Japan Domestic Flights: Baggage and Airport Deadlines

When booking a domestic flight in Japan, compare the total fare and baggage conditions, then check the deadlines for your airline and airport. ANA, JAL and Peach have different rules: a weight limit, check-in window or airport deadline published by one airline is not a universal rule. The details below were checked against airline information on 4 November 2026; confirm the current conditions for your own ticket and flight before travelling.

1. Compare baggage before booking

Start with the cabin-baggage rules, because airlines count items and weight differently. ANA permits one cabin bag and one personal item, with a combined limit of 10 kg. Peach permits up to two items, including a personal item, but the combined limit is 7 kg; its limit also includes purchases made after security screening. These are different allowances, not interchangeable examples of a single Japan-wide standard.

Check both weight and dimensions
Airline and aircraft Cabin items Combined weight limit Cabin-bag size
ANA, aircraft with 100 seats or more One bag and one personal item 10 kg Bag within 55 × 40 × 25 cm and 115 cm total
ANA, aircraft with fewer than 100 seats One bag and one personal item 10 kg Bag within 45 × 35 × 20 cm and 100 cm total
Peach Up to two items, including a personal item 7 kg 115 cm total

For the ANA cabin-bag dimensions and item limits, see ANA’s domestic baggage guidance. ANA’s personal item must fit within 40 × 30 × 20 cm from 1 July 2026 and be stowed under the seat in front. The smaller ANA cabin-bag measurements apply to aircraft with fewer than 100 seats, so a bag that meets the larger-aircraft dimensions may still be too large for the aircraft operating your flight.

Peach gives its cabin-baggage rules and airport procedures on its domestic check-in and boarding page. Its 7 kg allowance covers both cabin items together, and purchases made after the security checkpoint count toward that total. If you plan to buy something in the terminal, leave room in your weight allowance rather than treating post-security purchases as an exception.

Measure the bag itself, including handles and wheels, and check both its individual dimensions and the permitted total of its three sides. Weigh the personal item together with the cabin bag; the combined limits in the table do not apply separately to each item. For ANA, also check which aircraft is shown for your booking, since the aircraft size determines which cabin-bag dimensions apply. The operating aircraft can change, so recheck the airline’s current rules rather than relying only on what fitted a previous flight.

2. Compare checked baggage and fare types

Cabin baggage is only part of the cost comparison if you need to check a suitcase. ANA’s published free-baggage information lists up to one 23 kg bag in Economy and one 32 kg bag in Premium Class, with the free number of bags depending on the fare. The maximum permitted sum of the checked bag’s dimensions is 158 cm, including handles and wheels. ANA notes that the operating aircraft can also have a restriction on the bag’s longest side. Check ANA’s free checked-baggage allowance against the fare you are buying, rather than assuming that every ticket has the same number of free bags.

Base fare→Checked bag→Seat and other options→Total
Include the costs that match your trip

Peach’s checked-baggage inclusion depends on the fare type. Standard and Standard Plus include one checked bag, while a checked bag must be added for a fee with the Minimum fare. Peach also requires an overweight charge for a checked bag weighing more than 20 kg and up to 32 kg. Check the applicable fare and charge for your booking before paying; the available information does not establish one price that applies to every booking.

A useful comparison keeps the same traveller, route and luggage needs for each flight. First record the fare displayed for each option, then add the checked bag you actually need and any optional services you intend to select. Finally, read the change and cancellation conditions attached to each fare. A lower starting fare is not necessarily the lower total for your trip once the baggage you need is included.

Do not confuse an included allowance with baggage purchased separately. ANA’s free checked-bag count depends on the ticket fare, while Peach identifies different inclusions for Minimum, Standard and Standard Plus. The precise number of pieces and any charge should be confirmed for the particular fare and booking; neither airline’s examples establish a universal rule for all domestic tickets. Change and cancellation conditions also vary by flight and fare, so they cannot be summarised as one fee or policy for every airline.

ANA advises passengers not to put valuables, fragile items or medicine in checked baggage. If you do check an electronic device, switch it completely off rather than leaving it in sleep mode. ANA also identifies knives as items that cannot be carried into the cabin and directs passengers to check them; confirm the current rule for the particular item before packing it.

3. Plan around airport deadlines

Airport deadlines are cut-offs, not recommended arrival times. For domestic departures from Haneda, ANA and JAL list a checked-baggage deadline of 30 minutes before scheduled departure from September 2026. JAL’s domestic guidance also sets a security-screening deadline of 20 minutes before departure and says passengers should reach the boarding gate by 10 minutes before departure. ANA likewise says to arrive at the gate by 10 minutes before departure. Read the applicable JAL boarding deadlines and ANA airport check-in guidance for your flight.

