The Japan Rail Pass can save money on a trip with several long JR journeys packed into one pass period. For a single Tokyo–Osaka round trip, however, regular tickets are usually the better starting point.

For example, an adult taking a regular-season Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka and back pays ¥29,440 in standard reserved-seat fares. A 7-day Ordinary pass bought online costs ¥50,000, and taking Nozomi adds ¥4,960 each way: a total of ¥59,920 for the same two rides. Regular tickets cost ¥30,480 less in this example. (jr-central.co.jp)

The comparison changes if you add more long-distance rides or take pass-covered trains such as Hikari and Sakura. Here’s how to calculate it for your own route.

Japan Rail Pass prices and eligibility

The nationwide pass is available for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, in Ordinary class or Green Car class. Ordinary is the standard class; Green Car is the more spacious option.

The official price table lists different prices for online purchases and exchange orders bought through overseas agencies. All prices below are in yen. (japanrailpass.net)

Pass Traveller 7 days 14 days 21 days
Ordinary, online Adult ¥50,000 ¥80,000 ¥100,000
Ordinary, online Child ¥25,000 ¥40,000 ¥50,000
Ordinary, overseas agency Adult ¥53,000 ¥84,000 ¥105,000
Ordinary, overseas agency Child ¥27,000 ¥42,000 ¥53,000
Green, online Adult ¥70,000 ¥110,000 ¥140,000
Green, online Child ¥35,000 ¥55,000 ¥70,000
Green, overseas agency Adult ¥74,000 ¥116,000 ¥147,000
Green, overseas agency Child ¥37,000 ¥58,000 ¥74,000

For pass pricing, children are generally aged 6–11. A child who is 11 on the online payment date or exchange-order issue date can still use a child pass after turning 12. For two adults and one child, three 7-day Ordinary passes cost ¥125,000 online, compared with ¥133,000 through an overseas agency. (japanrailpass.net)

Most international visitors qualify when they enter Japan with Temporary Visitor status. Japanese nationals living abroad have a separate eligibility route, including documentation of at least 10 consecutive years of overseas residence; they cannot use the official online purchase service. Read the eligibility requirements before choosing a purchase channel. (japanrailpass.net)

Choose the start date around your longest rides

The pass covers consecutive calendar days, not a selectable number of separate travel days. If a 7-day pass starts on a Monday, its final day is Sunday. A trip that begins and ends with several days of sightseeing in Tokyo may work better with the pass starting on the day you leave the city, rather than on your arrival day.

The longer pass has a lower daily price, but the total still has to make sense: an online Ordinary adult pass works out to approximately ¥7,143 per day for seven days or ¥4,762 per day for 21 days. Count the journeys you will actually take during that period.

What the pass covers—and when you pay extra

An Ordinary Japan Rail Pass covers eligible JR local, rapid, limited express and Shinkansen services, including Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and Tsubame, without an additional Nozomi/Mizuho special ticket. It also covers the Tokyo Monorail, the JR West Miyajima Ferry and certain JR local buses. Expressway buses are excluded, and a ¥100 Miyajima visitor tax is payable when visiting the island. (japanrailpass.net)

Some JR trains run onto tracks owned by other railway companies. Those non-JR sections can require an additional fare, so include them when pricing a route. Subways and most non-JR railways are separate from the nationwide pass.

Nozomi and Mizuho: the extra ticket

To take a Nozomi or Mizuho, a nationwide pass holder must buy the Nozomi/Mizuho special ticket before boarding. The following are the official one-way prices for the listed sections. (japanrailpass.net)

Route Special ticket, one way
Tokyo–Nagoya ¥4,180
Tokyo–Kyoto ¥4,960
Tokyo–Shin-Osaka ¥4,960
Tokyo–Hiroshima ¥6,500
Shin-Osaka–Hakata ¥4,960
Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo ¥5,150

For a reserved seat, the special ticket is sold for a particular train. If you change from one Nozomi or Mizuho to another, price the tickets for the trains and sections you will actually use. An Ordinary pass holder can buy Ordinary-car tickets; a Green pass holder can also buy a Green Car ticket. The listed special-ticket price is the same across those seat categories.

Buy the special ticket at a JR reserved-seat machine, ticket office, travel centre or participating agency. Sales open one month before travel and continue through the travel day. For a return journey, add the applicable ticket in each direction. (japanrailpass.net)

Hikari or Nozomi?

For Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, JR Central Tours gives approximate journey times of 2 hours 30 minutes on Nozomi, 3 hours on Hikari and 4 hours on Kodama. The time varies by departure. A Hikari can be an attractive choice for a pass holder: it takes longer than Nozomi, but needs no special ticket. (travel.jr-central.co.jp)

On longer journeys, check the full itinerary rather than only the first train name. For example, a pass-covered Tokyo–Hiroshima trip can involve a Hikari to Shin-Osaka, followed by a Sakura or another covered service towards Hiroshima. Allow time to change platforms and reserve both trains if you want reserved seats. (global.jr-central.co.jp)

Tokyo–Osaka: the break-even math

A regular Shinkansen ticket has two components: the basic fare and the limited-express charge. For a regular-season, one-way adult Nozomi trip from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka in an Ordinary reserved seat, the JR fare example is: (westjr.co.jp)

Component One way
Basic fare ¥8,910
Nozomi reserved-seat limited-express charge ¥5,810
Regular-ticket total ¥14,720

A nationwide pass holder taking that Nozomi instead pays the pass price plus a ¥4,960 special ticket. Do not add the ordinary ¥8,910 basic fare and ¥5,810 express charge again to the pass-side calculation. (japanrailpass.net)

The next table compares the same Nozomi journeys on both sides, using the 7-day online Ordinary adult pass and regular-season fares.

Tokyo–Shin-Osaka round trips Regular tickets Pass plus special tickets Cheaper option
1 ¥29,440 ¥59,920 Regular tickets by ¥30,480
2 ¥58,880 ¥69,840 Regular tickets by ¥10,960
3 ¥88,320 ¥79,760 Pass by ¥8,560

Under these assumptions, three Nozomi round trips within seven days make the pass cheaper. The threshold is specific to this route and service: each round trip adds ¥29,440 to the regular-ticket total but only ¥9,920 in special tickets to the pass total.

Hikari produces different math. JR Central Tours lists a regular-season Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Hikari reserved-seat fare of ¥14,400 one way. Two such round trips cost ¥57,600 in regular tickets, versus ¥50,000 for the 7-day online Ordinary pass, with no Nozomi special tickets. That saves ¥7,600 on the pass side for those rides. (travel.jr-central.co.jp)

A fare change for 2027 bookings

JR Central and JR West have announced that the regular-season adult Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi reserved-seat price will rise from ¥14,720 to ¥15,420 one way for tickets purchased from 1 July 2027. Use the fare applicable to your purchase when calculating a future trip. (jr-central.co.jp)

Sample routes: compare both sides

These planning examples use adult Ordinary-class prices. The Nozomi regular fares are for reserved seats in the regular season; the pass is the ¥50,000 online 7-day pass. They compare only the rides shown, so add any other covered JR journeys you plan to make during the same week.

Seven-day itinerary Regular Nozomi tickets Pass plus Nozomi special tickets Difference
Tokyo–Nagoya return ¥22,600 ¥58,360 Regular tickets save ¥35,760
Tokyo–Shin-Osaka return ¥29,440 ¥59,920 Regular tickets save ¥30,480
Tokyo–Hiroshima return ¥39,520 ¥63,000 Regular tickets save ¥23,480

The JR Central and JR West fare announcement lists the underlying one-way Nozomi fares of ¥11,300 to Nagoya, ¥14,720 to Shin-Osaka and ¥19,760 to Hiroshima. The pass-side totals use the special-ticket prices above. (jr-central.co.jp)

A Tokyo–Kyoto return on Nozomi adds ¥9,920 in special tickets to the pass price, making the pass-side total ¥59,920 before other rides. For a pass-covered alternative, look for Hikari services to Kyoto and compare their regular fares with the same itinerary.

A one-way journey to Kyushu

For a seven-day trip with these separate legs:

  1. Tokyo → Shin-Osaka
  2. Shin-Osaka → Hakata
  3. Hakata → Kagoshima-Chuo

Taking a Nozomi or Mizuho on each leg adds ¥4,960 + ¥4,960 + ¥5,150 = ¥15,070 in special tickets. The pass-side total is ¥65,070. Alternatively, plan the legs on covered services such as Hikari, Sakura and Tsubame; the pass-side total for those rides remains ¥50,000. Compare each version with regular tickets for the same trains. (japanrailpass.net)

Make your own comparison

Write down each travel day, station pair and train type. Then calculate:

Use the JR Central fare information and the relevant operator’s booking service for your trains. Compare the same class, dates and routes on both sides; a discounted advance-purchase ticket can produce a different result from a standard fare. (global.jr-central.co.jp)

Regional passes and regular tickets to consider

A nationwide pass is not the only way to combine long-distance rides. A regional pass can be especially useful when most of your travel is west of Osaka.

