Ishigaki Island Guide: Airport, Buses and Ferry Planning

Ishigaki is easier to plan when you decide what your first stop will be: the city, a coastal destination such as Kabira, or Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal for a ferry. The airport has bus services from Azuma Bus and Karry Kanko, and it publishes approximate taxi times and costs for several destinations. If you are connecting to a ferry, plan the airport-to-port transfer and ticket arrangements as part of the journey: a scheduled boat may not wait for a delayed flight.

This guide brings together the published airport options, Azuma Bus ticket details, ferry-operator rules, beach information and sea-safety guidance available in the official sources. The cited timetables, fares and policies were checked or recorded on 4 November 2026; services and conditions can change, so use the linked operator pages to confirm details for your travel date.

Airport transport and estimated costs

The Ishigaki Airport access page lists bus and taxi options. The services differ in route, so check where a bus goes before choosing it based only on its airport departure. If you are going straight to the port, a hotel or a coastal destination, compare the published route with your actual destination and allow for the time needed to reach the correct stop or transfer point.

Azuma Bus route 4 Airport route via Hirae, Ohama and Shiraho Check the current timetable and fare.
Azuma Bus route 10 Airport route via Art Hotel and ANA Check the current timetable and fare.
Azuma Bus route 11 Airport toward Kabira Park and Yonehara Check current service details; a transfer at the bus terminal is another published way to reach Kabira.
Taxi to the remote-island terminal About 25 minutes About ¥3,500; an estimate, not a guaranteed fare.
Taxi to Kabira Park About 40 minutes About ¥5,600; an estimate, not a guaranteed fare.
Taxi to Tamatorizaki viewpoint About 25 minutes About ¥3,600; an estimate, not a guaranteed fare.

The airport’s taxi figures are approximate: travel time and cost can vary with the route and traffic. Yaeyama Kanko Ferry separately gives an estimate of about 30 minutes by taxi between the airport and the port, so the airport’s approximately 25-minute figure and the ferry company’s approximately 30-minute figure should be treated as different planning estimates, not as a contradiction or a promise. For a time-sensitive ferry connection, leave room for the transfer and ticket procedure rather than planning around the shortest estimate.

The airport lists Azuma Bus enquiries at 0980-87-5423 and Karry Kanko enquiries at 0980-88-0117. Confirm the boarding point, route and service for your date with the relevant operator, particularly if you arrive late or need to continue beyond the city. A published taxi estimate also does not guarantee that a vehicle will be immediately available when you land.

Local buses, routes and passes

Azuma Bus and Karry Kanko are separate operators, so identify the company serving each leg of your journey before you compare prices. The airport lists Karry Kanko’s direct route 55 and Azuma routes 4, 10 and 11, with their routes serving different areas. The airport access page is the starting point for checking those airport services; use the operator’s latest information to confirm a departure and destination.

Purchase time→24-hour validity→Azuma local buses→Excludes regular sightseeing bus
The 24-hour pass belongs to Azuma's local routes.

Azuma Bus’s ticket information lists a one-day free pass at ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for children. It is valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase, rather than only until the end of that calendar day, and can be purchased at the bus-terminal counter or aboard a local bus. The pass covers Azuma’s local routes but cannot be used on its regular sightseeing bus; it is not a general pass for every bus company.

Azuma Bus ticket Published price Published coverage and purchase information
One-day free pass Adult ¥1,000 / child ¥500 Azuma local routes for 24 hours from purchase; excludes the regular sightseeing bus. Buy at the bus-terminal counter or on a local bus.
Airport–remote-island terminal and related round-trip ticket Adult ¥1,000 / child ¥500 Check the exact covered stops and current terms before buying.

To decide whether the one-day pass makes sense, add up the current fares for the Azuma journeys you actually expect to take and compare that total with the pass price. If one part of your route uses Karry Kanko, the pass does not cover that company’s service; check its fare separately. Ferry tickets and local-bus tickets are also separate products, so do not include a boat fare in a bus-pass calculation.

The Azuma route information recorded in the research listed two route 11 departures from the airport toward Kabira: 12:15 and 15:00. The associated fare table was revised on 1 April 2025, so those departure times and the table should be treated as historical published information, not as a live timetable for a future trip. The Azuma local-bus page and the airport’s access information are the places to recheck current services, including the bus-terminal transfer option toward Kabira.

