath. Its published price is ¥2,500 for adults and ¥1,250 for children, but confirm current course conditions and availability with the Honkan before deciding.

Is there a direct bus from Matsuyama Airport to Dogo Onsen?

Iyotetsu lists a direct limousine bus to Dogo Onsen Station front, with an approximate journey time of 40 minutes. The published adult fare is ¥1,200 in cash or ¥1,180 with specified eligible cashless methods, checked on 4 November 2026. Check the operator’s access and limousine information for your actual departure and fare.

Does the 1Day ticket cover all buses in Matsuyama?

No. The listed ticket covers city trams except the Botchan Train, plus specified airport and sightseeing-port limousine buses; it is not described as covering all ordinary bus routes. Check the eligible services and current conditions on Iyotetsu’s 1Day ticket page before buying.

Can I take the castle lift in the rain?

The castle says that the lift is suspended in rainy weather. Check the current operating status of both the lift and ropeway before travelling, since the services have different schedules and conditions. The castle guide also lists seasonal hours and ticket details.

Visitor video perspectives

These existing visitor videos offer different ways to see Matsuyama, including its castle, hot springs and regional connections.
