How to Get to Shizuoka: City, Izu and Mount Fuji Gateways

Shizuoka can mean Shizuoka City, a station, or a large prefecture stretching between several different travel areas. The best arrival point depends on your final address: Shizuoka Station is useful for the city, while Atami, Mishima, Shin-Fuji and Hamamatsu may be more suitable for other destinations. For Gotemba and Fujinomiya, direct road or rail options from Tokyo are also listed in the prefectural access guide.

If you are flying into Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport, the listed bus to Shizuoka Station takes about 50 minutes and costs ¥1,200 for an adult. That connection takes you to the city; it does not, by itself, take you to every Mount Fuji viewpoint or Izu hotel. Start with the address of your accommodation or attraction, choose a suitable gateway, and then check the full journey for your travel date.

Quick navigation

Izu→Atami or Mishima; Fuji area→Mishima or Shin-Fuji; Shizuoka City→Shizuoka Station
Choose the station for your destination, then check the specific train.

Choose the right Shizuoka arrival station

First identify your actual destination, then select the station that gives you a sensible connection to it. Shizuoka Prefecture has several Shinkansen gateways as well as conventional rail and long-distance bus access, so the prefecture’s name alone is not enough to identify the best arrival point. The Explore Shizuoka access guide lists these travel modes and describes routes from Tokyo and western Japan.

Izu→Atami or Mishima access check; Fuji area→Mishima or Shin-Fuji access check; Shizuoka City→Shizuoka Station
Match the station to the final destination
Arrival point Consider it for Practical check
Shizuoka Station Shizuoka City and the listed airport bus connection Confirm the onward connection from the station to your address
Atami An Izu trip where the accommodation or local access information points to Atami Compare Atami with Mishima using the destination’s own access instructions
Mishima Izu or the Mount Fuji area, depending on your final destination Check the full local connection, not just the Shinkansen journey
Shin-Fuji Some Mount Fuji-area visits Confirm that it is convenient for your particular viewpoint or accommodation
Hamamatsu Western Shizuoka and journeys from Kyoto Check the train’s stops and your local onward journey

Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station are the named Tokyo-side Shinkansen departure points in the prefectural guide. It describes Mishima and Shin-Fuji as useful gateways for the Mount Fuji area, but that does not make either one the right station for every Fuji-area destination. A saved viewpoint, hotel or trail access point may be on a different side of the region from another place described as “near Mount Fuji.”

For an Izu stay, read the hotel or local tourism access directions before buying a ticket. Compare Atami and Mishima if those are the stations suggested for your destination, and include the onward connection in your decision. The Izu tourism access page gives useful Shinkansen journey-time comparisons, but a short ride between stations does not establish the best complete route to your accommodation.

For Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Station is the relevant gateway for the city-to-airport bus described below, as well as the city journeys in the prefectural access information. For western Shizuoka, the official guide lists Kyoto–Hamamatsu and Kyoto–Kakegawa Shinkansen journeys. These examples show why it is worth choosing by destination rather than buying a ticket to Shizuoka Station simply because your hotel is somewhere in the prefecture.

Travel to Shizuoka from Tokyo and western Japan

The times in the table are guide figures published by official tourism or prefectural sources, not live journey quotes. Train stopping patterns, actual departures and the total fare for your date must be checked before you travel. Use the figures to identify possible routes, then confirm the specific service and the connection from its arrival station to your final stop.

Tokyo→Hikari about 42 min→Mishima; Tokyo→Kodama about 50 min→Mishima
Choose the departure and stopping pattern together
Journey Published route and guide time What to check next
Tokyo–Atami Shinkansen, about 40 minutes Check the date-specific departure and the onward connection
Tokyo–Mishima Hikari about 42 minutes; Kodama about 50 minutes Match the train’s stops to your travel date
Shinagawa–Mishima Hikari about 35 minutes; Kodama about 43 minutes Compare this starting point with your actual Tokyo location
Shin-Yokohama–Mishima Kodama about 32 minutes Confirm a dated departure and the local connection
Nagoya–Mishima Hikari about 1 hour 14 minutes; Kodama about 1 hour 47 minutes Compare arrival time and total journey, not just train time
Kyoto–Hamamatsu Shinkansen, about 70 minutes Confirm that your chosen train stops at Hamamatsu
Kyoto–Kakegawa Shinkansen, a little over 90 minutes Confirm the train’s stops and onward route

The Tokyo–Atami figure comes from Explore Shizuoka. The Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama and Nagoya comparisons, together with several within-prefecture examples, are listed on the Izu tourism access page. These are useful planning references, but they do not tell you which specific train is available on your date or whether it fits your final connection.

