Hyogo is a large prefecture, and the best route depends on your destination. Kobe is accessible by airport bus, ferry and rail; Himeji is on the Shinkansen; and Kinosaki Onsen requires a longer journey inland.
Choose your arrival station first, then compare the complete trip—including transfers, waiting time and the journey to your accommodation. The times below are approximate vehicle journey times unless otherwise stated.
1. Choose your arrival point
- Shin-Osaka
- Shinkansen
- Kyoto
- Nozomi Shinkansen
- Nagoya
- Nozomi Shinkansen
- Tokyo
- Nozomi Shinkansen
Kobe: Shin-Kobe, Sannomiya or Kobe Airport
Choose Shin-Kobe when arriving by Shinkansen, and check whether Sannomiya is more convenient for your hotel or onward connection. They are different stations, so include the journey between them if necessary.
From Kansai International Airport, a limousine bus goes directly to Kobe Sannomiya. The Bay Shuttle is another option: it crosses to the pier at Kobe Airport, where you can continue to the airport terminal and take the Port Liner to Sannomiya.
Use Kobe’s official access guide to search for your specific destination, including Shin-Kobe, Kobe Airport or Arima Onsen.
Himeji: Shinkansen or conventional rail
The Himeji tourism bureau gives the following approximate journey times:
| Starting point | Route | Time to Himeji |
|---|---|---|
| Shin-Osaka | Shinkansen | 28 minutes |
| Kyoto | Nozomi Shinkansen | 44 minutes |
| Nagoya | Nozomi Shinkansen | 1 hour 20 minutes |
| Tokyo | Nozomi Shinkansen | 3 hours 10 minutes |
| Okayama | Shinkansen | 20–40 minutes |
| Hiroshima | Hikari Rail Star Shinkansen | 1 hour |
| Osaka | JR Special Rapid | 57 minutes |
| Sannomiya | JR Special Rapid | 37 minutes |
| Kyoto | JR Special Rapid | 1 hour 25 minutes |
| Umeda | Railway to Sanyo Himeji | 1 hour 27 minutes |
The Shinkansen is useful when speed or a connection from another Shinkansen matters. From Osaka, compare it with the Special Rapid, which leaves from Osaka Station rather than Shin-Osaka. Some Nozomi and Hikari Rail Star trains do not stop at Himeji, so check the stop list before booking. JR Himeji and Sanyo Himeji are separate stations.
Kinosaki Onsen: train, bus or flight connection
The Kinosaki Onsen Tourism Association lists these approximate rail journeys:
- Osaka to Kinosaki Onsen: 2 hours 40 minutes by Kounotori limited express.
- Kyoto to Kinosaki Onsen: 2 hours 20 minutes by Kinosaki limited express.
- Sannomiya to Kinosaki Onsen: 2 hours 30 minutes by Hamakaze limited express.
- Tottori to Kinosaki Onsen: about 2 hours by the JR San’in Main Line.
The association also lists buses taking approximately 3 hours 10 minutes from Osaka Umeda or Kobe Sannomiya, and 3 hours 40 minutes from Kyoto Station’s Karasuma exit. Compare the exact departure points as well as the journey times.
For a flight-based route, the association lists about 35 minutes from Itami Airport to Kounotori Tajima Airport, followed by about 40 minutes by bus to Kinosaki Onsen Station. Check the flight and bus schedules together before booking, and ask your accommodation about its location and any available transfer.
2. Compare journey time and cost
The examples below are adult one-way fares. Rail prices include the stated seat conditions; airport bus and ferry prices cover the named transport leg.
| Route | Approximate journey time | Adult one-way fare and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Shin-Osaka to Himeji, Shinkansen | 28 minutes | ¥3,220: ¥1,460 base fare plus ¥1,760 non-reserved-seat Shinkansen charge |
| Osaka to JR Himeji, Special Rapid | 57 minutes | ¥1,460 base fare; ordinary unreserved seating, with no limited-express charge |
| Osaka to Kinosaki Onsen, Kounotori limited express | 2 hours 40 minutes | ¥6,140: ¥3,410 base fare plus ¥2,730 ordinary-car reserved-seat limited-express charge in the regular season |
| Kansai Airport pier to Kobe Airport pier, Bay Shuttle | About 30 minutes on the boat | ¥1,880 standard one-way ferry fare |
| Kansai Airport Terminal 1 to Kobe Sannomiya, limousine bus | About 1 hour 5 minutes nonstop | ¥2,200 |
| Kansai Airport Terminal 1 to Himeji Station, limousine bus | About 2 hours 5 minutes–2 hours 20 minutes | ¥3,700 |
| Itami Airport to Himeji Station, limousine bus | About 1 hour 20 minutes | ¥2,200 |
The Shinkansen example uses a non-reserved seat on a train offering that seating. The Kounotori example uses a reserved seat; its limited-express charge changes with the travel season. Check the train, seat and fare for your date in JR-West’s ticket search. JR-West publishes the Shinkansen fare table, Kounotori fare table and an Osaka–Himeji ordinary-fare example.
The airport bus fares and times come from the operators’ pages for Kobe Sannomiya, Kansai Airport–Himeji and Itami Airport–Himeji. The Bay Shuttle fare page also lists a one-way product including the Port Liner for ¥1,880 per adult; request that product if it fits your journey.
3. Follow the airport, pier and station steps
Kansai Airport to Kobe by Bay Shuttle
- Buy a ticket at the Bay Shuttle counter. If continuing to Sannomiya, ask for the ticket that includes the one-way Port Liner ride.
