The best route to Ishikawa depends on where you plan to stay. Kanazawa Station is a convenient gateway for the city, while Kagaonsen Station is useful for the Kaga hot-spring area. If you are flying, Komatsu Airport has a direct bus to Kanazawa; Noto Satoyama Airport is an option for the Noto Peninsula.

From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen directly to Kanazawa. From Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya, connect to the Shinkansen at Tsuruga. Compare the journey all the way to your accommodation, including transfers and local transport, before booking. Ishikawa’s official access guide provides an overview of the routes.

From Tokyo: take the Hokuriku Shinkansen

The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Tokyo and Kanazawa without a transfer. Ishikawa’s tourism guide gives approximately 2 hours 30 minutes for the fastest Kagayaki service. Check the stops when booking: if your destination is Kagaonsen, choose a train that stops there or plan a connection.

JR East’s 2026 Fact Book lists ¥14,600 for the Tokyo–Kanazawa rail fare and charge, based on the March 2026 timetable. This is an adult one-way ordinary-car reserved-seat reference for a regular-season journey; the booking price can differ by travel date and seat type. JR East’s reservation guide also shows ¥14,600 as an adult reference price for a Tokyo–Kanazawa Hakutaka service.

Buy tickets through JR-EAST Train Reservation or at a station. Kagayaki trains are all-reserved, so book a seat before boarding.

From Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya: change at Tsuruga

From Osaka or Kyoto, take the Thunderbird limited express to Tsuruga, then transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for Kagaonsen or Kanazawa. From Nagoya, take the Shirasagi limited express to Tsuruga and change to the Shinkansen. Search both legs together to see the transfer wait and total fare.

For planning, the published references below are station-to-station times to Kanazawa, not times to your hotel:

For eligible overseas visitors, JR West’s HOKURIKU One-way Ticket lists ¥8,000 per adult and ¥4,000 per child from the Osaka City area to Kanazawa, or ¥6,500 per adult and ¥3,250 per child from the Kyoto City area. The exchange order is sold through selected travel agencies outside Japan and must be exchanged in Japan. Check the participating stations and eligibility before buying.

For Nagoya, JR’s WEB Hayatoku 7 advance-purchase ticket is a useful fare comparison. JR West’s fare table for Shirasagi and the Hokuriku Shinkansen lists ¥8,170 per adult and ¥4,080 per child from the Nagoya City area to Kanazawa in the regular season. It requires a same-day transfer at Tsuruga; restricted travel periods apply. The ticket is sold through JR West’s e5489 reservation service, with advance-purchase and availability conditions.

By air: Komatsu or Noto Satoyama

Komatsu Airport is convenient for Kanazawa and southern Ishikawa. Its limousine bus connects the airport and Kanazawa Station without a transfer. Compare the flight price with the bus fare and the time needed for airport procedures and onward travel.

Noto Satoyama Airport is useful for northern Noto. Its official flight timetable for October 25, 2026 to January 31, 2027 lists Haneda departures NH747 at 09:00, arriving at 10:00, and NH749 at 15:05, arriving at 16:05. Check availability and operating status for your travel date before booking the rest of the journey.

For an airport-to-destination transfer in Noto, the Furusato Taxi is a shared, pre-booked service. Reserve by phone or online by 15:00 the day before travel. The airport lists ¥1,300 for Wajima City or Anamizu, with a different fare for the Monzen area of Wajima and other destinations. Payment is cash only. Check the destination and reserve through the airport’s taxi page.

These figures describe different services and products. Add the cost of reaching your departure station or airport and the final transfer to your accommodation. Sources include Hokutetsu’s airport-bus fare guide, Ishikawa’s local transport guide and JR West’s Hokuriku Arch Pass page.

Is the Hokuriku Arch Pass worth buying?

The Hokuriku Arch Pass can suit a longer itinerary between Tokyo and Kansai via Ishikawa. It covers the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Tsuruga and designated limited express trains, including Thunderbird, within its valid area.

The pass costs ¥35,000 for adults aged 12 or over and ¥17,500 for children aged 6–11. It is valid for seven consecutive days. Users need a passport issued by a foreign government and Temporary Visitor status; present the passport when receiving the pass.

Reserve a seat before boarding when using a reserved seat. A pass does not create non-reserved seating on an all-reserved train. The pass also does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka. Compare its price with the individual tickets for the journeys you intend to make, plus transport outside the pass area.

Follow the airport and station steps

From Komatsu Airport to Kanazawa

  1. After arrival, follow signs to the airport bus boarding area.
  2. Check the current Hokutetsu airport-bus timetable for Kanazawa.
  3. Go to the stop and board the next suitable bus. This is not a reservation-based service: seats are not booked in advance.
  4. Pay the fare for your stop. Hokutetsu lists ¥1,400 per adult and ¥700 per child between the airport and Kanazawa Station West Gate.
  5. From the station, continue by local bus, taxi or on foot to your accommodation.

Where ticket machines are available, Hokutetsu asks passengers to buy a ticket before boarding and put it in the fare box when getting off. Its airport-bus guide also explains payment and luggage handling.

For the timetable valid from October 25 to November 30, 2026, Hokutetsu links airport departures to flight arrivals. Check the current timetable and service notices for your flight. The bus ride takes approximately 40–55 minutes; allow additional time for the terminal, waiting and the trip from the station to your hotel. Komatsu Airport’s FAQ also directs passengers to the Kanazawa bus.

