Gunkanjima Tour: Landing Rules, Fees and Booking

To land on Gunkanjima, join a landing tour run by a boat company. A boat departure does not guarantee a landing: conditions at the island can prevent the captain from docking. Budget for the boat fare and a separate island facility fee, and check the refund rules for your particular operator before booking.

The municipal facility fee is ¥650 for the general category and ¥320 for elementary, junior-high and high-school students. The general fee changed in April 2026; an old guide showing ¥310 is not the current adult fee. The operator arrangements below are specifically those of Takashima Kaijo Kotsu, not shared rules for every company. Nagasaki tourism and city fee notice, checked 4 November 2026.

Reserve tour→Check in→Boat departs→Captain assesses conditions→Landing decision
A reserved seat and a permitted landing are different things.

1Gunkanjima tour: what is the island?

Gunkanjima's formal island name is Hashima, or 端島. It is in Takashima-machi, Nagasaki City. The island was expanded through reclamation for an undersea coal mine. When the mine closed in 1974, the island became uninhabited. General tourist landings began in 2009, and in July 2015 it became a component of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution World Heritage property. Nagasaki official tourism information, checked 4 November 2026.

The important practical distinction is between seeing the island from a boat and being allowed ashore. A landing tour combines a boat journey with an opportunity to visit the permitted facilities when conditions allow. It does not provide unrestricted access to every building visible in a photograph. Follow the crew's directions on the day and do not plan the visit as independent exploration.

Use this Hashima map search to orient yourself. Do not travel to an island map pin as though it were the check-in address. Your operator's office and boarding instructions are the useful places to save before leaving your accommodation.

For the wider trip, our Nagasaki travel guide introduces the city. The Japan cash and card guide and Japan bus guide can help with the land portion of the day. Keep the actual boat reservation and return arrangements together with those plans.

2Gunkanjima tour: choose an operator and compare the price

Nagasaki's official tourism page lists operators including Yamasa Kaiun, Gunkanjima Concierge, Takashima Kaijo Kotsu and Seaman Shokai. Check each company's own current information when comparing departures. The city facility fee does not tell you the boat fare, language service, child eligibility or wheelchair arrangements of the company you choose. Nagasaki official tourism information, checked 4 November 2026.

Cost or condition What this guide establishes Where to finish checking
Island facility fee General ¥650; school-student category ¥320 City notice and your booking's age/school category.
Boat fare Separate from the facility fee Your operator's current booking quote.
Departure and return Operator-specific The named departure you reserve.
Payment Takashima direct reservations: cash on the day Booking confirmation; other channels can differ.
Cancellation Takashima direct terms differ before/on the day Operator or travel agency used for the reservation.
Failure to land Takashima separates boat fare and facility-fee treatment The operator's FAQ and instructions.

Fees and conditions above were checked 4 November 2026. The municipal page's general age wording and the separate high-school-student category can overlap, so give the booking office the traveller's age and school status if the category is unclear. Do not resolve that ambiguity by choosing whichever category appears cheaper.

Compare the total for the same group, date and service. A lower boat price alone does not establish the better fit if a traveller cannot join under that operator's conditions or if the timing does not fit your return journey. Keep the source of every quote with its conditions rather than combining a boat price from one company with the cancellation terms of another.

Keep the fee categories visible when comparing totals.

3Gunkanjima tour: Takashima's timetable and check-in

Takashima Kaijo Kotsu lists a morning departure at 09:10 and an afternoon departure at 14:00. Its morning reception is 08:10–08:50, and its afternoon reception is 13:00–13:40. Those are reception windows, not permission to arrive at the pier at the departure time. Check in at the office first. Official course and access information, checked 4 November 2026.

Stage Morning plan Afternoon plan
Office reception 08:10–08:50 13:00–13:40
Boat departure 09:10 14:00
Planned return 12:10 17:10

The course includes a stop at Takashima to visit the coal museum and related sights, with about 30 minutes there. It lists approximately 20 minutes viewing Gunkanjima from the boat and approximately 45 minutes for the island landing visit. These describe the operator's planned course; actual landing remains subject to conditions. Do not add these activity times together and treat the result as the complete journey duration.

The office is at 11-22 Motofuna-machi, Nagasaki: office map search. The operator describes it as about two minutes on foot from Ohato tram stop and about ten minutes on foot from JR Nagasaki Station. It says not to go straight to the pier before checking in at the office, and it has no affiliated or discounted parking. Official access information, checked 4 November 2026.

