Japan Kimono Rental: Plans, Returns and a Kyoto Example

For a Japan kimono rental, choose the return method before planning the day’s sightseeing. The rental price is only one part of the decision: you also need time to select clothes and get dressed, and a different return location or next-day return can add charges or requirements. The detailed example in this guide is Rental Kimono Okamoto in Kyoto; its prices and rules are not a nationwide standard.

At Okamoto, allow about one to one and a half hours for choosing clothes, dressing, hair styling and getting ready to leave. Waiting can occur even when you have a reservation, so leave a buffer before any timed sightseeing booking. These estimates and the other operator-specific details below were checked against the linked official information on 4 November 2026. Okamoto’s English FAQ describes the preparation time and possibility of waiting.

Compare Okamoto’s published plans

The prices below are published before tax. Keep that qualification when comparing them with another shop’s quote, and ask for the full amount for the plan, extras and return method you intend to use. These are Okamoto prices in Kyoto, not a comparison of rental shops across Japan. See Okamoto’s plan page for the operator’s published options.

Shop appointment→Choose kimono→Dressing→Sightseeing→Return deadline
The appointment is the start of preparation, not the start of sightseeing.
Kimono plan→Obi and bag→Tabi and zori→Dressing→Optional services
Check the plan and return fee together.
Plan Published price before tax Practical point
Set Plan ¥2,980 Check the selection and fit available for your booking.
Select Plan ¥3,980 A distinct named plan, not a national category.
Full Outfit Plan ¥4,980 Confirm that this is the plan you want when booking.
Nagoya Obi Plan ¥5,980 A named plan associated with a Nagoya obi.
Yukata plan From ¥3,980 Set contents differ in part, and seasonal availability applies.

Okamoto says its kimono plans include an obi, a small drawstring bag, tabi socks, zori footwear and dressing service. Yukata set contents differ in part, so do not assume that everything included with a kimono plan is included with a yukata plan. If you have seen particular accessories in a photograph or video, check the selected plan’s booking details rather than treating the image as a list of included items.

The yukata price is published as starting from ¥3,980 before tax. Okamoto’s Japanese FAQ describes yukata rental as available from June through September; this seasonal information does not mean that kimono rental is limited to those months. Check the operator’s current information for your date and ask about the specific clothing you want. The plan page and Japanese FAQ are the relevant places to confirm these details.

The FAQ also describes dedicated options for people over 170 cm, wider sizes and smaller sizes. That is useful when deciding whether to contact the shop before booking, but it does not confirm that a particular garment or size will be available on your date or fit an individual. If size affects your choice, raise it with the shop rather than relying on a general plan name or a creator’s video.

A useful way to compare plans is to separate the published base price from everything that depends on your circumstances. The figures in the table are before tax, and the return method may have a separate charge; the plan page does not make those amounts a guaranteed all-in total. Before paying, confirm the plan name, any extras you want and the return arrangement together.

Choose the return method before planning your route

Returning to the same shop on the same day has no return-service fee, but the published deadline is 17:50. The operator’s dedicated return page also lists paid alternatives, including return to another shop, next-day return and hotel return. There is a discrepancy to resolve: the English FAQ says another-shop return is unavailable in its standard explanation, while the dedicated page offers it for a fee. Ask Okamoto to confirm the specific arrangement before planning a one-way route. Check the return page and English FAQ before relying on an alternative.

Same shop · 17:50→Other shop · apply by 13:00→Next day · 17:00→Hotel · 09:00
Confirm any alternative return before planning a one-way route.
Return method Published condition Timing or requirement
Same shop, same day No return-service fee Return by 17:50.
Different shop From ¥1,000 per person; ¥1,500 when Arashiyama is involved Apply by 13:00 that day; return to the designated shop between 17:00 and 17:50. Confirm availability because of the FAQ discrepancy.
Next day Listed fee: ¥1,000 Return by 17:00 the next day; bring identification and a ¥10,000 cash deposit.
Hotel return Kyoto City accommodation only; one person: ¥2,000 before tax; two people: ¥1,500 per person before tax Return to reception by 09:00 the following morning. Some accommodation types are excluded.

The source does not specify the tax treatment of every return fee in the table, so do not assume that an amount with no tax label is a tax-inclusive total. Ask the shop what you will pay for your specific arrangement. Keep the next-day ¥10,000 cash deposit separate from the listed ¥1,000 service fee when asking how much money to bring.

Hotel return has additional conditions. It is limited to people staying at accommodation in Kyoto City, and the operator says some places, including accommodation without a front desk, cannot use the service. A Kyoto City address alone does not establish eligibility. Give the shop the actual accommodation name, confirm that the arrangement is available, and check the return process with the front desk before building your plans around it.

The return page also lists a ¥1,000 charge per additional large item of luggage. Ask about your bags in advance instead of assuming the appointment includes unlimited luggage storage. When comparing return methods, consider the return deadline and any required collection or handover as part of the day’s schedule, not as details to settle after sightseeing.

The 17:50 same-day deadline is a return deadline, not the shop’s closing time. The main shop lists hours of 09:00–18:00, so a plan to arrive at closing would miss the earlier return cutoff. If you choose another return method, follow the conditions confirmed by the operator rather than applying the same-shop deadline automatically.

Book the appointment and allow time to get ready

For an ordinary booking, use the operator’s reservation form through its booking and visit-flow information. Groups are directed to the enquiry form or telephone. The FAQ says same-day use depends on reservation availability and describes telephone enquiries and same-day online bookings; this is not a guarantee that a walk-in visitor will find an open dressing slot. Payment is made at the shop. Okamoto’s FAQ has the operator’s same-day and payment information.