Option Adult price Best fit
Regular Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi tickets ¥29,440 return One regular-season return trip
Nationwide Ordinary pass, online ¥50,000 for 7 days Several long JR rides across regions
Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass ¥17,000 for 5 days Kansai, Okayama, Hiroshima and Miyajima
Sanyo–San’in Area Pass ¥23,000 for 7 days Kansai through Hiroshima to Hakata, plus parts of San’in

The two JR West passes include Ordinary reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen within their respective areas, including Nozomi and Mizuho. The Kansai–Hiroshima pass covers the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima; the Sanyo–San’in pass extends that Shinkansen coverage to Hakata. Neither covers the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka. Both include the JR West Miyajima Ferry. (westjr.co.jp)

For example, a traveller could buy a regular-season Hikari ticket from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka and back for ¥28,800, then use the ¥17,000 Kansai–Hiroshima pass for five consecutive days of eligible western Japan travel. The combined ticket cost would be ¥45,800, compared with ¥50,000 for a nationwide 7-day Ordinary pass. Place the western Japan rides inside the regional pass period, and add any travel outside its area. (travel.jr-central.co.jp)

For stand-alone Shinkansen tickets, SmartEX is worth comparing with station prices. Its advance-purchase products have their own availability and conditions, so compare the actual departure you want rather than assuming the standard fare is the lowest available. (smart-ex.jp)

How to buy, collect and reserve seats

Buy online

The official Japan Rail Pass online purchase service accepts credit cards in the purchaser’s name. Enter each traveller’s name and passport details; one buyer can purchase for up to six accompanying eligible travellers. The service operates from 4:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Japan time. (japanrailpass.net)

Online buyers can reserve eligible Shinkansen and limited-express seats on the pass reservation website before arriving. Pick up the pass and reserved-seat tickets before boarding. At a designated JR office, bring the booking number and each traveller’s passport with the Temporary Visitor stamp or sticker. Some JR East and JR West reserved-seat machines also issue passes. (japanrailpass.net)

Buy through an overseas agency

A designated overseas agency sells an exchange order, which you exchange for the actual pass in Japan. Bring the order and passport to an exchange office. The order must be exchanged within three months of issue, and exchange can begin one month before the chosen start date. For example, an order issued on April 15 must be exchanged by July 14. (japanrailpass.net)

Allow time at the office, particularly after an international flight or during a holiday. The pass type cannot be changed after the exchange order is issued.

Reserve for busy dates and large luggage

Reserve early for holiday travel. All Nozomi services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen are designated reserved-seat-only from 25 December 2026 through 5 January 2027. Hikari and Kodama can also be crowded during peak periods, making a reservation useful even when your train is covered by the pass. (jr-central.co.jp)

If your baggage’s three dimensions total more than 160 cm, reserve an appropriate oversized-baggage seat or space on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Tell staff when booking so they can match the reservation to your train. (global.jr-central.co.jp)

Japan Rail Pass FAQ

Is the pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?

For one return journey between Tokyo and Kansai, start by pricing regular tickets. The Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi example costs ¥29,440 return, while the 7-day pass plus two special tickets costs ¥59,920. Add your other JR rides before making the final comparison.

Can I use the pass on Nozomi?

Yes, with the required Nozomi/Mizuho special ticket bought before boarding. The Tokyo–Shin-Osaka special ticket costs ¥4,960 one way. Hikari is an alternative on that route that does not require this ticket. (japanrailpass.net)

Can I reserve a seat before arriving in Japan?

Yes, if you bought the nationwide pass through the official online service. After purchase, use the same service to reserve eligible Shinkansen and limited-express seats, then collect the pass and seat tickets before boarding. (japanrailpass.net)

Does the pass cover the Miyajima ferry?

It covers the JR West Miyajima Ferry between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima. The ¥100 visitor tax is separate. Other ferry operators are not covered by that provision. (japanrailpass.net)

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are generally available before the pass start date. For an online purchase, cancel any issued seat reservations first. The official conditions list a ¥560 handling fee per pass for an online-purchased pass; an already exchanged agency pass has different refund terms, including a 10% handling fee. An unexchanged order must be taken back to the agency where it was bought. (japanrailpass.net)