Airport arrival→Bag drop→Security→Boarding gate
Leave time before each deadline

Peach lists airport check-in from 90 minutes until 30 minutes before scheduled departure. Its app check-in window is from 120 minutes until 30 minutes before departure. Have the required QR code or six-digit booking number ready for the domestic boarding procedure. These are check-in windows; do not mistake them for a statement that every later airport step is complete as soon as check-in is done.

Work backwards from the scheduled departure time. If you are checking a bag on a JAL flight from Haneda, the 30-minute baggage cut-off comes before the security and gate deadlines, so you need to reach the airport, find the correct counter and allow time for any queue before that cut-off. With Peach, note the end of the check-in window as well as the separate steps that follow. The airline’s published cut-offs do not tell you how long your journey to the airport or the queue will take, so allow time for both.

ANA says that any unpaid balance on a ticket must be settled by 20 minutes before departure. It also advises allowing time for procedures when connecting to an international flight. A domestic gate deadline is not an allowance for completing international check-in or other international procedures, particularly when the flights are on separate bookings. Check the complete itinerary and the instructions for each flight rather than treating the domestic departure time as the only deadline that matters.

Check the gate shown for your specific flight on the day of departure. ANA directs passengers to use its app and airport information displays to confirm gate information, which can be more useful than relying on an earlier itinerary view. For onward travel, plan from the airport you will actually use: Haneda and Narita are different starting points for travel to Tokyo, just as New Chitose is the airport to consider for travel to Sapporo. The airport name matters when planning the full journey, not only the time in the air.

4. Check power-bank rules before packing

JAL says mobile batteries cannot be placed in checked baggage. Under its rule introduced on 24 April 2026, a passenger may carry up to two mobile batteries of 160 Wh or less in the cabin. JAL prohibits charging the battery itself during the flight and also prohibits using it to charge other devices. Read JAL’s mobile-battery notice and check the operating airline’s current instructions before travelling.

Check Wh rating→Carry in cabin→Follow onboard charging rules
Keep the airline rule with the battery

Before packing, find the watt-hour rating on each battery and count how many you intend to carry. JAL’s cited rule includes both a capacity condition and a per-person limit, so meeting one does not automatically mean the other is met. Keep the battery out of checked baggage and follow the restrictions on charging it and using it to charge another device onboard.

JAL has said that a limit of 100 Wh may apply from January 2027. That is a possible future change, not a settled rule in the cited notice. If your travel date is in or after January 2027, check JAL’s current guidance again instead of assuming that the 2026 limit will still apply. Requirements can also differ between airlines, so do not apply JAL’s rule to another operator without checking.

5. Questions before travel

The quickest way to resolve a baggage or deadline question is to identify the operating airline, the fare type and the airport for your particular flight. Then compare your luggage with that airline’s published limits and note the applicable check-in, baggage and gate times. The answers below summarise the cited guidance; check the official information again for your travel date.

Does every Peach fare include a checked bag?

No. Peach includes one checked bag with Standard and Standard Plus, while the Minimum fare requires you to add a checked bag for a fee. Peach also requires an overweight charge for a checked bag over 20 kg and up to 32 kg. Confirm the inclusion and charge shown for the fare you are selecting.

Can I use the same cabin-baggage weight limit on ANA and Peach?

No. ANA’s cited allowance is 10 kg combined for one cabin bag and one personal item, while Peach’s is 7 kg combined for up to two items including a personal item. Peach also counts purchases made after security toward its weight limit. Check the size rule as well as the weight, since ANA’s cabin-bag dimensions depend on whether the aircraft has 100 seats or more.

Can I put a power bank in checked baggage on a JAL flight?

No. JAL says mobile batteries cannot go in checked baggage, and its rule introduced on 24 April 2026 permits up to two batteries of 160 Wh or less per person in the cabin. JAL also prohibits charging the battery or using it to charge other devices during the flight. Check the current rule for your travel date, especially because JAL says a 100 Wh limit may apply from January 2027.

When should I reach the gate?

For the cited domestic guidance, ANA says to reach the gate by 10 minutes before departure, and JAL gives the same gate deadline. JAL also lists security screening by 20 minutes before departure, while ANA says any unpaid ticket balance must be settled by 20 minutes before departure. These are cut-offs, not recommended airport-arrival times; allow additional time to get to the airport, check baggage if needed and complete the earlier steps.

Can I carry a knife in the cabin?

ANA lists knives among items that cannot be carried into the cabin and directs passengers to check them. Do not rely on that general description to decide how to pack an unusual or specific item. Confirm the current airline rules for the particular knife before travelling.
