Himeji Castle’s standard adult admission is ¥2,500. Eligible Himeji City residents pay ¥1,000, while visitors under 18 enter free, including through the first 31 March after their 18th birthday. If you also plan to visit Koko-en Garden, compare the ¥2,600 combined ticket with separate admission.

The castle normally opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Allow about one hour for the keep complex, or 90 minutes to two hours for the keep and West Bailey, plus travel and queueing time. The route includes steep stairs, and the historic buildings have no lifts.

Tickets and prices

The castle’s revised rates took effect on 1 March 2026. The resident rate depends on having a registered address in Himeji City, not on nationality or a hotel stay. The city’s admission guide lists the castle rates, and Koko-en’s admission page lists the garden price.

At a glance
Castle: general adult
¥2,500
Castle: eligible Himeji City resident adult
¥1,000
Castle and Koko-en combined
¥2,600
Koko-en: general adult
¥400
Ticket Price Best for
Castle: general adult ¥2,500 An adult visitor who is not a Himeji City resident
Castle: eligible Himeji City resident adult ¥1,000 An adult resident
Castle and Koko-en combined ¥2,600 A non-resident adult planning to see both attractions
Koko-en: general adult ¥400 A garden visit without the castle
Castle annual ticket ¥5,000 Repeated castle visits by the same person

Choosing between tickets: for a non-resident adult, separate castle and garden tickets total ¥2,900. The ¥2,600 combined ticket saves ¥300 and covers both attractions on the same day.

For Himeji residents aged 18 to 64, the official ticket seller advises buying the ¥1,000 castle ticket and ¥400 garden ticket separately. Other exemptions may apply, including for eligible older residents and visitors with disability certificates. See the combined-ticket conditions before choosing.

The annual castle ticket permits the same holder to visit repeatedly for one year from the payment date. For groups of 30 or more, the castle lists adult rates of ¥2,000 per non-resident and ¥800 per resident.

Admission is free for visitors under 18, including through the first 31 March after they turn 18. Bring an appropriate document to demonstrate eligibility: the city lists student identification among its examples for age verification and photo identification showing a Himeji address for resident verification.

Buying tickets and making reservations

Himeji Castle does not operate a reservation system for entering the keep. You can buy a date-and-time-designated digital admission ticket from 90 days before your visit through the day of the visit using the official online ticket information.

A digital ticket can make admission smoother, but it does not give priority inside the castle when it is crowded. Group discounts for parties of 30 or more are not available through digital tickets; buy those tickets at the counter. Castle admission tickets are valid on the day of the visit.

Opening hours and entry deadlines

Place or checkpoint Normal schedule
Castle admission gate 09:00–16:00
Castle closing time 17:00
Main keep entrance Reach it by 16:10
Koko-en Garden 09:00–17:00; last entry at 16:30
Scheduled closure for both 29 and 30 December

The castle’s 16:00 deadline is for the admission gate, not the keep entrance. The castle FAQ asks visitors to reach the main keep entrance by 16:10 and estimates a 15-minute walk there from the admission gate. Passing through the gate just before 16:00 may therefore leave too little time. The main keep and buildings such as the West Bailey’s Hyakken Corridor begin closing from 16:30.

If the keep is your priority, arrive well before the gate deadline. The castle says waits of around an hour can occur during busy periods. Koko-en has its own last-entry time, and its hours may differ during events.

Repair work and evening illumination

Himeji City has scheduled preservation work around the main keep from early July 2026 to around late July 2027. Scaffolding around affected structures may change the sightseeing experience, views of the keep and nighttime illumination. See the city’s repair notice when choosing a visit date or planning photographs.

The official English castle page describes exterior lighting from sunset until midnight, with seasonal effects at 20:00 and 21:00. The lighting is for viewing the exterior; it does not extend daytime admission to the paid area or buildings.

Getting to the castle

Himeji Castle is at 68 Honmachi, Himeji City. From the station, choose between a direct walk and a bus that reduces the station-side walk:

From Osaka, the official castle guide estimates about one hour to Himeji on the JR Special Rapid. From Shin-Osaka, it estimates about 30 minutes by Shinkansen. These train estimates end at Himeji Station, so add the onward journey to the castle and check the timetable and fare for your departure.

The station-to-castle journey is separate from the approximately 15-minute walk from the admission gate to the keep entrance. Keep both in mind when working backwards from the keep-entry deadline.

Stairs, shoes and accessibility

The castle grounds have slopes, steps and uneven changes in level. Inside the keep and turrets, the stairs are steep and narrow, and there are no lifts. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to climb.

Outdoor shoes must be removed inside the buildings. Bring a bag to carry them; the castle also provides a shoulder-style bag after the ticket gate for visitors who do not have their own. The official guide recommends thick socks or comfortable indoor shoes for the wooden floors.

There is no air conditioning in the keep. In warm weather, bring a drink in a container with a lid and drink regularly. The city’s heat-safety guidance identifies water dispensers before Hishi-no-mon and at Bizenmaru, both within the paid area.

Wheelchair users cannot tour inside the main keep or buildings such as the West Bailey’s Hyakken Corridor. The castle describes a route from the admission gate toward Bizenmaru with fewer steps, but says steep slopes make two to three experienced helpers necessary. The castle has no specialist assistance staff and does not lend wheelchairs. An accessible toilet is outside the paid area, on the west side of Sannomaru Square.

For route suitability and current conditions, contact the Himeji Castle Management Office at 079-285-1146. Koko-en separately provides wheelchairs for use in the garden and notes that some paths have slopes; see its accessibility information.

Planning your visit

Choose your route before deciding how much time to set aside:

These are sightseeing estimates. Add your station transfer and time for admission and queues. The West Bailey is included in castle admission but follows a different path after the entrance, so make time for it rather than assuming you will pass through it on the way to the keep.

For an English-language guided visit, the Himeji tourism bureau offers private tours booked in advance. Its castle visit guide says reservations must be made at least three days before the tour.

Common questions

Is Himeji Castle ¥1,000 for all adults?

No. The general adult price is ¥2,500. The ¥1,000 adult rate applies to eligible Himeji City residents. The city fee announcement and English tourism notice explain the revised rates.

Can visitors under 18 enter free?

Yes. Free admission also covers the period from a visitor’s 18th birthday through the first following 31 March. Bring an appropriate document if you need to demonstrate eligibility.

Can I enter the main keep at 16:00?

The castle’s normal last admission is 16:00, but you must then reach the separate keep entrance by 16:10. Since the walk from the admission gate takes about 15 minutes, plan to pass through the gate earlier.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are not allowed in the castle’s paid area, and the castle does not provide temporary pet care. Guide dogs and hearing dogs may enter. Pets may be walked outside the paid area, including in Sannomaru Square.

Is the castle open at night because it is illuminated?

The regular lighting is an exterior display. Normal paid admission ends during the afternoon, and the castle closes at 17:00.