- Take the connecting bus to Kansai Airport pier. At Terminal 1, use bus stop 12. From Terminal 2, use the Bay Shuttle bus stop. The operator’s timetable identifies some Terminal 2 departures as direct to the pier; other connections run via Terminal 1, so check the departure you intend to use.
- Board the ferry at Kansai Airport pier. The pier cannot be reached on foot or by taxi.
- Continue from Kobe pier. Take the connecting bus to the Kobe Airport terminal, then the Port Liner to Sannomiya if that is your destination.
The operator asks passengers to arrive at least 20 minutes before departure; boarding begins five minutes before departure. Add the airport-to-pier and pier-to-city transfers when comparing the ferry with the direct bus. See the Bay Shuttle boarding guide and timetable.
For early or late travel, check the local connection carefully. The operator notes that the 05:30 departure from Kobe Airport and the 00:31 arrival at Kobe Airport have no Port Liner connection. There is no taxi rank at the Bay Shuttle terminal.
Kansai Airport to Kobe Sannomiya by bus
The airport limousine bus is a direct choice for Sannomiya. The operator lists a one-way fare of ¥2,200 per adult and ¥1,100 per child. The Terminal 1–Sannomiya journey takes about 1 hour 5 minutes nonstop; services via Rokko Island take about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Find the Kobe Sannomiya service on the terminal’s departure display and buy a ticket before boarding. Check whether your chosen departure serves Terminal 2, and check the return timetable separately.
Airport bus to Himeji
From Kansai Airport, the Himeji limousine bus costs ¥3,700 per adult or ¥1,850 per child one way. The operator lists approximately 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes between Terminal 1 and Himeji Station.
Reservations are required. The operator’s Himeji timetable gives the Shinki Bus Reservation Center number as +81 78-231-4892, open 09:00–18:00. Check the stops for your selected departure.
From Itami Airport, the Himeji airport bus timetable lists ¥2,200 per adult and ¥1,100 per child one way. Himeji tourism gives an approximate journey time of 1 hour 20 minutes.
Kinosaki via Tajima Airport
Check the Itami–Tajima flight and the onward bus to Kinosaki Onsen Station as separate legs. Include airport check-in, the connection after landing and the journey from the station to your accommodation. If the schedules do not fit, compare the complete itinerary with a limited express or highway bus.
4. Book the whole journey
Trains
Use JR-West’s ticket search to enter your departure and arrival stations and compare trains. For a Kounotori, Kinosaki or Hamakaze limited express, check that your purchase covers both the base fare and the limited-express charge.
For a Shinkansen journey, check the train’s stops, departure station and seat type before paying. JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION offers online booking for eligible journeys. Save the confirmation and follow the instructions for the ticket or pickup method you select.
Bay Shuttle tickets
The operator’s fare page lists these products:
| Ticket | Adult | Child aged 6 to under 12 |
|---|---|---|
| One way | ¥1,880 | ¥940 |
| One way, including Port Liner | ¥1,880 | ¥940 |
| Return discount | ¥3,060 | ¥1,530 |
| Same-day return | ¥2,510 | ¥1,260 |
The return-discount ticket is valid for 120 days from purchase. The Port Liner-included ticket is sold at the Kansai Airport ticket counter and Sannomiya Port Liner Station; request that product rather than assuming every ferry ticket includes rail travel.
The operator’s notice about the overseas-visitor discount gives June 30, 2026 as the discontinuation date. Tickets purchased before discontinuation may be used until their individual expiry dates. The notice itself does not state its announcement date; March 16 is not given in the PDF as the date sales ended.
You can reserve the Bay Shuttle online from 90 days to one hour before departure. Choose the correct direction and keep the booking details handy.
5. Connections, luggage and alternatives
- Plan the return separately. Check the last train, bus or ferry that gets you all the way to your destination, not just the last departure on the main leg.
- Keep station names with your booking. Shin-Kobe, Sannomiya, JR Himeji and Sanyo Himeji lead to different platforms or connections. Save your accommodation address separately from the station pin.
- Measure large suitcases before a Shinkansen trip. JR-West says baggage with combined dimensions over 160 cm, up to 250 cm, requires a reserved seat with an oversized-baggage area. See the JR-West luggage guide for the applicable rules.
- Compare passes with individual tickets. Check the pass’s validity dates, eligible trains and reservation conditions against your itinerary before buying.
- Check accessibility and luggage arrangements. If you have reduced mobility or bulky luggage, ask the relevant operator about your chosen boarding point and transfer.
- If you miss a connection, check the next departure with the operator and ask the ticket seller which changes or refunds apply to your booking.
6. Questions before departure
How long does it take from Shin-Osaka to Himeji?
Himeji’s tourism bureau lists about 28 minutes by Shinkansen. Check that your selected train stops at Himeji; some Nozomi services do not. See the Himeji access guide.
How long is the train from Osaka or Kyoto to Kinosaki Onsen?
The tourism association lists about 2 hours 40 minutes from Osaka by Kounotori and 2 hours 20 minutes from Kyoto by Kinosaki limited express. Check your departure and fare in JR-West’s search.
How much is the Bay Shuttle?
The standard one-way fare is ¥1,880 per adult and ¥940 per child aged 6 to under 12. A one-way ticket including the Port Liner is listed at the same prices. Return products have different conditions.
How early should I arrive for the Bay Shuttle?
The operator asks passengers to arrive at least 20 minutes before departure. Boarding begins five minutes before departure. Allow additional time to reach the pier by the connecting bus.
Which information should I check before leaving?
Reopen the timetable and service notices for each booked train, bus, flight or ferry. For Kobe, the Bay Shuttle service page and official Kobe access guide are useful starting points. Keep your booking confirmation, exact boarding point and final address available throughout the journey.
