Tokyo’s sushi counters offer several ways to enjoy an omakase meal, in which the chef chooses the selection. For a published lunch price, consider Sushi Keita in Tsukiji, Sanosushi near Shibakoen, or Tomidokoro near Onarimon. For a Ginza dinner, compare Sushi Kanesaka’s counter with Harutaka. In Roppongi, Sukiyabashi Jiro’s branch serves both lunch and dinner.

The ten restaurants below appeared in Tabelog’s Sushi Tokyo 100 Famous Restaurants 2025 list. The numbers preserve the guide’s editorial order, which prioritized Michelin listings, award records and visitor information; they are not a ranking of taste.

Planning a visit to Sushidokoro Yamato? The restaurant moved from Tsukiji to Hatchobori on July 9, 2026. Use its new address when planning your route.

How to choose a sushi restaurant

Start with the neighborhood you’ll already be visiting, then compare lunch and dinner courses:

Check the price before you book.

Compare the full cost, not just the course price. Tax, service, booking fees, drinks and extra pieces can be treated differently from one restaurant to another.

Two choices in Ginza

1. Sushi Kanesaka

Sushi Kanesaka’s Ginza main restaurant has an eight-seat basement counter. Its official website describes the menu as omakase at market price, so ask about the expected cost when booking.

The official site also lists other Kanesaka locations with their own menus. Select the Ginza main restaurant rather than using another branch’s prices for your budget. The Michelin Guide page provides another source of restaurant information.

2. Harutaka

Harutaka is a Ginza dinner option for diners who want a meal built around sushi and seasonal seafood. Its Michelin Guide page says the restaurant manages its own reservations and asks guests to contact it directly.

Tsukiji, Hatchobori and Shintomicho

3. Sushidokoro Yamato

Formerly in Tsukiji, Sushidokoro Yamato now operates in Hatchobori. Its OMAKASE reservation page lists a nigiri-only course and a longer omakase.

Meals start together at the booked time. The named guest must attend and may be asked for identification; the page also says staff do not speak English.

9. Sushi Keita

Sushi Keita is a useful choice for comparing a nigiri-only lunch with a longer omakase. Its OMAKASE page publishes both.

Each seating starts together. Discuss allergies before booking: the restaurant’s page explains that extensive restrictions affecting multiple dishes can make the course unsuitable.

10. Sushi Hashimoto

Sushi Hashimoto is a reservation-only counter in Shintomicho. Its official website directs guests to OMAKASE for reservations, prices and hours.

The person named on the reservation must attend and bring an original photo ID matching the booking name.

Roppongi, Shirokane and Shibakoen

4. Sushi Matsuura

Sushi Matsuura is a counter in a residential part of Shirokane. It is worth considering if a published dinner-course price and an English-language booking route are priorities.

The restaurant requests smart-casual dress and asks guests to arrive five minutes before their reservation.

5. Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongiten

This is the Roppongi Hills branch, not the Ginza main restaurant. It is a convenient choice for a meal alongside a visit to Roppongi Hills.

The Michelin Guide page provides additional information. Use the Roppongi contact details rather than those for the Ginza branch.

6. Sanosushi

Sanosushi offers a counter meal near Shibakoen. Its Tabelog Restaurant Selection page is labeled as the restaurant’s official listing and publishes courses, hours and access details.

Onarimon and Minamiaoyama

7. Tomidokoro

Tomidokoro is a sushi counter in Shimbashi, a short walk from Onarimon Station. Its Michelin Guide page links to an English-language TableCheck reservation page.

8. Sushi Ryujiro

Sushi Ryujiro is in Minamiaoyama, near Aoyama-itchome Station. Its OMAKASE page lists lunch nigiri and omakase courses.

How to order and book

An omakase course leaves the selection to the chef. Some courses focus on nigiri; others include small dishes before the sushi. A lunch nigiri course can therefore differ considerably from a dinner omakase at the same restaurant.

  1. Choose lunch or dinner first. Keita’s ¥14,000 course is a lunch listing; Matsuura’s ¥20,000 example is a dinner listing.
  2. Use the restaurant-specific booking route. Hashimoto publishes a monthly booking schedule, while Harutaka asks guests to contact it directly.
  3. Compare the full cost. Look for tax, service charges, booking fees and the cost of drinks or extra pieces.
  4. Discuss allergies before booking. Some counters limit substitutions, and Keita and Yamato describe restrictions on extensive dietary requirements.
  5. Save the address and seating time. Several counters start guests together. Yamato may request identification, while Hashimoto asks the named guest to bring original photo ID.
