Japan eSIM Guide 2026: How to Choose and Activate One
Contents
A Japan eSIM gives a compatible phone mobile data without swapping a physical SIM card. It is useful for looking up train routes, translating menus, finding your hotel and messaging people while you are away from Wi-Fi.
Two visitor options are povo Japan SIM, which you can apply for online before departure, and IIJ Japan Travel SIM/Digital, sold through FamilyMart copy machines in Japan. Both are data-only: they do not provide a Japanese number for ordinary calls or SMS. (iij.ad.jp)
Which Japan eSIM should you choose?
| Your trip or preference | A practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to install an eSIM before flying | povo Japan SIM online | Apply and download the profile before arriving. |
| You prefer to buy after arriving | IIJ at FamilyMart | Select a plan on a store copy machine and pay at the register. |
| You are visiting for three to seven days | povo online | Its fixed-data options include plans for three, five and seven days. |
| You expect to use a lot of data over a longer trip | IIJ or a povo unlimited bundle | IIJ lists allowances up to 55GB; povo offers time-limited unlimited bundles. |
| You need a Japanese number for calls or SMS | Look beyond these two products | Both are data-only. |
For either product, the first purchase decision is your phone: it needs to be unlocked, eSIM-compatible and suitable for the provider’s network. Then compare the data allowance and when its validity begins. (iijmio.jp)
Check your phone before buying
Is it unlocked?
A carrier-locked phone may only accept service from the carrier that supplied it. Ask your home carrier about unlocking if you are unsure.
On an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then About. Apple says an unlocked iPhone displays “No SIM restrictions” beside Carrier Lock. Only your carrier can unlock it for use with another carrier. (support.apple.com)
Does it support the provider’s eSIM?
Look up your exact model and the region where you bought it on the manufacturer’s site. Google’s Pixel eSIM guide, for example, explains that support varies for some older Pixel models according to their purchase country or seller. (support.google.com)
Next, look at the provider’s device requirements. povo’s compatibility page asks for an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device that works with KDDI’s 4G or 5G bands. It also provides APN guidance for Android. IIJ requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone and separate APN setup. (povo.jp)
If you intend to keep your home line active for bank verification messages, also check whether your phone can use that line alongside the new eSIM and ask your home carrier about Japan roaming charges.
Check the technical conformity mark
Japan’s technical conformity mark, often called giteki, applies to the phone’s radio equipment. povo’s device guidance explains how to check its requirements and points to Japanese government information about applicable rules. Review the conditions for your device and connection method before choosing a service. (povo.jp)
Compare plans and prices
povo Japan SIM online
The following tax-inclusive online prices are listed on povo’s individual product pages. Each fixed-data pack applies immediately after purchase, so purchase timing matters. (povo.jp)
For a short city break, the 3GB or 5GB pack is a starting point if you mainly use maps, messaging and occasional browsing. For a week with more frequent searches and photo uploads, compare the seven-day 10GB pack with the 30-day 20GB pack: the latter costs more, but gives you more time and data.
povo also lists unlimited-data bundles in its Japan SIM plan announcement:
| Bundle | Price, including tax |
|---|---|
| Unlimited for 6 hours plus 0.5GB for 60 days | ¥260 |
| Unlimited for 3 days plus 0.5GB for 60 days | ¥1,540 |
| Unlimited for 5 days plus 0.5GB for 60 days | ¥2,510 |
| Unlimited for 7 days plus 0.5GB for 60 days | ¥3,390 |
The 0.5GB portion applies immediately after purchase. The unlimited portion is provided as a promotional code, so you can redeem it when needed; povo recommends redeeming the seven-day code after arriving in Japan. Network congestion can affect speeds. (povo.jp)
Without an active data pack, povo says its maximum data speed is 128kbps. Its online product also states that purchases are not refundable or reissued, so check your phone and the selected pack before paying. (povo.jp)
IIJ Japan Travel SIM/Digital at FamilyMart
IIJ’s FamilyMart announcement lists the following prices for its 30-day plans. IIJ describes these as tax-free prices, not prices before tax. (iij.ad.jp)
| Data | Price |
|---|---|
| 3GB | ¥2,480 |
| 6GB | ¥2,980 |
| 10GB | ¥3,280 |
| 15GB | ¥3,480 |
| 25GB | ¥4,580 |
| 35GB | ¥4,980 |
| 55GB | ¥5,780 |
The 30-day period begins on the first communication date, and IIJ says extra data can be added. The service follows NTT docomo’s 4G LTE coverage; the 3G service mentioned in IIJ’s announcement ended on March 31, 2026. (iijmio.jp)
A 30-day IIJ plan can be convenient for a longer stay when you prefer to pay in a store. Compare the amount you expect to use, rather than just the number of days: the difference between 15GB and 25GB, for instance, is ¥1,100 in IIJ’s published table.
How to buy and activate your eSIM
povo: apply online before departure
The povo Japan SIM online page gives registration and installation instructions. You need to be at least 18 and have a credit card, email address, internet connection and a separate voice line capable of receiving the verification SMS. A photo ID is not required for this online application. (povo.jp)
- Open the povo online page and choose Sign Up / Sign In.
- Register with your email address and enter the verification details requested.