Save the office address separately from the island name. At reception, have the reservation details and the operator's required documents available. Every passenger, adult or child, needs an individual pledge form under this company's rules. If your booking is through an agency, use its confirmation to establish what has already been arranged and what must be completed on the day.

4Gunkanjima tour: landing, cancellation and refunds

Morning reception · 08:10–08:50→Departure · 09:10→Afternoon reception · 13:00–13:40→Departure · 14:00
The office reception closes before the boat departs.

The captain assesses landing conditions using factors such as waves, wind and visibility at docking. At departure, it may still be unclear whether the island landing will happen. A favourable city forecast therefore cannot guarantee a landing, and a boat that sails has not automatically confirmed access to the island. Takashima FAQ, checked 4 November 2026.

For Takashima's tour, the boat fare is not refunded merely because landing is impossible. The island facility fee is refunded in exchange for the ticket under the FAQ's procedure. Keep that ticket and follow the crew's instructions. Do not confuse these two payments when assessing the risk of disappointment.

For direct reservations with Takashima, cancellation is free through the previous day, while cancellation on the day incurs 100% of the boat fare. A booking made through a travel company follows that seller's cancellation conditions. Check the channel you actually used before applying the direct-booking rule. Official participation conditions, checked 4 November 2026.

Failure to land, a cancelled sailing and a passenger cancelling are different events. Ask the reservation provider about any situation not covered by your confirmation. Do not treat the no-landing rule as a complete policy for every type of interruption. This matters particularly when arranging other paid activities around the planned return.

Passenger cancellation→Sailing cancellation→Boat sails but no landing→Keep facility-fee ticket
Ask about the event that actually affects your booking.

5Gunkanjima tour: clothing, children and access

There are no toilets on Hashima. Use the facilities available before the island visit and follow the crew's instructions about the day's stops. Pack for being outside while keeping your hands and movement practical. Takashima prohibits umbrellas, including parasols, on the boat and on the island, and advises raincoats or similar clothing for rain. Official course and participation information, checked 4 November 2026.

The operator may refuse landing to passengers wearing high heels or beach sandals. Select suitable footwear before leaving the hotel rather than hoping to resolve it at boarding. People who have been drinking cannot participate, and passengers are asked not to drink alcohol or smoke during the tour.

Takashima does not accept children under four. Children aged 12 and under must wear life jackets. Other companies' eligibility can differ, so confirm the exact operator if you are comparing family options. A city's general tourism page does not override the rules of the company carrying your group.

Wheelchair participation requires advance discussion of the conditions and one accompanying helper. Takashima does not accept electric wheelchairs and describes a light manual type. Do not read that description as a guarantee of access for any particular traveller: explain the equipment and assistance needed to the operator before booking. Pets cannot board this company's tour. Official FAQ, checked 4 November 2026.

Takashima also says it does not provide English or other foreign-language announcements on the boat. Establish whether that service meets your group's needs before choosing it. The presence of an English website, a translated travel article or an English-language creator video does not establish a live English guide on your departure.

No umbrellas→Suitable shoes→No toilet on Hashima→Under 4 not accepted→Wheelchair enquiry in advance
Check the named operator's rules before reserving.

6Gunkanjima tour: traveller videos and final questions

Pastel Japanvlog introduces a Nagasaki Gunkanjima landing cruise with a Japanese-titled travel account.

Use traveller videos to add perspective on the island and boat journey. A video of a successful landing does not predict access on your date, and an older trip is not a current fare or timetable source.

Can I go without joining a tour?

The official tourism page says landing requires participation in a boat company's landing tour. Reserve with an operator and use its office and boarding directions.

Is the facility fee the whole price?

No. The boat fare is separate. Use the current company quote and the municipal facility-fee category for each traveller to work out your total.

What is the most important detail before departure?

Check the reception address and window, not just the sailing time. Then keep the booking's cancellation terms, landing limitations and required forms accessible. Confirm any individual age, language or mobility requirements before paying.

Does a video prove that my tour will land?

No. A creator's successful visit shows a particular journey. Your captain must assess the conditions affecting your own sailing and docking. Keep the video as travel inspiration while using the operator's instructions for the decision on the day.