From Kanazawa Station to Komatsu Airport

For the airport, board at Kanazawa Station West Gate, bus terminal stop 3. In the timetable for October 25 to November 30, 2026, the 06:05 departure arrives at 06:50, and the 07:10 departure arrives at 07:55. Use the English timetable for your travel date and choose a bus that leaves enough time for your flight’s check-in requirements.

The bus has a luggage trunk. Handle your own baggage and keep valuables and fragile items with you. The Hokutetsu airport-bus page provides current timetables and service information.

Change trains at Tsuruga

When travelling from Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya, keep both train details together:

  1. Check the limited express arrival time at Tsuruga.
  2. Follow signs for the Hokuriku Shinkansen transfer.
  3. Check the departure board for your train, platform and destination.
  4. Keep your ticket or pass and any seat reservation ready.

If a delay makes your connection impossible, ask station staff about the options for your particular ticket.

Continue from Kanazawa, Kagaonsen or the airport

Getting around Kanazawa

Kanazawa’s sightseeing loop buses leave from Kanazawa Station and serve areas near Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle and Omicho Market. The Kanazawa City One Day Pass costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children and covers the loop buses and other participating services within the designated area for one day. It cannot be used on the Kanazawa Light-Up Bus.

The pass is available in paper and digital versions. Buy it before boarding rather than expecting to purchase it on the bus, and compare it with individual fares if you plan only a few rides. See Hokutetsu’s route and pass information.

Going to Kagaonsen

The Shinkansen journey from Kanazawa to Kagaonsen Station takes approximately 15 minutes on the service described by Ishikawa’s tourism guide. The station is a gateway, not the final stop for every hot-spring town, so check your hotel’s address and onward transport before booking.

CANBUS connects Kagaonsen Station with hot-spring areas and attractions. Visit Kaga lists an adult one-day ticket at ¥1,300 and a one-time ticket at ¥500. Compare the route and timetable with your accommodation’s location in Visit Kaga’s transport guide.

Travelling around Noto

If your Noto itinerary includes several places, compare the available bus and rail connections with a rental car, and check the final return service before setting out. For Noto Satoyama Airport, arrange the Furusato Taxi by the previous afternoon if it serves your destination. Keep the booking details and meeting point with your flight information.

Renting a car and driving in winter

A car can be useful for destinations with infrequent connections or a multi-stop itinerary. Compare pick-up and return locations, vehicle size and rental conditions. For winter travel, confirm that the vehicle has suitable winter tyres and check road and weather conditions before departure. Ishikawa’s getting-around guide includes rental-car planning information.

Book the whole journey, not just the main leg

Before paying, work backwards from your final address:

  1. Choose the destination station or airport. Kanazawa Station, Kagaonsen Station and Komatsu Airport serve different parts of Ishikawa.
  2. Search the main leg for your date. Check the train’s stops, fare and seat-reservation requirements.
  3. Add the transfer. For Kansai and Nagoya routes, check both trains at Tsuruga. For flights, add airport procedures and the onward bus or taxi.
  4. Price the last leg. Compare the local bus, taxi, rental car or accommodation transfer with your expected arrival time.
  5. Save the details. Keep your booking confirmation, accepted ticket format, boarding point and accommodation address together.
  6. Check service notices before departure. Timetables and flight-linked buses can change.

For a rail pass, compare the total of the individual journeys it would cover with the pass price. Add airport buses, local transport and other excluded journeys separately.

Connections, luggage and alternatives

The Komatsu Airport limousine bus has a luggage trunk. Keep valuables with you and check the operator’s rules if you are travelling with unusually large items.

If your wider trip includes the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, JR West has a separate oversized-baggage reservation system for those lines. Check the applicable luggage rules before reserving; do not assume they apply in the same way to every train in your itinerary.

For mobility assistance, contact the railway, bus company or airport with your intended departure and transfer details. Save the Japanese name of your destination as well as its English spelling, and keep the station and accommodation as separate map pins.

If you miss a connection, check the next departure and ask staff which changes are available for your ticket. For the return journey, check the final local connection as well as the last train or flight: a later main-line service may not connect with the transport you need to reach it.

Questions before departure

How do I get to Ishikawa from Osaka?

Take the Thunderbird limited express from Osaka to Tsuruga and transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for Kagaonsen or Kanazawa. The fastest Osaka–Kanazawa journey is approximately 2 hours 10 minutes; search both legs together for your travel date.

Can I reserve a seat on the Komatsu Airport bus?

The Hokutetsu airport limousine is not a reservation-based service. Go to the stop and board; where ticket machines are available, buy a ticket before boarding and put it in the fare box when getting off. The Kanazawa Station fare is ¥1,400 per adult and ¥700 per child.

Which airport-bus timetable should I use?

Use the Hokutetsu timetable whose validity dates include your journey. In the October 25–November 30, 2026 timetable, the airport-bound stop at Kanazawa Station is West Gate, terminal stop 3.

Should I buy the Hokuriku Arch Pass for a one-way trip?

Compare its ¥35,000 adult price with the individual tickets for all covered journeys you plan to make within seven consecutive days. For a single Osaka–Kanazawa journey, eligible visitors can also compare JR West’s HOKURIKU One-way Ticket, which is purchased through a participating overseas agency before arriving in Japan.

What should I save before leaving?

Save your ticket or booking confirmation, seat details, exact boarding point, onward connection and accommodation address. For a Noto airport transfer, include the Furusato Taxi reservation and meeting point.