- Use a phone number from an eligible country or area for SMS authentication. The United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom are among those listed.
- Follow the instructions to download the eSIM profile while connected to Wi-Fi.
- Choose and purchase a data pack, paying attention to when it starts.
- On arrival, enable the Japan SIM line and select it for mobile data in your phone’s settings.
The eligible-country list concerns the number used for verification; the Japan SIM data service itself is for use in Japan. If you plan to register after landing, make sure your home number can receive the verification SMS there. (povo.jp)
Installing the profile and starting a data pack are different steps. In particular, a fixed-data pack purchased too early may use up part of its validity before your flight. For a code-based unlimited bundle, keep the email containing the code accessible for use during the trip.
IIJ: buy at FamilyMart
Bring your phone, an email address and a way to connect to the internet for registration. IIJ’s FamilyMart purchase guide shows the copy-machine screens in English. (t.iijmio.jp)
- Find a FamilyMart with a multi-function copy machine.
- Select English, then follow the prepaid-card and mobile-communications menus to Japan Travel SIM.
- Select your desired plan and take the printed payment slip to the register.
- Pay and keep the paper containing your entry code.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or another internet service, then use the code and your email address to register on IIJ’s site.
- Download and install the eSIM profile.
- Enable the new line and enter the APN settings supplied in IIJ’s instructions.
An APN is the phone’s access-point setting for the mobile network. If the eSIM appears on your phone but data does not work, return to IIJ’s setup instructions and check that step before changing other settings. (iij.ad.jp)
IIJ lists support in English, Japanese and Chinese at 03-5205-4999, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Japan time, every day. Keep your entry-code paper and device details ready when you contact the support center. (iijmio.jp)
Buying povo at Lawson
povo also sells a separate Japan SIM gift-card product at Lawson stores that handle the cards. The gift-card instructions describe cash payment, followed by registration using the card’s QR code and PIN. You will also need an email address and a phone number for SMS verification. (povo.jp)
Ask the cashier for the plan shown on the card or purchase screen. The Lawson product has a different lineup from the online Japan SIM, so compare the displayed allowance and validity with your trip before paying. (newsroom.kddi.com)
Using your eSIM during the trip
Keep your home number and control roaming
If your phone supports both lines at once, label them clearly—for example, “Home” and “Japan”—and select the Japan eSIM for mobile data. Ask your home carrier what it charges for receiving SMS, calls and data in Japan before leaving the home line active.
A data-only eSIM can run messaging and internet-call apps, but it cannot itself receive ordinary SMS. That distinction matters when a bank, airline or booking service sends a login code to your regular number.
Make your data last
Before leaving Wi-Fi, download the maps and travel documents you expect to need. Save your hotel address in Japanese as well as English, and keep booking confirmations accessible without a connection.
Video streaming, cloud backups and automatic photo uploads can consume data faster than maps and text messages. Set large downloads and backups to use Wi-Fi, then review your phone’s mobile-data usage during the trip. If several povo packs are active, povo says the pack with the earliest expiry is used first. (povo.jp)
If the connection does not work
Work through these checks in order:
- Check the line: Is the Japan eSIM enabled and selected for mobile data?
- Check the pack: Is its validity active, and is data remaining?
- Check the APN: Follow the provider’s instructions for your phone, especially for IIJ and for povo on Android.
- Check the location: Move to an area with a clearer signal and try again.
- Contact support: Give the provider your exact phone model, plan, purchase method and the error message shown.
Keep the eSIM installed while seeking help unless the provider tells you otherwise. Save the purchase email or entry-code paper so you can identify the product.
Alternatives if an eSIM is not suitable
A physical prepaid SIM can suit an unlocked phone that has a compatible SIM slot. JNTO’s SIM information page provides a starting point for looking at visitor SIM providers. Check the card size and network compatibility against your phone. (jnto.go.jp)
Home-carrier roaming may be simpler if you need your usual number throughout the journey. Ask your carrier for the Japan data rate, any daily pass charges and the cost of calls and SMS. If you rely on Wi-Fi instead, save directions and tickets before leaving your accommodation.
Japan eSIM FAQ
Can I install an eSIM before flying?
Yes. povo says its online Japan SIM profile can be downloaded while preparing for a trip. Arrange a connection for installation, and pay attention to the start time of the data pack you select. (povo.jp)
How much data do I need?
Start with your phone’s recent mobile-data usage and consider what will change on holiday. Maps, messaging and restaurant searches may fit a smaller pack; frequent video calls, streaming and uploading photos call for a larger allowance. Also match the validity period to your arrival and departure times.
Can I make calls with a data-only eSIM?
You can use internet-calling and messaging apps over data. IIJ Japan Travel SIM/Digital and povo Japan SIM do not provide ordinary voice calling or SMS on the Japan eSIM line. (iijmio.jp)
How long does the povo account last?
povo’s online page says the account is automatically terminated 90 days after eSIM activation. Its service information also describes timing in relation to when the SIM becomes available for activation. If your stay approaches that limit, ask povo which date applies to your account and choose data packs accordingly. (povo.jp)
Can I get a refund if my povo online eSIM does not work?
The online product page states that returns, refunds and reissues are unavailable. If setup fails, use povo’s online support and provide your model, registration details and the steps you have already tried. (povo.jp)