For Shizuoka Station, the prefectural business-access page lists about one hour to Tokyo Station by Hikari, about one hour to Nagoya by Hikari, and about two hours to Shin-Osaka by Hikari. Those are published planning times, not a guarantee that every Hikari service makes the same stops. Check the actual train’s stopping pattern before building your schedule around the service name.

Within the prefecture, the Izu access guide lists Atami–Mishima at about 7 minutes by Kodama. It also lists Shizuoka–Mishima at about 16 minutes by Hikari or 22 minutes by Kodama, and Hamamatsu–Mishima at about 40 minutes by Hikari or 51 minutes by Kodama. For Nagoya–Mishima, it gives about 1 hour 14 minutes by Hikari and about 1 hour 47 minutes by Kodama. The Shizuoka Prefecture access information is the source for the Shizuoka Station planning figures to Tokyo, Nagoya and Shin-Osaka.

Do not treat these times as a price comparison. The current total for a Tokyo–Shizuoka reserved-seat journey has not been confirmed for specific dates, trains and seat conditions, so this guide does not quote a current rail fare. To compare the cost of two routes, check the complete rail ticket for your date and add any local connection you need after the Shinkansen; then read the conditions of any pass separately.

The prefectural tourism guide also lists conventional rail and long-distance buses as ways to reach Shizuoka. They are alternatives to consider alongside the Shinkansen, but the available facts here do not establish a current fare comparison between them. Check the dated journey, arrival point and onward connection before deciding that a route is cheaper or more convenient.

Get to Gotemba and Fujinomiya

For Gotemba and Fujinomiya, compare the direct options listed from the Tokyo side before routing through Shizuoka City. The prefectural tourism guide gives a Shinjuku–Gotemba route by Odakyu Romancecar taking a little over 90 minutes, and a Shinjuku–Gotemba bus taking about two hours. For Fujinomiya, it lists a bus from Tokyo Station taking about two and a half hours.

Shinjuku–Gotemba rail: over 90 min→Shinjuku–Gotemba bus: about 2 h→Tokyo Station–Fujinomiya bus: about 2 h 30 min
Compare the route matching your actual destination
Tokyo or Shinagawa→Shinkansen→prefecture gateway; Shinjuku→Gotemba rail or bus; Tokyo Station→Fujinomiya bus
Choose the branch that avoids an unnecessary city detour
Destination Tokyo-side departure Published route and time Check before you go
Gotemba Shinjuku Odakyu Romancecar route, a little over 90 minutes Compare the arrival station with your final address
Gotemba Shinjuku Bus, about 2 hours Check the exact bus stop and the dated service
Fujinomiya Tokyo Station Bus, about 2 hours 30 minutes Save the exact arrival and return boarding points

These are guide times, not current fare quotes or confirmation that a particular departure operates on your chosen date. The official Explore Shizuoka route information is the place to start when identifying the options; follow the relevant route information and check the operator’s dated details before purchase. Confirm the arrival and return stops as well as the outbound journey, especially if your accommodation or attraction is not at the station named in the route.

The key comparison is not only how long the main journey takes, but where it leaves you relative to your final address. A bus and a rail route can arrive at different points, so check which one gives you the appropriate local connection. Do not assume that reaching Gotemba or Fujinomiya means you have reached a specific Mount Fuji viewpoint.

Travel from Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport

The airport’s official Shizuoka-route information lists a Shizutetsu Justline bus serving Shin-Shizuoka, Shizuoka Station and the Shizuoka Interchange entrance among its stops. The published ride between Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport and Shizuoka Station is about 50 minutes. It is a connection to Shizuoka City, not a direct transfer to every destination in the prefecture.

Airport bus→no reservation→seating capacity→no wheelchair boarding equipment
Check the actual vehicle before relying on the transfer
Airport→Kanaya Station; Airport→Shimada Station; Airport→Fujieda Station
Check onward connections before choosing an alternative
Passenger category Listed fare
Adult ¥1,200
Elementary-school child ¥600
Preschool child Free, as listed by the airport

The timetable period posted in the supplied airport information is 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. These dates are specific to that posted timetable; check the airport’s current information if travelling outside that period or if your plans depend on a particular departure. The approximate journey time is not a guarantee of arrival at a tightly scheduled onward train, since the airport warns that road conditions can cause major delays.