Planning a ferry connection to another island

For an island-hopping trip, choose the island and ferry operator before working out the airport transfer. Ishigaki’s remote-island terminal serves operators with their own tickets and procedures, and a ticket issued by one company may not be valid on another company’s boat. Check the sailing, ticket arrangements and any operating notice with the company named on your booking.

Flight arrival→Transfer to port→Ticket counter→Correct operator's boat
A ferry company may not wait for a delayed flight.

Yaeyama Kanko Ferry says its scheduled boats do not wait for delayed flights. Its guidance estimates the airport-to-port trip at about 30 minutes by taxi or 30–40 minutes by local bus. For an example arrival at the airport at 14:00, the company suggests considering a boat departure roughly 1 hour 30 minutes or more later by taxi, or 2 hours or more later by bus. These are planning examples rather than a guarantee that a particular flight will connect with a particular sailing; check the current schedule and leave time for the ticket process.

The two operators’ published ticket details are not identical:

Operator Published ticket and timing guidance
Anei Kanko Aim to reach the counter about 30 minutes before departure. Even a reserved ticket must be fully purchased by 15 minutes before departure. Online advance reservations are available until 18:00 on the previous day, with an approximately 5% discount described by the operator. Same-day tickets are sold if seats are available. Seating is free seating.
Yaeyama Kanko Ferry Same-day tickets may be available if the service is not full. The operator does not accept seat reservations. Its scheduled boats do not wait for delayed flights.

Before travelling, check the Anei Kanko travel information or the Yaeyama Kanko Ferry FAQ, depending on your operator. Confirm the exact sailing, ticket deadline, reservation conditions and any relevant cancellation or operating information. The shared-ticket arrangement between Yaeyama Kanko Ferry and other companies ended on 30 September 2020; Yaeyama Kanko Ferry says its ticket cannot be used on another company’s service.

A practical connection check is to compare your flight arrival with the operator’s current guidance, then account for the airport-to-port journey and the ticket deadline. Confirm which company operates the boat and follow that company’s instructions at the terminal; do not assume that another operator will accept the ticket. Check the return sailing as well, and leave a suitable margin for your onward transport rather than relying on a tight boat-to-airport transfer.

Luggage at Ishigaki Port

If you plan to visit another island without taking all your bags, Anei Kanko says that coin lockers are available inside the remote-island terminal. The company also lists luggage storage at its counter for ¥500 for a large item and ¥300 for a small item. These are the published amounts in its travel information, not a guarantee that space will be available when you arrive.

Ask Anei Kanko about current hours, the operator’s size categories and availability before relying on storage as part of a ferry connection. If you are using a different company, check that operator’s instructions rather than assuming that the same counter arrangements apply. Leave enough time to deal with your luggage as well as any ticket collection or purchase deadline.

Beaches, rainy season and sea safety

The Ishigaki tourism association’s FAQ names Maezato, Sukuji, Fusaki, Sunset and Painushima-cho artificial beach among the island’s managed beaches. The list can help you identify places to investigate, but it does not establish a beach’s conditions, suitability or operating status for your visit. Check the individual facility or relevant local information before setting out.

Current sea notice→Managed beach status→Group plan→Flotation→Follow local instructions
Conditions vary by place and date.

The association gives mid-May to mid-June as a usual estimate for Ishigaki’s rainy season. This is a general seasonal guide, not a forecast for a particular week, and it cannot tell you whether a beach or activity will be suitable on your date. For current information, check the forecast and local notices close to the time of your visit.

Ishigaki City’s sea-safety guidance advises people not to swim in dangerous places affected by currents, rip currents or high waves. It recommends going into the sea in a group and watching out for one another, avoiding swimming when overtired, short of sleep or under the influence of alcohol, and wearing flotation equipment such as a life jacket. Follow the instructions at your chosen location and check the conditions on the day; seasonal averages cannot replace local advice.