Appointment→Choose clothing→Dressing and preparation · about 1–1.5 hours→Sightseeing
Allow the operator's preparation time before your next booking.

A practical booking sequence is:

  1. Open the official reservation route and select the shop and date.
  2. Choose the requested plan, keeping its before-tax price in view.
  3. Contact the shop about size or another individual requirement if it affects your choice.
  4. Confirm the return method, especially if you want to return somewhere other than the shop you visit.
  5. Arrive for the appointment, choose your kimono at the shop and then get dressed.
  6. Keep the confirmed return instructions available while you are out.

The operator’s stated preparation estimate is about one to one and a half hours for selecting clothes, dressing, hair styling and getting ready to leave. Even a reserved appointment can involve waiting, so avoid scheduling a timed activity immediately after the appointment. The estimate is for the preparation process, not a promise that every visitor will be ready at an exact time.

After dressing, you may ask staff to take a free photograph using your own camera or smartphone. This offer is not the same as a professional photo package, and it does not establish that a separate photography service is included in the rental plan. If you want a particular photography service, ask the operator what it covers and whether there is a charge.

Keep the return decision in view when choosing an appointment time. A later start leaves less time before the 17:50 same-shop deadline, while an alternative method has its own conditions and may need advance confirmation. For other practical travel planning, the existing JGO! guides to cash and cards, Japan buses and budget travel cover related topics; the rental appointment and the operator’s confirmed return instructions remain the constraints specific to this booking.

Reach Okamoto’s main shop

Okamoto’s main shop is at 546-8 Gojo-bashi Higashi 6-chome, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto. The operator publishes opening hours of 09:00–18:00 and says the shop operates year-round. Confirm that your reservation names the main shop before following directions, because the brand has more than one shop and an appointment at another location would require different directions. See the main-shop information.

Main shop · 546-8→Gojozaka · about 5 min walk→Kiyomizu-Gojo · about 15 min walk→Return by 17:50
Match the map to the booked shop.

The operator gives the following walking estimates: about five minutes from Gojozaka bus stop and about 15 minutes from Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo Station. You can use this Google Maps search for Okamoto’s main shop to orient yourself, then check the exact appointment address against your booking. The estimates are for reaching the shop; they do not include time to select clothes, get dressed or return the rental later.

There is no dedicated car park for the main shop. The operator points drivers to nearby paid parking, so allow for parking and the walk from it rather than treating the parking space as part of the shop premises. If you are driving, include that time as well as the preparation estimate when deciding when you can leave for sightseeing.

Remember that the shop’s published closing time and the same-day return deadline are different. The shop is listed as open until 18:00, but same-day rental return is due by 17:50. Use the earlier return time for your plan unless the operator has confirmed a different method for your booking.

Changes, rain and traveller videos

Okamoto’s Japanese FAQ says cancellation is free until 13:00 on the day before the booking and lists a ¥3,300 cancellation fee after that point. Confirm the terms that apply to your own reservation and booking channel before relying on them. A change to your sightseeing plans does not itself change your rental appointment or return arrangement. Read the Japanese FAQ for the published cancellation information.

The same FAQ says the operator does not charge cleaning costs for ordinary dirt caused by rain. It also says that compensation may be required depending on the severity of soiling or damage. Keep those points distinct: the ordinary-rain cleaning statement is not permission to damage the rental, and it does not guarantee that every kind of stain or damage will be free of charge.

Videos can help show what a rental visit or a day wearing a kimono may look like, but they are not a current price list or confirmation of today’s booking terms. The creator examples associated with this guide are:

A creator’s visit does not establish current stock, size availability, prices or the conditions at the shop you choose. Use the videos for general context, then confirm the actual plan, appointment and return terms with the operator. This is particularly important for the other-shop return option, where Okamoto’s English FAQ and dedicated return page do not give the same standard explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return the rental to a different shop?

The operator’s dedicated return page lists paid other-shop return, while its English FAQ says that this option is unavailable in the standard explanation. The return page lists a charge from ¥1,000 per person, or ¥1,500 when Arashiyama is involved, and says to apply by 13:00 that day and return to the designated shop between 17:00 and 17:50. Because the sources differ, ask the shop to confirm the specific locations, availability and timing before choosing a one-way sightseeing route.

Is the advertised plan the complete price?

The plan prices in this guide are published before tax, so they are not a tax-inclusive total. Ask the operator for the amount for your selected plan, any extras and your return method, and confirm the tax treatment of charges whose tax status is not specified. For next-day return, ask about the ¥1,000 listed fee and keep the separate ¥10,000 cash deposit in mind.

Can I rent without a reservation?

Okamoto says same-day use depends on reservation availability and describes telephone enquiries and same-day online bookings. That means a same-day booking may be possible, not that a walk-in visitor is guaranteed an available appointment. Use the operator’s booking or enquiry route to check before going to the shop.

How much time should I allow before sightseeing?

Allow about one to one and a half hours for choosing clothes, dressing, hair styling and preparing to leave, according to the operator’s FAQ. Waiting can still occur even when you have a reservation, so leave extra room before a timed booking. Plan the return deadline separately from the time needed to get ready.

Is yukata rental available all year?

Okamoto’s Japanese FAQ describes yukata rental as available from June through September. That seasonal statement applies to the operator’s yukata information and should not be read as a restriction on kimono rental. Confirm the available clothing and the plan for your actual date with the shop.

Does rain automatically mean a cleaning charge?

Okamoto says it does not charge cleaning costs for ordinary dirt caused by rain. The operator also says compensation may apply depending on the severity of soiling or damage. If you are concerned about a particular kind of damage or stain, ask the shop rather than treating the ordinary-rain policy as a guarantee for every situation.