The bus does not require a reservation, but it uses the highway and has fixed seating capacity. If it is full, passengers cannot board, so “no reservation” does not mean a seat is guaranteed. The airport’s notice about alternatives when the Shizuoka bus is full identifies airport bus connections via Kanaya, Shimada and Fujieda stations; check those current options rather than assuming a full bus can take more passengers.

The airport lists contactless bank-card payment and transport IC cards as accepted payment methods. Check the current boarding instructions before setting out, particularly if you plan to rely on a particular payment method. Allow time for the transfer from the airport to the station and for your onward connection; the published 50-minute ride is only the bus segment.

Accessibility also needs advance attention. The airport describes the Shizuoka-route vehicle as having no wheelchair boarding equipment, so the listed stop and route do not establish that boarding is accessible for a traveller who needs that equipment. Contact the operator before arranging a flight connection around this bus and ask about the actual vehicle and a suitable alternative for your needs.

Get to Miho-no-Matsubara

The official Miho-no-Matsubara access information describes a route from Shizuoka Station to Shimizu Station by train, followed by a bus toward Miho. The train journey is about 13 minutes, and the bus from Shimizu Station to Miho Matsubara Iriguchi is about 25 minutes. From Miho Matsubara Iriguchi, allow about 15 minutes to walk to the Miho Shirube visitor centre.

Shizuoka Station→Shimizu about 13 min→bus about 25 min→Iriguchi→walk about 15 min
The final walk changes with the bus stop and operating day
Leg Published journey information
Shizuoka Station to Shimizu Station Train, about 13 minutes
Shimizu Station to Miho Matsubara Iriguchi Miho-bound bus, about 25 minutes
Miho Matsubara Iriguchi to Miho Shirube Walk, about 15 minutes
World Heritage Miho-no-Matsubara stop Weekend-and-holiday service; about a 5-minute walk to Miho Shirube

The World Heritage Miho-no-Matsubara stop is described as a weekend-and-holiday service. Do not plan on the shorter five-minute walk for a weekday visit without checking that day’s service. If walking distance matters, confirm which stop is served on your visit date and read the return timetable before leaving the Shimizu Station area.

A water-bus option is also described, but its operation can vary by day and weather. Check its current operating information rather than assuming that a boat shown on a sightseeing map runs whenever the train and bus route does. If the water service is important to your plans, identify a land-route fallback; the available information does not establish a guaranteed combined ticket or protected transfer between train, bus and boat.

How to get to Shizuoka: quick answers

The best route depends on the exact destination, and a general journey time is not a substitute for a date-specific timetable. Check the official information for the route you plan to use, then confirm its local connections and return journey. The answers below address the most common choices in this guide.

Is Shizuoka Station the best stop for Izu?

Not automatically: Shizuoka Prefecture has several gateways, and Shizuoka Station is not necessarily the best arrival point for an Izu hotel. Read the hotel or local tourism access directions and compare Atami and Mishima where relevant. Include the connection from the station to your final address rather than comparing Shinkansen times alone.

Which station should I use for the Mount Fuji area?

There is no single answer for every destination around Mount Fuji. The prefectural guide describes Mishima and Shin-Fuji as useful gateways, while the exact choice depends on the side of the area and the attraction or accommodation you intend to reach. Check the final local connection before choosing a ticket to either station.

Is the airport bus reservation-only?

No reservation is required for the listed bus between Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport and Shizuoka Station, but seating capacity is fixed. If the bus is full, you cannot board. The airport’s full-bus notice lists connections via Kanaya, Shimada and Fujieda as alternatives to check.

Can I pay for the airport bus with a card?

The airport lists contactless bank-card payment and transport IC cards for the Shizuoka-route bus. Check the current boarding instructions for your departure before relying on a particular payment method. The listed adult fare is ¥1,200, the elementary-school fare is ¥600, and preschool children are listed as free.

Does a published travel time confirm my last connection?

No. A general access figure does not confirm the last departure, a temporary cancellation, a seat on a full bus or a connection on your travel date. Check each operator’s current timetable for the date you are travelling, including the final local leg and the return journey. The official access pages are planning references, not live confirmation of every service.