The available information does not establish the sea conditions, lifeguard schedule or suitability of any particular beach on a future date. Ask the facility or activity operator about current conditions, equipment and your group’s needs before making a water-activity plan. If conditions or local instructions make swimming unsafe, do not treat a beach’s inclusion on a managed-beach list as evidence that it is safe to enter the water.

Building a realistic Ishigaki itinerary

Start with the fixed parts of your trip: your flight arrival, accommodation location and any ferry departure. Then choose destinations that fit the transport actually available to you, including the return journey. This order helps prevent an attractive but difficult-to-connect destination from becoming the assumption on which the rest of the day depends.

Flight→Ferry if needed→Current island transport→Activities→Return
Fix time-sensitive transport before adding other stops.

For a day focused on Kabira, check the airport or bus-terminal connection and the return service before adding another activity. Route 11 has been published as an airport route toward Kabira Park and Yonehara, and a bus-terminal transfer is another listed way to reach Kabira, but the historical departure information in this guide is not a substitute for the current timetable. Compare the services for your date with a taxi estimate if you need another option; remember that taxi times and amounts are approximate.

For a day built around another island, check both ferry sailings, the relevant operator’s ticket deadline and the time needed to reach the port from the airport or your accommodation. If you are flying in on the same day, the ferry operator’s published connection guidance is especially important because a scheduled boat may not wait for a delayed flight. For a beach day, check the facility’s current operating information and sea conditions before treating the beach as the day’s main activity.

A bus pass can be useful when the planned journeys are on Azuma local routes and the total fares justify the pass. It is less helpful if the route depends on a different operator, a regular sightseeing bus or a timetable that does not fit the day. A taxi estimate can help you compare a route, but it does not establish a guaranteed fare or vehicle availability.

There is no single verified daily budget for every Ishigaki trip. Accommodation costs and conditions vary by property and date, while meals, activities and transport depend on the itinerary and party. Add the current costs for your own dates—including any airport transfer, local buses, ferry tickets, accommodation and activities—rather than assuming a universal trip total.

For broader Okinawa planning, see how to get to Okinawa, Naha Airport to Naha and Japan first-time travel tips. Each island and airport transfer is a separate journey, so check the current information from the operator serving the route you intend to use. A longer Ishigaki stay can make it easier to separate a ferry day, a beach visit and time around the island, but the right allocation depends on the services and conditions available for your dates.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Ishigaki Airport to the port?

The airport’s published taxi estimate to Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal is about 25 minutes and ¥3,500. Yaeyama Kanko Ferry gives an airport-to-port taxi estimate of about 30 minutes, while its estimate for a local bus is 30–40 minutes. These are approximate figures from separate sources, so check the current route and allow extra time for traffic, boarding and ferry ticket procedures.

Is the Azuma Bus one-day pass valid until midnight?

No: Azuma Bus’s published one-day free pass is valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase. The listed prices are ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for children, and the pass covers Azuma local routes rather than every company’s bus. It excludes Azuma’s regular sightseeing bus; check the current ticket information before buying.

Will a ferry wait if my flight is delayed?

Yaeyama Kanko Ferry says its scheduled boats do not wait for delayed flights. Its connection examples suggest leaving about 1 hour 30 minutes or more between a 14:00 airport arrival and a boat when travelling by taxi, or about two hours or more when travelling by bus, but those are not guarantees. Check your operator’s current schedule and connection advice before booking a same-day flight-and-ferry plan.

Can I use one ferry company’s ticket on another company’s boat?

Do not assume that you can. Yaeyama Kanko Ferry says the shared-ticket system ended on 30 September 2020 and that its ticket cannot be used on another company’s service. Check the operator named on your booking and buy the ticket required for that service.

When is Ishigaki’s rainy season?

The Ishigaki tourism association gives mid-May to mid-June as a usual estimate. It is a seasonal guide rather than a prediction for a particular date, and actual weather can differ. Check a current forecast and local notices for your travel dates.

Is a managed beach necessarily suitable for swimming on the day?

No. The tourism association’s list identifies managed beaches, but it does not establish the day’s sea conditions, lifeguard arrangements or whether swimming is suitable at a particular location. Check current local and facility information, follow posted instructions and use the city’s sea-safety advice, including its guidance on currents, rip currents, high waves and flotation equipment.
